Start with Silent Hill 2 (2024), the remake by Bloober Team. It is a self-contained psychological-horror story, available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, so you do not need to find a decades-old disc or play Silent Hill (1999) first. The remake keeps the 2001 game’s premise—James Sunderland follows a letter from his dead wife to the fogbound town—but updates the camera, combat, puzzles and presentation for current hardware.
If you specifically want 1960s Japan, floral body horror or Ryukishi07’s writing, start with Silent Hill f. If first-person horror on a remote Scottish island sounds better, Silent Hill: Townfall is also a valid entry point. Neither requires previous games. The only sequence rule that genuinely matters is for the classic Harry-and-Heather storyline: play Silent Hill (1999) before Silent Hill 3.
Which Silent Hill game should you play first?
For most newcomers in late 2026, play Silent Hill 2 (2024) first. It is the most accessible release, explains the series’ central ideas without requiring lore homework, and is sold for modern consoles and PC. IGN’s Blythe Dujardin called it “a faithful recreation with some quality of life improvements” for people seeking the series on modern consoles, while reviewer Tristan Ogilvie described it as “a great way to visit – or revisit” one of survival horror’s most frightening settings (IGN, 2024–2026).

Shared imagery and documents reward returning fans, but none of that is needed to understand the plot. Choose a different first game only when its setting or format is the reason you are interested. Silent Hill f is set in 1960s Japan and leans into melee combat and botanical body horror. Townfall is a first-person game set in 1996 on the fictional Scottish island of St. Amelia. Both are standalone, but they are deliberate reinventions rather than introductions to the classic American fog-town formula.
Do you need to play Silent Hill 1 before Silent Hill 2?
No. Silent Hill 2 has a separate cast, conflict and emotional arc. Push Square’s Liam Croft gives the short answer plainly: “no, you don’t need to play Silent Hill 1 first.” The two games share the town, themes and occasional background references, not a continuing campaign.
Playing the 1999 original first can provide historical context for how the series’ fog, radio static and otherworldly spaces evolved, but it also means finding old hardware or accepting an imperfect re-release. It is optional enrichment, not a prerequisite. The 2024 remake likewise retells the 2001 story; it does not continue it.
What is the one Silent Hill sequence that must be played in order?
The firm story chain is Origins → Silent Hill (1999) → Silent Hill 3. Origins is a prequel about trucker Travis Grady, Silent Hill follows Harry Mason searching for his adopted daughter Cheryl, and Silent Hill 3 follows Heather, Harry’s daughter, 17 years later. Silent Hill 3 contains major payoff spoilers for the first game, so reverse the order only if spoilers do not matter to you.
Origins’s “Good” ending is intended to lead into the original, although its exact canon status is debated. For that reason, lore-focused players often play Silent Hill before Origins: the prequel’s revelations land better once you know the destination. In practical 2026 terms, this route is hardware-hostile because the games are generally found on used PS1, PS2 or PSP discs, older PC releases, or aging digital storefronts.
Silent Hill 4: The Room is the last Team Silent game and is loosely connected through references such as Walter Sullivan and Joseph Schreiber. Its main story is set in Ashfield, mostly inside Henry Townshend’s apartment, so it can follow Silent Hill 3 without being a required chapter.

Why is the Silent Hill 2 remake the default recommendation?
It combines the series’ most widely praised standalone premise with a product you can buy and install today. The remake uses an over-the-shoulder camera instead of the original’s fixed viewpoints, adds manual aiming and dodges, expands areas and puzzles, and introduces additional enemy encounters. The result is recognisably the same story but not the same pacing or combat model.

