Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online are built for different jobs. Game Pass is a rotating game-access catalog for Xbox, Windows PC, supported handhelds and cloud-enabled devices; its higher tiers add day-one releases and partner subscriptions. Nintendo Switch Online is primarily a platform membership for Switch and Switch 2, adding online multiplayer, supported-game cloud saves, Nintendo Classics, Nintendo Music, member offers and, with Expansion Pack, selected DLC and more retro systems.
Choose Game Pass if you want a broad library across Xbox and PC, frequent new releases or cloud streaming. Choose Nintendo Switch Online if you already play on Switch, mainly need online play and backups, or value Nintendo’s classic libraries, family membership and included DLC. The services are not like-for-like, so the best choice depends on your hardware and what you will actually use.
What is the difference between Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online?
Game Pass sells access to a large, changing catalog of games across several device types. Nintendo Switch Online sells online platform features first, then adds a curated selection of classic games and member benefits. Comparing the headline game counts alone can therefore produce the wrong answer: one service is designed for breadth and discovery, while the other is designed to make a Nintendo console more useful.

| Primary purpose | Access to a rotating library on Xbox, Windows PC, supported devices and qualifying cloud platforms | Online play and platform services for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, with classic libraries and member extras |
| Entry option | Essential: 50+ games and online console multiplayer | Standard membership: online play, supported-game cloud saves, NES/SNES/Game Boy Classics, Nintendo Music and offers |
| Premium option | Ultimate: 500+ games, day-one releases, cloud play and partner benefits | Expansion Pack: additional classic systems, selected DLC and selected Switch 2 upgrade packs |
| Day-one releases | Included with Ultimate and PC Game Pass under Microsoft’s current overview; not included with Essential | Not presented as a day-one game-library service |
| Cloud gaming | Available on qualifying plans and supported devices, with plan-specific monthly limits | Not a core feature of Nintendo’s membership description |
| Family option | The current plan information used here does not establish a family tier | Family memberships support up to eight Nintendo Accounts |
That distinction explains most of the practical differences. A player who owns only a Switch will not benefit from the breadth of a Game Pass catalog unless they also have compatible Xbox, PC or cloud hardware. Conversely, a PC player cannot use Nintendo Switch Online to obtain Nintendo’s console library or online services.

What does Xbox Game Pass include?
Microsoft currently lists four choices: Xbox Game Pass Essential, Xbox Game Pass Premium, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The catalog size, day-one policy, cloud allowance and bundled services change by tier. Microsoft also warns that titles, counts, features and platform availability vary by time, region, plan and game.
Xbox Game Pass Essential
Essential is the entry-level console-oriented plan. Microsoft’s current overview lists:
- More than 50 games playable on Xbox console, PC and supported devices.
- Online console multiplayer.
- Five hours of monthly cloud playtime.
- In-game benefits for selected titles, including examples such as League of Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone.
- Rewards points.
Essential does not include new-release games on day one. It is best understood as a way to combine console online play with a modest catalog, rather than as the full Game Pass experience.
Xbox Game Pass Premium
Premium expands the catalog to more than 200 games on console, PC and supported devices. It includes online console multiplayer, in-game benefits and ten hours of monthly cloud playtime in Microsoft’s current overview. New Xbox-published games are scheduled to join the library within one year of launch, subject to Microsoft’s stated exclusions, terms and regional availability. Premium also provides two-times Rewards earning compared with the Essential baseline described by Xbox.
The “within one year” policy matters if you are choosing Premium for a specific upcoming release. It is not the same promise as day-one access, and the exact timing can depend on the game and Microsoft’s terms.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
Ultimate is the broadest console-and-PC package. Microsoft lists:
- More than 500 games on Xbox console, PC and supported devices.
- New games on day one, subject to stated exclusions and availability conditions.
- EA Play.
- Fortnite Crew.
- Ubisoft+ Classics.
- Fifteen hours of monthly cloud playtime.
- Online console multiplayer.
- In-game benefits and enhanced Rewards earning.
Ultimate is the tier for someone who wants one subscription to cover a large portion of Xbox and PC gaming, try new releases without buying each immediately, and stream games when local installation is inconvenient. The partner subscriptions can add value if you already use those services; they should not be treated as equivalent to owning their entire catalogs.
PC Game Pass
PC Game Pass is the PC-focused option. The current Xbox comparison page lists more than 300 games on PC, day-one releases, EA Play, in-game benefits and Rewards earning. Microsoft’s comparison information says cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass, so a PC subscriber should not assume they receive Ultimate’s cloud entitlement simply because both plans include PC games.
If you play exclusively on Windows PC, PC Game Pass is the relevant comparison point. If you also need Xbox console multiplayer, console access or the Ultimate partner bundles, compare those requirements separately instead of choosing by the game count.

