For most newcomers, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Capcom USA’s October 18, 2024 beginner guide quotes a staff recommendation to start there because it is a strong jumping-on point. Choose a different series if your preferred experience is more specific: Monster Hunter for cooperative preparation and repeated hunts, Street Fighter 6 for competitive matches and long-term mechanical practice, or another Capcom family if survival horror, hunting action, and fighting games do not appeal.
The important choice is not which franchise is most famous. These games ask for different kinds of attention: Resident Evil is a directed, tense adventure; Monster Hunter is a repeatable prepare-and-hunt loop; Street Fighter is built around short matches and deliberate improvement. Use the guide below to match that structure to your time, friends, tolerance for pressure, and preferred platform.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 (2019) | Most first-time Capcom players | Survival-horror campaign with exploration, inventory decisions, and resource management | Oct 2026 |
| Monster Hunter | Cooperative players who enjoy preparation and progression | Hunting-action loop: prepare, fight giant monsters, craft equipment, repeat | Oct 2026 |
| Street Fighter 6 | Competitive players who want repeatable matches | Fighting-game structure centered on controls, timing, spacing, defense, and matchups | Oct 2026 |
| Other Capcom families | Readers whose tastes point away from horror, hunting, or fighting | Capcom catalog categories include Mega Man, Devil May Cry, Ace Attorney, Dead Rising, Dragon’s Dogma, and Okami | Oct 2026 |
How do I choose my first Capcom game?
Start by deciding what you want to do minute by minute. If you want to search rooms, solve problems, aim carefully, and feel tension over limited supplies, choose Resident Evil. If you want to study a large enemy, prepare a loadout, fight it repeatedly, and turn rewards into better equipment, choose Monster Hunter. If you want a round to last a few minutes and then immediately practice or play another match, choose Street Fighter.
Your preferred social format is just as important. Resident Evil is primarily a solo introduction. Monster Hunter’s identity includes cooperating with friends to hunt monsters. Street Fighter is fundamentally competitive: you can learn alone, but the central loop is fighting another player or an opponent under match rules. None of these formats is objectively easier; they are different kinds of learning.

- Look at another Capcom family when horror, hunting, and fighting are all poor fits for your taste.
Why is Resident Evil 2 (2019) the default recommendation?
Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the broadest first recommendation because it presents the series’ defining ideas in a modern entry point. Capcom describes Resident Evil as survival-horror games in which players use weapons and other items to survive frightening situations. The 2019 game also gives a newcomer a directed adventure rather than requiring knowledge of every earlier release.
Capcom USA’s October 18, 2024 guide quotes its staff directly: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” That is a specific beginner recommendation, not a claim that every player will prefer it. Your tolerance for fear, preference for first- or third-person presentation, and interest in remakes versus newer stories can change the answer.
What you learn while playing
Resident Evil teaches several skills at once: exploring a connected environment, deciding which items deserve scarce inventory space, aiming under pressure, and judging when to fight or avoid danger. The campaign is directed enough to provide momentum, but it still asks you to remember rooms, examine clues, and manage resources. That combination makes it a useful introduction to both the franchise and survival-horror conventions.
Who should not start here?
Choose something else if you dislike being startled, feel uncomfortable with sustained tension, or want an activity designed around friends from the first session. Resident Evil can be played for its action and story, but its identity remains fear, uncertainty, exploration, and resource decisions. A player seeking relaxed cooperative progression will usually be better served by Monster Hunter.
Which Resident Evil game is best for beginners who want more fear?
If your priority is the scariest available starting point rather than the broadest introduction, consider Resident Evil 7 biohazard. Capcom USA’s guide quotes a staff member saying, “Resident Evil 7 biohazard is the scariest one! Play that one to lose sleep.” Treat that as a preference-based recommendation: it is aimed at readers who specifically want intense fear, not at every newcomer.
Resident Evil 2 (2019) remains the safer default because it balances horror with exploration and a recognizable series structure. Resident Evil 7 biohazard is the better match when atmosphere and fright outrank comfort. You do not need to decide that one entry is universally definitive; the series has changed its presentation and emphasis across releases.

