To use these features on an Xbox console, connect a wired USB keyboard and mouse, verify that the specific game supports mouse-and-keyboard input, then check your display before changing video options. Open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details to see what the console actually detects. If 120 Hz is available, select it under Refresh rate; enable Allow Variable Refresh Rate under Video modes when the entire TV, HDMI input, cable and receiver path support VRR.
Keyboard navigation and mouse-and-keyboard gameplay are separate capabilities. Likewise, a 120 Hz output setting does not guarantee that a game renders at 120 frames per second. The instructions below apply to Xbox consoles, not Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser.
What do you need before changing Xbox settings?
Start with the equipment and software combination, because no menu option can add support that a game or HDMI input does not provide.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- For controls: use a wired USB keyboard and, for pointer control, a wired USB mouse. Xbox says these devices can be used for navigation in select games and apps, while a keyboard can also help you move around the Xbox interface. Mouse-and-keyboard gameplay is not universal. Confirm support in the particular title or app rather than assuming that a keyboard working in the dashboard means the mouse will work in-game. See Xbox accessibility guidance.
- For 120 Hz and VRR: use a display whose exact model supports the desired resolution and refresh rate on the HDMI input connected to the console. A television advertised as 4K may accept 4K at 60 Hz but 120 Hz only on one HDMI socket, or 120 Hz only at a lower resolution.
- For the signal path: check the HDMI cable, any AV receiver or switch, and the firmware and input mode of the display. Xbox recommends trying a Series X with its supplied Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and a direct connection when diagnosing compatibility.
- For games: the game must implement a 120-FPS mode to take advantage of that output. A console setting of 120 Hz changes the display signal; it does not force every title to render at 120 FPS.
Computer-monitor specifications also require care. A monitor may advertise a high refresh rate for DisplayPort while offering a lower limit over HDMI. Use the monitor’s manual or on-screen input information to verify the HDMI capability.

How do you connect a keyboard and mouse to Xbox?
Plug each wired USB device directly into an available USB port on the console, then open the game or app that you want to use. Xbox documents wired USB mice and keyboards for navigation in select games and apps; it does not promise that every title will expose mouse controls or that every dashboard screen will show a mouse pointer.
- Connect the keyboard’s USB cable to the Xbox.
- Connect the mouse’s USB cable. If a hub is involved, remove it temporarily and test each device directly so that a hub is not mistaken for a compatibility problem.
- Use the keyboard to move through the dashboard and open the intended game or app.
- Check that title’s own control or accessibility information for mouse-and-keyboard support. A keyboard may work for text entry or menus even when the game does not support mouse aiming.
- If the game offers separate keyboard, mouse, controller or cross-play options, select the appropriate controls inside the game. The exact labels differ by title and can change with updates.
Do not treat a cloud-game compatibility list as a console-game list. Xbox Wire reported more than 190 cloud games with mouse-and-keyboard support in April 2026, but that dated figure describes browser/cloud availability, not the number of games installed and played locally on Xbox consoles. Cloud instructions use xbox.com/play in Edge or Chrome, which is a different setup.
How do you check whether Xbox supports 4K, 120 Hz and VRR on your display?
Read the console’s detection screen before changing the refresh rate. It reports the capabilities that Xbox sees through the connected HDMI path, which is more useful than relying on a generic television or monitor advertisement.
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings.
- Choose General > TV & display options.
- Open 4K TV details.
- Review the listed capabilities for resolution, 4K, HDR, 120 Hz and variable refresh. If an expected capability is missing, stop here and check the display input, cable, firmware and routing before buying anything.
Xbox notes that 120 Hz can depend on both resolution and the HDMI socket. Some displays provide 120 Hz at 1080p or 1440p but not at 4K; others require an HDMI 2.1-capable input or an enhanced-input mode enabled in the television’s own menus. A receiver or switch can also prevent the console from detecting a mode that the television supports. The official Xbox display-readiness guide explains these dependencies.

How do you turn on 120 Hz on Xbox?
When 120 Hz appears in the detected capabilities, select it from the TV and display menu. If it does not appear, changing the setting elsewhere will not create a supported 120-Hz signal.
- Go to Settings > General > TV & display options.
- Open the Refresh rate menu.
- Select 120 Hz if it is offered.
- Accept the display change and confirm that the picture remains stable.
- Open 4K TV details again if you need to verify what the console is currently detecting.
Menu wording can move slightly after system updates, but the documented labels are TV & display options, Refresh rate and 120 Hz. Xbox’s engineering explanation describes 4K transmission time changing from 16.6 ms at 60 Hz to 8.3 ms at 120 Hz on supporting televisions. Those are signal-frame transmission figures, not a promise of total controller-to-screen latency for every setup; game engine, display processing and peripherals still matter. See Xbox’s latency explanation.
How do you enable VRR on Xbox?
VRR allows a compatible display to vary its timing when a game’s frame delivery is uneven. It can reduce tearing and make fluctuating frame rates look smoother, but it cannot turn a 60-Hz-only panel into a 120-Hz panel or raise a game’s frame rate by itself.

- Choose Video modes.
- Enable Allow Variable Refresh Rate.
- Check the display’s own gaming or enhanced-input setting if its manual says VRR must be enabled there as well.
- Return to 4K TV details and confirm that Xbox still detects the expected capabilities.
VRR support is a chain property: the console, HDMI cable, display input, display firmware and any receiver or switch must all pass it. Dolby Vision is a separate picture feature, not a prerequisite for VRR or 120 Hz. Xbox describes combinations of Dolby Vision, VRR and up to 120 FPS as dependent on the particular television and, in some cases, its firmware; see the Xbox Dolby Vision announcement.

