Most Xbox Game Pass redemption failures become easier to solve once you separate two cases: the code is rejected before redemption, or Microsoft accepts it but the subscription, game, or benefit is missing afterward. Start by signing in to the Microsoft account that should own the code, because Xbox says a redeemed code cannot be transferred. Then use the correct redemption route, match the exact error to its documented remedy, verify the code’s region and plan, and inspect Services & subscriptions and redemption history before buying anything else. Is the code rejected, or was it accepted without unlocking Game Pass?
The first decision determines the rest of the fix. A rejection happens before the code is attached to an account; an entitlement problem happens after Microsoft records the redemption. Do not treat an accepted code as proof that every Game Pass game or feature is included.
- Rejected before redemption: you see an error while entering or submitting the code. Check the signed-in account, entry point, code format, update status, region, and the exact wording of the error.
- Accepted but unavailable: redemption history shows the transaction, but Game Pass or a game is not visible. Check Services & subscriptions, the plan tier, platform, region, and the title’s current availability.

Confirm the Microsoft account that should own the subscription
On the redemption screen, verify the displayed Microsoft account and gamertag. Xbox’s warning is explicit: “Just make sure you’re signed in to the correct Microsoft account before you redeem your code because you won’t be able to transfer it.” A code redeemed to a family member’s account, a second Microsoft login, or the wrong gamertag generally cannot be moved afterward.
If you believe the code was already used, open the intended account’s order or redemption history and its Services & subscriptions page. Those records tell you whether the code was consumed by that account; do not assume an absent subscription means the code is still unused.
Identify what kind of offer you bought
A Game Pass subscription code, an Xbox gift card, and a console’s Digital Direct offer are different products:

- An Xbox or Microsoft gift card adds account balance. You then use that balance to purchase the Game Pass plan you want; it does not validate or repair a rejected subscription code.
- Digital Direct attaches an offer to eligible hardware. It is not necessarily a 25-character code, so follow Microsoft’s Digital Direct guidance for that console offer rather than searching for a normal code.
Xbox documents a 25-character format for its ordinary codes. If the seller gave you a different delivery method, retain the offer instructions and receipt instead of altering characters or guessing missing ones.
Check the market printed on the offer
Compare the code’s stated country or market with the Microsoft account and Store region. Microsoft says items obtained in one region may not work in another, explicitly including Game Pass. A retailer that sold the wrong regional code is the appropriate first contact; changing your account region is not a reliable bypass.
How do I redeem Game Pass on each supported device?
Use the route that matches the device. If an app fails, the web route can provide a separate path, but sign in with the same intended account.

Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Store.
- Press the View button.
- Select Redeem.
- Enter the 25-character code and follow the confirmation prompts.
Before confirming, read the account shown on the screen. Once accepted, the code is tied to that account.
Microsoft Store on Windows
- Open Microsoft Store and select the account icon.
- Choose Redeem code or gift cards.
- Enter the code, then review the account and offer displayed before confirming.
Xbox PC app
- Open the Xbox PC app and select your gamerpic.
- Choose Settings.
- Under Redeem a code, enter the 25-character code.
- Confirm the displayed account and complete the prompts.
Web redemption
Use the official web redemption page at xbox.com/en-US/redeem. Sign in first, check the account identity, enter the code, and read the offer details before selecting the final confirmation. Xbox documents console, Windows Store, Xbox PC app, and web routes; its mobile app does not provide ordinary code redemption.
How do I fix “Unable to complete this transaction. Please update to the latest version of Microsoft Store”?
That message has a specific update remedy, unlike a generic invalid-code error. Update the store or app that produced the message, then try the official web route if the app still fails.
- Microsoft Store on Windows: open Library and select Get updates.
- Xbox PC app: update the app through its available Microsoft Store update path, then reopen the Xbox PC app and retry.
- Xbox console: open Settings > System > Updates and install any available console update.
- Restart the relevant app or console after the update.
- Try web redemption with the same intended Microsoft account.
Microsoft’s documented advice applies to this update-specific message. An update is not a universal answer to every rejected code; if the wording differs, diagnose the account, region, offer type, and subscription state instead. What if the code is from the wrong region?
Do not switch regions merely to force a redemption. Microsoft recommends changing region only when you are moving to a new country or region for a long time, and Microsoft account funds cannot be transferred between regions.

Check all three locations
- The country or market printed on the code or listing.
- The country or region configured for the Microsoft account.
- The Store region on the device where you are trying to redeem.
A mismatch can block a code even when the characters are correct. If you purchased the wrong market, contact the retailer with the receipt and explain that the code does not match your account’s region. Microsoft does not promise that a temporary region toggle will make a mismatched code valid.

Why does Game Pass still look inactive after redemption?
An accepted code and an available game are separate checks. First verify that redemption was recorded on the intended account; then inspect the subscription and the game’s eligibility.
Review Services & subscriptions
Open the Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions area and check the plan name, start or end date, billing state, and recurring-billing setting. If the subscription is listed there, the code was not simply lost during entry. Sign out and back in to the Xbox app or console with that same account if the local display has not refreshed.

The current US Game Pass page separates Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC plans. Xbox’s page lists 50+ games for Essential, 200+ for Premium, 500+ for Ultimate, and 300+ for PC, while cautioning that games, features, and availability vary over time. Those counts are plan-page figures, not a permanent catalog guarantee.
- A PC-only plan does not establish console access.
- A console plan does not automatically establish PC access.
- A plan can be active while a particular title has left the catalog, is unavailable in your region, or requires a different tier.
- Cloud, online multiplayer, and other benefits depend on the plan and supported device.
Check the title’s current listing while signed into the account that owns the subscription. If the plan is active but the game remains unavailable, record the plan name, platform, region, and exact message before contacting support.
Can an existing Game Pass subscription prevent a prepaid code from working?
It can affect how a prepaid offer is applied, but there is no single rule that every code stacks, converts, or fails. Microsoft’s prepaid-subscription guidance describes a specific recurring-subscription situation: turn off recurring billing on the old subscription and redeem the prepaid code after that subscription expires.

Use Microsoft’s conditional sequence
- Open Services & subscriptions on the account that should receive the code.
- Review the active plan and its expiration or renewal date.
- If the situation matches Microsoft’s recurring-subscription guidance, turn off recurring billing for the existing subscription.
- Allow the existing subscription to expire, then redeem the prepaid code.

What should I do if Microsoft says the code was already redeemed?
Check redemption or order history while signed in to the intended account, then check Services & subscriptions. A recorded redemption may belong to a different Microsoft login, and a missing Game Pass tile alone does not prove that the code was unused.
If history shows redemption on the wrong account, Xbox’s transfer warning applies: the code cannot be moved. If history does not explain the message, keep the exact error and purchase evidence and escalate rather than repeatedly entering the code on additional accounts. Never publish the full code in a forum, social post, chat, or screenshot.

No. A gift card adds spendable Microsoft account balance; it does not repair a rejected subscription code, change its region, or reverse a redemption on the wrong account. It can be useful when you deliberately want to buy Game Pass separately from the disputed code.
Microsoft says Xbox and Microsoft gift cards are sold through participating retailers and can be used toward Game Pass. When should I contact the retailer or Microsoft?
Escalate after the account, entry route, update-specific remedy, region, subscription, and entitlement checks have produced no explanation. Contact the retailer for a wrong-market purchase or a product whose supplied code does not match what was sold. Contact Microsoft or Xbox support for unresolved redemption errors, account records, or entitlement questions.
Prepare evidence without exposing the code
- The exact on-screen error, including capitalization and punctuation.
- The device and route used: console, Microsoft Store, Xbox PC app, or web.