Do all Game Pass tiers include the same games and benefits?
No. A title can be available on one platform or tier and absent from another, and the catalog changes over time. The number shown for a plan is a current “50+,” “200+,” “300+” or “500+” figure, not a permanent inventory or a guarantee that a particular game will remain.

Before subscribing for one particular game, check its platform, tier and current library status. Microsoft says subscribers retain access only while the subscription is active and the game remains in the Game Pass library. Canceling a subscription or a title leaving the service ends subscription-based access; it does not turn the game into a permanent purchase.

What does Nintendo Switch Online include?
Nintendo offers standard Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Both tiers are centered on Switch and Switch 2 services rather than a large, rotating modern-game catalog.
Standard Nintendo Switch Online
In the United States, an individual membership costs $19.99 for one year. Nintendo also lists individual one-month and three-month options at $3.99 and $7.99. The family membership costs $34.99 per year and supports up to eight Nintendo Accounts.
Standard membership includes:
- Online multiplayer in compatible games.
- Save Data Cloud backup for supported games.
- Nintendo Classics selections from NES, Super NES and Game Boy.
- The Nintendo Music smart-device app.
- Member-exclusive offers.
- GameChat access on Nintendo Switch 2, subject to Nintendo’s conditions.
“Supported games” is an important qualification for cloud saves: Nintendo does not describe the feature as a universal backup for every Switch title. Likewise, the Classics catalogs are selected libraries, not every game released for those systems.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Expansion Pack includes everything in the standard membership. In the United States, the individual annual price is $49.99, while the annual family price is $79.99 for up to eight Nintendo Accounts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Expansion Pack adds:
- Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics.
- Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics.
- Virtual Boy Nintendo Classics.
- SEGA Genesis Nintendo Classics.
- Nintendo GameCube Nintendo Classics on Nintendo Switch 2.
- Selected Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs.
- Selected downloadable content at no additional charge, including the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise.
The wording “selected” applies to both DLC and upgrade packs. Expansion Pack is not a pass for all Nintendo downloadable content. Its value depends on whether you play the included products and whether you own the hardware needed for a particular library, such as Switch 2 for GameCube Classics.
What is not included in Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo does not position either membership as an unlimited catalog of current first-party and third-party games. You should not expect every Nintendo release, every DLC pack or every retro title to be included. The service provides the specific classic libraries, cloud-save support, music app, offers and selected DLC that Nintendo lists for the tier.
Does Xbox Game Pass include online multiplayer?
Yes, the current Essential, Premium and Ultimate descriptions include online console multiplayer. That feature is part of the value proposition for an Xbox console owner who wants to play compatible multiplayer games online and also receive a game catalog.