What is the difference between 120 Hz and 120 FPS?
120 Hz is the refresh rate of the signal sent to the display: the screen can be updated up to 120 times per second. 120 FPS is the game’s rendering rate. A game may render at 60 FPS, an unlocked rate, or a lower variable rate while the console still outputs a 120-Hz signal.
To see a real 120-FPS benefit, the title must include a 120-FPS mode and the display path must accept the required resolution and refresh rate. Some games provide separate quality and performance modes, while others cap their frame rate independently of the console’s global setting. Check the game’s own graphics menu and documentation; do not infer its frame rate solely from the Xbox menu.
Why is 120 Hz missing from the Xbox menu?
The most common cause is that the connected path does not advertise 120 Hz at the selected resolution. Work through these checks in order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use the correct HDMI input. Try the socket identified by the display manual as 4K/120, HDMI 2.1, high bandwidth or enhanced. Labels vary by manufacturer.
- Enable the display’s enhanced mode. Some televisions hide high-bandwidth modes until an input setting such as Enhanced, Deep Color or Input Signal Plus is enabled. Use the model’s documentation rather than guessing.
- Connect directly. Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch. If 120 Hz appears in a direct connection, the intermediate device or its firmware is the limiting link.
- Try the supplied cable. For Series X, use the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable before purchasing a replacement. A replacement is justified only when the existing cable or route cannot meet the required mode.
- Update firmware. Update the television, receiver and switch where applicable, then restart the console and re-open 4K TV details.
- Test a lower resolution. If 120 Hz appears at 1080p or 1440p but not 4K, the display may support 120 Hz only at that lower resolution.
A high-refresh computer monitor can show the same symptom when its specification applies only to DisplayPort. Confirm the HDMI limit before concluding that the Xbox or cable is defective.

What should you do if VRR causes flicker or picture corruption?
Change one variable at a time so that the failed link is identifiable. If the picture becomes unstable after enabling VRR, return to Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes and turn off Allow Variable Refresh Rate. Xbox also documents trying 60 Hz as a fallback when diagnosing visual problems.
- Disable VRR and check whether the corruption disappears.
- If necessary, set Refresh rate to 60 Hz and test again.
- Reconnect the console directly to the display with the supplied cable.
- Verify the display’s firmware and input mode.
- Re-enable 120 Hz first, then VRR, testing after each change.
This process distinguishes a VRR interaction from a general bandwidth or cable problem. It does not prove that the television is defective, and it does not mean every setup requires a new cable. The official troubleshooting sequence is summarized in Xbox’s TV-readiness guidance.

Which settings should you use for common Xbox setups?
| Setup | Recommended starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 4K television with a confirmed 4K/120 input | Refresh rate: 120 Hz; Allow Variable Refresh Rate: On | The correct HDMI socket, enhanced input mode, current firmware and a cable rated for the path |
| Monitor supporting 120 Hz only at 1440p | Select 120 Hz after choosing the supported resolution | That the advertised refresh rate applies to HDMI, not only DisplayPort |
| Television that supports 4K/60 but not 4K/120 | Use 60 Hz at 4K, or test a lower resolution if the display documents 120 Hz there | Whether VRR is supported at the chosen resolution and input |
| Receiver or switch between Xbox and display | Test direct connection first, then add the receiver or switch back | Whether every device in the chain passes the required resolution, 120 Hz and VRR |
| Game without mouse-and-keyboard support | Use the controller, even if the keyboard works in the dashboard | The title’s own input documentation; console-wide keyboard support does not make gameplay support universal |
What are the key limitations to remember?
- Xbox’s documented keyboard-and-mouse support is selective and uses wired USB devices; do not assume Bluetooth-only peripherals or a universal mouse pointer.
- Support is game- and app-specific. A keyboard that navigates menus does not establish mouse aiming in a game.
- The 120-Hz option is an output capability, not a frame-rate guarantee.
- VRR smooths timing variation within the display’s supported range; it does not create additional frames.
- Display claims are model- and input-specific. Resolution, HDMI port, firmware and intermediate equipment all matter.
- Cloud Gaming compatibility figures cannot be used as evidence for locally installed console games.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a wireless or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse on Xbox?
Xbox’s published accessibility guidance specifically calls out wired USB mice and keyboards. Wireless support can vary by device, adapter and system update, so a wired USB connection is the documented baseline when you need predictable console navigation or game support.
Does enabling 120 Hz make every Xbox game run at 120 frames per second?
No. The game must provide a suitable performance mode, and its engine may still cap or vary the frame rate. The console’s 120-Hz setting only determines the refresh rate of the output signal when the display accepts it.
Should VRR stay enabled if my television flickers?
Not necessarily. Turn off Allow Variable Refresh Rate and test at 60 Hz, then reconnect directly and check firmware. If the image is stable without VRR, leave it disabled for that display or investigate the display manufacturer’s compatibility guidance.
Why does my 144-Hz monitor show only 60 Hz on Xbox?
The monitor’s 144-Hz specification may apply to DisplayPort, while its HDMI input has a lower limit. Check the exact HDMI input specification and the resolution at which 120 Hz is supported, then confirm the result in Xbox’s 4K TV details screen.
Where can I find Xbox’s current keyboard-and-mouse game list?
There is no single console-wide list that proves support for every installed title. Check the individual game’s documentation or in-game control options; cloud catalogs and their dated support counts describe cloud play and should not be treated as a local-console compatibility list.
The Bottom Line
Use wired USB peripherals and verify support per game. For video, trust 4K TV details, select 120 Hz only when the complete HDMI path supports it, and enable Allow Variable Refresh Rate only after confirming the display’s compatibility. If anything fails, test the supplied cable and a direct connection, then change one setting at a time.