Critical and player reception supports that position without implying a universal verdict. Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno cited an 86/100 Metacritic score and 88/100 OpenCritic score in 2025, and IGN awarded the remake 8/10 in 2024. IGN reported more than 1 million copies sold in less than a week and later reported 2 million copies sold in 2025. Steam’s page, accessed 29 October 2026, showed 94% positive English-language reviews from 24,082 reviews, with 94% positive over the previous 30 days. Steam also lists it as the 2024 Outstanding Visual Style Award winner.
Those figures describe reception and sales, not a promise that every player will prefer the remake. The original campaign takes around eight hours; IGN’s remake playthrough ran just over 15 hours. The remake has eight endings compared with six in the original, but its longer routes and expanded puzzles can feel less concentrated. IGN specifically found some early puzzles over-expanded and was not eager to replay immediately for every ending because of the extra length.
Buy the remake as a separate product from the original. A PS2 disc, an old PC copy, the 2012 HD Collection and the 2024 remake are not interchangeable editions. The remake’s Steam version released on 7 October 2024; PS5 and PC console dating was 8 October 2024, and the Xbox Series version arrived on 21 November 2025. Steam lists a 16 GB RAM requirement, Windows 10 64-bit, a GTX 1070 Ti/RX 5700/Arc A750-class GPU and 50 GB of storage as minimum PC requirements (Steam).
Should you play the original or the remake of Silent Hill 2?
Play the remake first if you are new; save the original for comparison if the series clicks. The 2001 version has fixed-camera composition, slower movement and a compact eight-hour structure that many fans consider essential to its mood. The remake is easier to purchase, has modern aiming and navigation, and presents the same central tragedy with substantially more exploration.

A minority purist view, represented by The Punished Backlog in 2025, considers the fan-made Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition on PC the best way to experience the 2001 version. That project requires owning the original PC release and is a later enthusiast option, not a sensible first purchase for someone who has never played the series.
If you do compare them, avoid treating one ending as the mandatory “canon” that explains every later game. The original and remake offer multiple endings, and subsequent titles do not require you to have selected one particular outcome.
Can you start with Silent Hill f?
Yes, if its setting is what attracted you. Silent Hill f takes place in 1960s Ebisugaoka, Japan, and follows Hinako. It is written by Ryukishi07, known for Higurashi and Umineko, and is set decades before the American games on an in-universe chronology. That date makes it the earliest setting, not the required first chapter.

The game’s melee-forward combat and floral body horror make it a different first impression from the remake’s vulnerable-everyman approach. The official mature-content warning includes gender discrimination, child abuse, bullying, drug-induced hallucinations, torture and graphic violence. It also notes that depictions draw on 1960s Japanese customs and culture and do not represent the developers’ values. Read that warning before choosing it as a gift or family-room game.

Can you start with Silent Hill: Townfall?
Yes, with one qualification: it is the newest interpretation, not the typical one. Townfall is set in 1996 on St. Amelia, a fictional Scottish island, and follows Simon Ordell. It is the first full-length entry presented in first person. A handheld CRT television takes the functional place of the series’ classic radio, and the story focuses on guilt and the idea of Silent Hill as a psychological phenomenon rather than simply a physical town.
Screen Burn Interactive (formerly No Code), Konami and Annapurna Interactive released it for PS5 and PC on 24 September 2026; the Steam listing gives 23 September. No Xbox version had been announced in October 2026. Switchblade Gaming’s compilation lists an 80 Metacritic score for the PS5 and PC versions, generally favourable, and Steam’s US list price was $49.99 on 13 October 2026.
Townfall needs no earlier game. Start there if first-person presentation and an isolated Scottish setting are more appealing than James Sunderland’s story. If you want to know what most people mean by the established Silent Hill template—American town, third-person exploration, radio static and Team Silent references—play the remake first.

The current catalogue is smaller than the franchise’s history suggests. IGN counts approximately 18 releases since 1999 when mobile and peripheral titles are included; Switchblade Gaming counts 13 standalone games after excluding mobile, arcade, Japan-only releases, the delisted teaser and the HD Collection. There is no Konami-published master timeline, and a chronology table is not the same thing as a recommended play order.