Is Monster Hunter a good first Capcom game?
Monster Hunter is an excellent first Capcom game when you enjoy learning a large opponent, preparing deliberately, and repeating a hunt until your understanding and equipment improve. It is not a substitute for Resident Evil’s paced horror campaign. Its basic rhythm is prepare, hunt, collect rewards, craft or upgrade equipment, and select a tougher target.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCapcom defines Monster Hunter as a hunting-action series in which players fight giant monsters in natural environments. Capcom also describes the cooperative format in which players hunt monsters with friends. That cooperative identity is central to the recommendation, although the exact title and edition you should choose depends on your platform, the games your friends own, and how much learning you want before the loop feels comfortable.
What makes the learning curve different?
Monster Hunter asks you to learn a weapon’s moves, understand timing, read monster patterns, select suitable equipment, and prepare for a particular target. The game may feel slower at first because improvement comes from knowledge as much as reflexes. A failed hunt can still be useful if it reveals an attack pattern, a positioning mistake, or a preparation gap.
Is Monster Hunter good for playing with friends?
Yes, especially when your group enjoys planning and improving together. One player can discover a monster’s behavior while another learns a weapon or gathers materials, and the repeated-hunt structure gives a party a reason to return. Confirm that everyone is choosing the same title and compatible platform edition before buying; availability is title-specific rather than guaranteed across the whole franchise.
Who may find it frustrating?
Monster Hunter may be a poor fit if you want a short, tightly scripted campaign with immediate story progression. Preparation, equipment menus, and repeated encounters are not side activities; they are the main appeal. Players who prefer a single uninterrupted adventure may find Resident Evil’s structure easier to understand.

Street Fighter is easy to begin in the limited sense that you can learn basic controls and play a match quickly. It is not easy to master. Improvement involves timing, spacing, defense, recognizing what an opponent is trying to do, and learning matchup-specific answers. The distinction matters: a newcomer can have a useful first session without expecting immediate competence against experienced players.
Why its session structure suits some players
A match gives you a compact objective, a clear result, and an immediate chance to try again. That makes Street Fighter a strong fit for players with short or irregular play windows, provided they enjoy concentrated competition. The game is not primarily about exploring a world or collecting materials; its progression comes from understanding decisions and executing them more reliably.
What to expect as a beginner
Expect to spend time in practice and training features before online competition feels comfortable. Learn a small set of reliable attacks, a defensive response, and the spacing at which your character’s moves work. Add more techniques only after those basics are dependable. This is editorial gameplay guidance rather than a measured difficulty rating, and the experience varies with the character and mode you choose.

What is the difference between Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter?
The franchises differ more in structure than in prestige. Resident Evil asks you to make careful decisions inside a directed adventure; Monster Hunter asks you to build knowledge over repeated hunts; Street Fighter asks you to refine decisions inside repeatable matches.
| Decision | Resident Evil | Monster Hunter | Street Fighter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core genre | Survival horror | Hunting action | Fighting |
| Typical session | Progress through an adventure, explore, solve problems, and manage resources | Prepare for a target, hunt it, collect rewards, and improve equipment | Play a match, review mistakes, practice, and play again |
| Primary social format | Primarily solo | Strong cooperative identity | Competition, with single-player content varying by title and edition |
| Main skills | Exploration, aiming, inventory choices, and resource judgment | Weapon handling, timing, equipment selection, and reading monster patterns | Controls, timing, spacing, defense, and matchup knowledge |
| Mood | Tense and frightening | Adventurous and goal-driven | Energetic and competitive |
| Best first question | Do I want a scary adventure I can work through on my own? | Do I want to prepare and hunt with friends or repeatedly improve against large targets? | Do I want short competitive rounds and a practice-heavy skill curve? |
What other Capcom series should I consider?
If none of the three main choices matches your taste, Capcom’s official catalog also groups games under Mega Man, Devil May Cry, Ace Attorney, Dead Rising, Dragon’s Dogma, and Okami, among other franchise categories. These are useful escape routes rather than interchangeable substitutes: each family has its own controls, pacing, tone, and expectations.
When another series is the better answer
- Mega Man: consider it when you want a more traditional, challenge-focused action experience rather than horror or hunting.
- Devil May Cry: consider it when expressive combat and learning stylish action matter more than a survival-horror atmosphere.
- Ace Attorney: consider it when investigation, dialogue, and courtroom problem-solving are more appealing than real-time combat.
- Dead Rising: consider it when the idea of confronting large numbers of zombies in an action-focused setting is more attractive than Resident Evil’s controlled tension.
- Dragon’s Dogma: consider it when you want a broader role-playing structure and a world built for longer-term character development.
- Okami: consider it when you want an adventure with a distinctive artistic identity rather than a horror, hunting, or tournament format.
These descriptions are decision cues, not a ranking. Use the individual game page and edition information to confirm the exact mechanics and platform before purchase.

