If an Xbox Play Anywhere game or save is missing, first check that the exact digital edition carries the Play Anywhere badge and that both devices are signed in to the Microsoft account associated with the game. Play Anywhere does not cover every title available on Xbox and PC, and a subscription that lets you play a game is not the same as owning it.
Check whether the game and your access qualify
Look for the Play Anywhere badge on the exact edition
Find the game’s listing on the Xbox website or in the Microsoft Store and check for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge. A game being available on both Xbox and PC does not, by itself, mean one digital purchase grants access on both. The program applies to participating digital titles. Check purchase versus subscription access
Make sure the account you are using either bought the digital game or currently has access to it through a subscription. A Game Pass subscription is an access route, not a permanent purchase of every included game. Microsoft sets out separate usage rules for Play Anywhere titles and subscription access in its Microsoft Services Agreement.
Use the account tied to the game
On Xbox and PC, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the purchase or current access. Microsoft ties the user license to the account, and Play Anywhere progress to the player’s gamertag. If the game appears on one device but not another, compare the signed-in account and gamertag before changing anything else.

If the game is missing or says you do not own it
- Verify the listing: Confirm that the exact digital edition has the Xbox Play Anywhere badge. Do not infer cross-entitlement from separate Xbox and PC listings.
- Verify access: Check whether the signed-in account bought the game or currently has subscription access. If it was bought on a different account, sign in with that account.
- Check the PC requirements: A license does not guarantee that a PC can run the game. Review the publisher’s minimum system requirements for the PC version.
- Escalate an unresolved license issue: If the account and entitlement appear correct but the game remains unavailable, contact Xbox or Microsoft account and purchase support with the title and storefront details. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish one universal repair or refund procedure for every case.
If your save is missing or out of date
Match the Xbox account and gamertag
Make sure both devices are using the same Xbox account and gamertag. Play Anywhere progress is associated with the player’s gamertag; signing into a different account can make the expected progress appear absent.
Finish the session on the other device
Close the game on the device where it was last open, allow that session to finish, then launch it on the second device. Microsoft’s usage rules limit play of the same game to one device at a time. This is a sensible check before testing the second device, not a guaranteed method of repairing a save.

Confirm the title supports the relevant cross-progression
Play Anywhere saves are not independent of how a game is built. Microsoft’s developer documentation describes cross-device cloud saves using a shared TitleID and the same Xbox User ID, or a compliant save solution. Check that the title supports the cross-progression you expect; a missing save may be specific to the game’s implementation rather than an account-wide fault. See Microsoft’s game save documentation.
What to expect across devices
Microsoft’s August 2025 update describes Play Anywhere across Xbox consoles, PC, and supported handhelds. When signed in, players can carry supported saves, add-ons, and achievements between devices. That does not mean every game is included, every PC meets its requirements, or every title implements saves identically. Check the badge and the game’s own support information for the specific title.

Checks to avoid treating as universal fixes
Do not delete local saves, reset Windows, or reinstall Gaming Services as a first-line, one-size-fits-all response to a missing Play Anywhere save or license. Those actions are not established as universal fixes in the Microsoft guidance cited here. Start with eligibility, account, access type, device-session, and game-specific save support; seek title-specific support if those checks do not explain the problem.