Prices, subscriptions and physical stock change, so treat those as a dated reference rather than a permanent price promise. PS5 owners also have the free The Short Message, released on 31 January 2024. It lasts roughly one to two hours, is set in Kettenstadt, Germany, and has a 52 Metacritic score in Switchblade’s launch-platform compilation. It is useful as a curiosity, but its short, chase-oriented structure is not a reliable sample of the whole franchise.
What is the best order after you finish the remake?
Use one of these routes rather than forcing every release into a single chronology.

Path A: the practical modern route
- Silent Hill 2 remake.
- Silent Hill f and Townfall in either order.
- The Short Message if you want a free, brief experiment on PS5.
- Silent Hill 4: The Room as an inexpensive Team Silent-era side trip on PC.
This route gives you three current major releases before asking you to hunt for legacy hardware.
Path B: classic Team Silent feel
- Silent Hill 2 remake.
- Silent Hill (1999).
- Silent Hill 3.
- Silent Hill 4: The Room.
After that, try Origins, Shattered Memories, Homecoming or Downpour according to the idea that interests you. Loaded’s guides deliberately avoid replaying the original Silent Hill 2 immediately after the remake; the two versions are better appreciated with some distance.
Path C: you arrived for f or Townfall
Play the game that drew you in, then move to the remake. The standalone design means you lose no necessary plot information. The benefit of this route is thematic contrast: you see the series’ Japanese reinvention or first-person Scottish interpretation before returning to its most recognisable modern form.
Path D: lore completionist
- Silent Hill (1999).
- Origins, if you want the prequel context.
- Silent Hill 3.
- Silent Hill 4: The Room.
Some players reverse the first two steps because Origins works better after the original. Either way, this is a preservation-minded route, not the easiest onboarding plan in 2026.
Should you use the 2012 HD Collection?
Use it only as a last resort. The collection contains Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, but it is widely criticised for incomplete source material, frame-rate problems, altered fog and audio issues. The planned Xbox 360 patch was cancelled. Loaded identifies Xbox backward compatibility as one of the least-bad official ways to reach Silent Hill 3, while still warning that the remaster is unloved.

Do not buy the HD Collection believing it is the definitive edition or a substitute for the 2024 remake. If you already own it, it can reveal the classic stories; if you are choosing a first game today, use the remake or obtain original hardware and discs through legitimate second-hand channels.
What about Origins, Shattered Memories, Homecoming and Downpour?
These are optional branches, not steps every newcomer must clear. Origins is a useful prequel after Silent Hill, but its PSP/PS2-only availability makes it a poor first recommendation. Shattered Memories is an alternate-universe reimagining of the first game with therapy sessions, no traditional combat and chase sequences; it is the mid-era title most worth seeking if that concept appeals to you.
Homecoming is a standalone, combat-heavy entry with a divisive reputation. Downpour is also standalone, uses a more open town and was the last pre-hiatus mainline game in 2012; it was removed from the Microsoft Store. Book of Memories is a Vita dungeon crawler and is best treated as a historical curiosity.

Is the announced Silent Hill remake a reason to wait?
No. Konami announced a Bloober Team remake of Silent Hill on 13 June 2025, but no official release date had been provided by September 2026. An unofficial report suggesting a 2027 window is not a confirmed schedule. Because Silent Hill 2 is independent, you can play its remake now and play the first game’s remake later in either order.
Do not confuse the cancelled P.T. teaser with a playable chapter in the series. It was a teaser for the cancelled Silent Hills project, was removed from the PlayStation Store and cannot be re-downloaded. Films, including the separately developed Return to Silent Hill adaptation, also have their own continuity and do not change game order.
Bottom line: which game should you choose tonight?
Choose Silent Hill 2 (2024) unless a specific setting decides the question for you. It is standalone, current, widely available and close enough to the series’ defining style to teach you what “Silent Hill” usually means. Then play Silent Hill f or Townfall for their distinct settings, and move to Silent Hill (1999) followed by Silent Hill 3 if you want the original Team Silent story.