PC Game Pass is a PC-focused plan, so it should not be read as a replacement for a console multiplayer membership. PC games generally use their own online account systems and requirements; the plan comparison supplied by Xbox does not present PC Game Pass as a console online-play tier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a console player who wants only online access and occasional catalog games, Essential may be enough. For day-one releases, cloud play or the broadest catalog, compare Premium and Ultimate rather than assuming the cheapest tier includes every benefit.
Can I play Game Pass games on PC or in the cloud?
Game Pass supports PC access on plans that list PC games, and qualifying plans support cloud play on compatible devices and in supported regions. Ultimate has the most complete combination of console, PC and cloud features in the current overview. Essential, Premium and Ultimate list five, ten and fifteen hours of monthly cloud playtime respectively.
Cloud play is not unlimited. Microsoft says monthly limits vary by plan and that a supported device and region are required. Some games may be cloud-playable only after entering the service, while other cloud-playable games may be sold separately. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming according to Xbox’s comparison page.
Use cloud play as a convenience feature, not as a guarantee that every Game Pass title will stream on every device. Verify the game’s cloud status, your region and the device requirements before selecting a plan primarily for streaming.
Does Nintendo Switch Online include free games?
It includes access to selected Nintendo Classics libraries, but it is not a general “free games” catalog comparable to Game Pass. Standard membership provides selected NES, Super NES and Game Boy games; Expansion Pack adds selected Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy and SEGA Genesis titles, plus GameCube Classics on Switch 2.
The distinction is useful when estimating value. If you want a large and frequently changing selection of modern games, Nintendo Switch Online is unlikely to meet that need by itself. If you want Nintendo’s curated retro collections alongside online play and cloud saves, the included libraries may be the main reason to subscribe.
Which subscription is better for families?
Nintendo has the clearer family proposition: its U.S. family memberships support up to eight Nintendo Accounts. Standard family membership is $34.99 per year, and Expansion Pack family membership is $79.99 per year. That structure can suit a household with several Nintendo accounts that needs online play, cloud saves and shared access to the membership benefits.
The Game Pass information used for this comparison does not establish a current family plan. Do not assume that one Xbox subscription automatically covers multiple people or consoles under a family arrangement. Check Microsoft’s current account terms for your region before budgeting for a household.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Family value also depends on the games your household plays. Nintendo’s Expansion Pack can be especially relevant if several people use the included DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Game Pass may be better for a household with both Xbox and Windows PC players, but only if the selected plan’s device and account terms fit everyone’s use.
How much do the subscriptions cost, and how should you judge value?
Nintendo publishes straightforward U.S. annual prices for its two tiers: $19.99 individual or $34.99 family for standard Nintendo Switch Online, and $49.99 individual or $79.99 family for Expansion Pack. A seven-day Nintendo Switch Online trial is available subject to account, age, payment and auto-renewal conditions.
Game Pass prices are not quoted here because Microsoft changes pricing by plan, market and date, and the supplied current plan information establishes features and catalog sizes rather than a single durable U.S. price table. Check the Xbox account store or official plan page immediately before subscribing.
Do not calculate a universal winner from the 50+, 200+, 300+ and 500+ figures. Game Pass counts describe a rotating catalog whose contents can leave the service. Nintendo’s value is concentrated in online play, supported-game cloud backups, classic systems, family sharing, Nintendo Music and selected DLC. A person who plays one included Nintendo DLC pack repeatedly may get more practical value from Expansion Pack than from a much larger catalog they rarely open.

