Yes, a reported hardware modification adapts Yamaha’s SW60XG ISA sound card for standalone MIDI use by adding MIDI input and output connections and circuitry. The available coverage describes the approach and schematic, but does not provide a complete written build guide or verified component values—so it is not enough to reproduce the modification safely and reliably from text alone.

What the SW60XG standalone MIDI hack does

The Yamaha SW60XG is an ISA PC sound card with an XG sound module. A 2013 Hackaday article describes a project that modifies the card so it can be used as a MIDI device outside its normal computer-card setup. The project includes MIDI input and output connections and patches to conductors on both sides of the card’s edge connector. Hackaday’s project coverage summarizes the author’s video and schematic.

This is a hardware conversion, not simply a setting that makes the unmodified card independent of a PC. The SW60XG was designed as a computer card; Yamaha’s official manuals index lists its Owner’s Manual, which describes sound-module use and MIDI setup in a computer context, including a MIDI port address and driver.

What parts and details are documented?

Hackaday’s description names three circuit elements: pull-up resistors, a hardware reset circuit, and an optoisolator. It also describes MIDI input and output connections and modifications to the card’s edge-connector conductors. The retrieved article text does not state resistor values, identify specific part numbers, or give a complete connection-by-connection procedure.

Yamaha ISA Sound Audio Card
  • ISA 16bits sound card
  • with game port.
  • for use with PC
  • Named components: pull-up resistors and an optoisolator.
  • Other named circuitry: a hardware reset circuit.
  • Connections and modifications: MIDI input and output connections, plus patches to conductors on both sides of the card’s edge connector.
  • Not established in the available description: exact component values, precise wiring instructions, or evidence that the modification was independently reproduced or tested.

That distinction matters: the named parts are not a complete bill of materials. Do not select components or attempt wiring based only on this summary. The original schematic and video would need to be examined for exact connections and component ratings before treating the project as a build procedure.

Hardware conversion versus XGedit95 “Stand Alone Mode”

“Standalone” also appears in XGedit95, but it refers to a software configuration rather than the physical SW60XG modification. XGedit95’s manual says the SW60XG driver has no MIDI input port, so an alternate interface must provide MIDI input. That arrangement still uses a computer and another MIDI input interface.

Meaning of “standalone” What changes Is a computer in the MIDI path? Extra MIDI interface circuitry
SW60XG hardware project The card is physically modified, with MIDI input and output connections and added circuitry, as described by Hackaday. The project is presented as adapting the card for standalone use; the coverage does not provide a complete implementation guide. Yes. The described project adds MIDI connections and circuit elements.
XGedit95 software mode A software routing/configuration option; the SW60XG itself is not physically converted. Yes. XGedit95 runs in the computer environment. An alternate MIDI input interface is needed because the SW60XG driver lacks a MIDI input port, according to the manual.

The XGedit95 details are in its user manual, page 41. This mode should not be mistaken for the hardware hack merely because it uses the same “standalone” label.

What the original card was designed for

The SW60XG is vintage ISA hardware, not a modern USB MIDI module. Yamaha’s manual documents it in a computer setup. A June 1996 Computer Gaming World review describes the board as serving a role similar to Yamaha’s DB50XG daughterboard and notes the SW60XG’s own 18-bit DAC output. Those historical descriptions do not establish compatibility with present-day computers or guarantee that a particular card is available or functional.

If you are looking to try the project, first confirm you have the exact SW60XG model and can consult the original schematic and video cited by Hackaday’s article. The coverage is a project overview, not a substitute for verified wiring instructions; do not infer missing values or connections from the component names alone.