How should I choose a Capcom game for solo play?
For a first solo experience, Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the clearest recommendation because its campaign is primarily designed around one player moving through a directed adventure. Street Fighter can also work alone if you enjoy practice, arcade-style challenges, or other single-player modes, but those options vary by title and edition. Monster Hunter supports solo hunting as a format, yet its cooperative identity and preparation loop are most persuasive when you enjoy either playing with friends or working toward shared goals.
Ask how you want to spend a quiet evening. If you want a beginning, middle, and end with tension between set pieces, choose Resident Evil. If you want a self-directed project that can continue as you improve gear and knowledge, choose Monster Hunter. If you want repeatable drills and matches, choose Street Fighter.
Which Capcom game should I buy on PS5, Xbox, Switch, or PC?
Check the individual game, edition, and storefront rather than assuming a franchise-wide platform rule. Capcom’s official catalog exposes categories for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, Epic Games Store, Android, and iOS, but that catalog coverage does not mean every entry appears on every system.
- Identify the exact game. Write down the title and year or edition, such as Resident Evil 2 (2019) or Street Fighter 6.
- Check the platform listing. Confirm that the store page names your exact console, PC storefront, or mobile operating system.
- Check edition differences. Look for standard, deluxe, expansion, or bundled versions and verify which content your friends own if you plan to play cooperatively.
- Check regional availability. Store listings, physical stock, prices, and digital availability can change by country and date.
- Check multiplayer requirements. For Monster Hunter, confirm that your group is on compatible platforms and editions; for Street Fighter, confirm the modes you intend to use.
Prices, discounts, stock, physical-versus-digital availability, platform support, and retailer listings are volatile. Confirm those details immediately before purchase instead of relying on a general franchise page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do Capcom’s franchises compare in scale?
Sales figures show why a newcomer encounters these series so often, but popularity should not decide your first game by itself. CAPCOM Co., Ltd. reported cumulative game sales exceeding 213 million units for Resident Evil and exceeding 131 million units for Monster Hunter as of June 30, 2026. Monster Hunter began with its first title in 2004, while Resident Evil debuted in 1996. CAPCOM’s corporate sales-data page identifies Street Fighter’s first arcade release as 1987.
Those figures describe cumulative franchise reach, not the quality or accessibility of a particular entry. Street Fighter’s long arcade history explains its competitive foundation; Resident Evil’s longevity explains its range of horror formats; Monster Hunter’s history explains the mature preparation-and-hunt structure. A newer player still benefits most from matching the format to personal taste.

What is the simplest decision rule?
Use this three-question rule:
- Do you want fear and exploration? Start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Choose Resident Evil 7 biohazard instead if maximum fright is the priority.
- Do you want preparation, giant monsters, and cooperation? Choose a current Monster Hunter entry that matches your platform and your friends’ edition.
- Do you want competitive rounds and deliberate practice? Choose Street Fighter 6.
If all three answers are no, browse Capcom’s other franchise categories rather than forcing yourself into the most famous options. Genre fit matters more than sales history or brand recognition.
How we picked these starting points
The recommendations use Capcom’s own franchise descriptions and beginner guidance, then organize them around the decisions a new player actually makes: genre, session structure, social format, learning curve, mood, and platform verification. Resident Evil 2 (2019) ranks first because Capcom USA explicitly recommends it to new players. Monster Hunter ranks first for cooperative hunting because Capcom describes that activity as a defining format. Street Fighter 6 is the clear current anchor for competitive fighting because Capcom’s catalog classifies it under the fighting genre. Other families are included so readers are not pushed toward a poor fit simply because those three franchises are well known.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play the earlier Resident Evil games before Resident Evil 2 (2019)?
No. The 2019 release is presented by Capcom USA as a jumping-on point for new players, so prior series completion is not a prerequisite for choosing it. You can explore earlier entries later if its characters, setting, or survival-horror structure interest you.
Can I play Monster Hunter entirely by myself?
Monster Hunter can be approached as a solo progression project, but its defining appeal also includes cooperating with friends. Before buying, decide whether you enjoy repeating hunts and managing equipment even when no group is available.
Is Street Fighter 6 suitable if I have never played a fighting game?
Yes, if you are comfortable treating the first sessions as practice rather than an immediate test of mastery. Start with a small set of reliable actions and learn spacing and defense gradually; competitive competence takes continued practice.
Which of these games works best in very short sessions?
Street Fighter’s match-based structure is the most naturally compact because a match has a clear start and finish. Resident Evil and Monster Hunter can be paused, but their exploration and hunt preparation loops are easier to enjoy when you have time to maintain context.
How can I avoid buying the wrong Capcom edition?
Search for the exact title, year, platform, and edition together, then compare the store listing with the version your friends own. Check regional pricing, physical or digital availability, included expansions, and multiplayer compatibility immediately before purchase.