If you own both platforms, you do not have to choose one service as a replacement for the other. Game Pass can cover Xbox or PC discovery while Nintendo Switch Online supplies Switch multiplayer, backups and Nintendo-specific benefits. Treat them as separate subscriptions and cancel either one when its particular use case disappears.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you decide between standard and premium tiers?
Start with the feature you would miss most, then pay only for the tier that supplies it.
- Identify your primary hardware. If your only active system is a Switch or Switch 2, Game Pass is not a substitute for Nintendo’s online membership. If you play on Xbox or Windows PC, Nintendo Switch Online cannot provide your multiplayer or catalog needs.
- List the games you will actually play in the next three months. For Game Pass, check whether each title is on your platform and tier. For Nintendo, check whether the classic system or DLC you want is included in standard membership or requires Expansion Pack.
- Decide whether launch access matters. Choose Ultimate or PC Game Pass for the day-one policy listed by Xbox. Essential does not include day-one games, and Premium’s policy is within one year for new Xbox-published games under stated terms.
- Check how you play away from the console. Cloud play can make Ultimate useful on supported devices, but monthly limits, region support and game eligibility apply. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming.
- For a household, count accounts rather than controllers. Nintendo’s family membership supports up to eight Nintendo Accounts. The current Game Pass information here does not verify a family tier, so confirm Microsoft’s latest account rules before assuming shared access.
- Recheck volatile details at checkout. Game counts, prices, included partners, DLC lists and platform availability can change. A subscription decision based on one specific title should be revisited when that title’s listing changes.
What are the biggest limitations and subscription pitfalls?
- Catalog access is temporary. A Game Pass title can leave the library, and access also ends when the subscription expires or is canceled. Subscription access is not permanent ownership.
- Game counts are not directly comparable. Xbox advertises broad catalog totals, while Nintendo lists curated systems and selected games. A larger number does not automatically mean better value for a Switch owner.
- Day-one wording is tier-specific. Essential does not include new releases on day one. PC Game Pass and Ultimate do under Microsoft’s current overview, with exclusions and availability terms.
- Cloud play has conditions. You need a supported device and region, and each qualifying plan has a stated monthly allowance. Do not assume all titles or all devices are eligible.
- Nintendo DLC is selective. Expansion Pack includes named and selected DLC, not all downloadable content for Nintendo games.
- Switch 2 features have hardware conditions. GameChat and GameCube Classics apply under Nintendo’s stated Switch 2 conditions; they should not be described as identical features on every Switch model.
- Classic catalogs are curated. Standard and Expansion Pack libraries contain selected games from the listed systems, not every NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, N64, Genesis, Virtual Boy or GameCube release.
- Regional terms matter. Prices, available games, cloud support and features can vary by country. The dollar figures in this article are current U.S. figures supplied for Nintendo memberships.
Is Nintendo Switch Online worth it if you only play online?
For a Switch owner whose main requirement is online multiplayer, standard Nintendo Switch Online is the focused choice. It also adds supported-game cloud saves, the basic NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries, Nintendo Music and member offers, so you are not paying solely for matchmaking.
Expansion Pack becomes harder to justify if you will not use its extra classic systems, selected DLC or Switch 2 features. Compare the annual upgrade cost with the specific DLC and retro libraries you expect to use rather than assuming the larger tier is automatically better.

Is Xbox Game Pass worth it without cloud gaming?
Yes, cloud play is optional. The catalog, day-one policy, console multiplayer and PC access can still be the main reasons to subscribe. Ultimate is most compelling when you will use several of its benefits, such as Xbox and PC access, new releases, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics and cloud sessions.
If you never use cloud play or the partner services, compare Essential, Premium and PC Game Pass on the games and launch timing you actually need. Paying for Ultimate solely because it has the largest headline number may not be efficient for a single-platform player.
Bottom line: which subscription includes more?
Xbox Game Pass includes more modern game-access features: a larger rotating catalog, PC support, qualifying cloud play, day-one access on Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and partner benefits on Ultimate. Nintendo Switch Online includes a narrower but distinctive set of platform benefits: Switch online multiplayer, supported-game cloud saves, Nintendo Classics, Nintendo Music, member offers, family sharing and selected DLC through Expansion Pack.
Choose the service that matches the device you own and the benefits you will use repeatedly. Game Pass is the stronger fit for Xbox/PC players seeking breadth and new releases; Nintendo Switch Online is the stronger fit for Switch and Switch 2 owners seeking online play, Nintendo’s retro libraries, family access and selected Nintendo extras.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I subscribe to Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online at the same time?
Yes. They are separate services tied to different platform ecosystems, so a player who owns both an Xbox or Windows PC and a Switch can maintain both memberships. Each subscription still requires its own active account and provides benefits only on the platforms and titles covered by its terms.
What happens to a Game Pass game when it leaves the library?
Your subscription access ends when Microsoft removes the title, even if your subscription itself is still active. You would need to purchase the game separately or use another legitimate access method to keep playing it.
Does Nintendo Switch Online include every Nintendo game or DLC pack?
No. Nintendo describes curated Classics libraries and selected included DLC, not the entire Nintendo catalog. Expansion Pack includes specific products such as the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise, while other DLC remains separate.

Can PC Game Pass subscribers stream games from the cloud?
Not under the current Xbox comparison information used here. PC Game Pass lists PC games, day-one releases and EA Play, while cloud gaming is identified as unavailable on that plan; cloud access requires a qualifying plan such as Ultimate, plus a supported device and region.
