For U.S. subscribers in October 2026, Xbox Game Pass Core is no longer the current plan name. The lower-cost option is now Xbox Game Pass Essential at $9.99 per month. Choose Essential if you mainly need online console multiplayer, a smaller library and basic benefits. Choose Game Pass Ultimate at $22.99 per month if you want day-one releases, the largest catalog, PC and cloud access, or bundled EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. If you only play free-to-play multiplayer games, you do not need a paid Game Pass plan at all.

The comparison below explains what changed from Core, what each current tier includes, and which subscription fits different ways of playing.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Free plan / price Platforms Checked
Game Pass Essential Budget-minded console multiplayer and a smaller rotating library 50+ games, online console multiplayer, 5 cloud-play hours per month $9.99/month (U.S. regular price) Console, PC and supported handhelds; check each title Oct 2026
Game Pass Ultimate Day-one releases, frequent players, PC and cloud users 500+ games, day-one games, 15 cloud-play hours per month, EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics $22.99/month (U.S. regular price) Console, PC and supported devices Oct 2026

Which Xbox Game Pass plan should you choose?

Essential is the sensible starting point for a console player who mainly needs paid online multiplayer and does not need every new release. Its $9.99 monthly price is less than half of Ultimate, and it still includes a 50-plus-game catalog, Play Anywhere, Rewards and a limited amount of cloud play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ultimate is the better fit for players who will use its breadth. The $22.99 plan adds day-one games, a catalog of more than 500 titles, PC access, higher cloud-play allowance and three partner services. It is easiest to justify when you regularly play on more than one device, buy new Xbox releases at launch, or would otherwise pay separately for the included services.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Choose Essential for online console multiplayer, a lower recurring bill and a curated selection of games.
  • Choose Ultimate for day-one releases, the biggest catalog, regular cloud gaming, PC play or the bundled partner benefits.
  • Choose neither paid tier if your only multiplayer games are free-to-play titles.

Think about what you actually play before choosing by catalog size alone. Someone who plays one or two familiar console games online may get what they need from Essential even if Ultimate offers many more titles. A player who wants to try a broad selection, play on PC as well as console, or use cloud gaming often has more reasons to consider Ultimate. The plan with the longest feature list is not automatically the best value if you will not use those features.

What happened to Xbox Game Pass Core?

Core was the name Xbox used for its lower-priced tier from 2023. Xbox introduced it in July 2023 as “the evolution of Xbox Live Gold,” combining online console multiplayer, member deals and a select catalog of more than 25 games. The launch price was $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year.

Xbox’s 2024 plan guide still described Core as the budget route to online multiplayer, discounts and a small game catalog, while Ultimate was the broadest option with console, PC, cloud, day-one releases and EA Play. That historical description is why many searches still say “Ultimate vs. Core.”

The current U.S. storefront is the important update: the former Core web address now presents Game Pass Essential. Essential keeps the lower-tier positioning but lists a larger 50-plus-game catalog and five hours of cloud play per month. Do not treat Core as a current U.S. subscription you can newly purchase; use Essential for the present-day comparison.

Xbox has not established identical grandfathered terms for every former Core subscriber. If you had Core, review the offer and renewal terms shown in your Microsoft account instead of assuming your legacy benefits or billing will be unchanged.

How do Essential and Ultimate differ?

The core difference is scope. Essential covers the basic console use case, while Ultimate bundles the broadest game access and services across devices.

Decision point Essential Ultimate
U.S. regular monthly price $9.99/month $22.99/month
Included catalog 50+ games 500+ games
New releases on day one No Yes, subject to Xbox exclusions and terms
Online console multiplayer Included Included
Cloud play 5 hours per month 15 hours per month, with Xbox’s best streaming-quality and shortest-wait positioning
PC access Listed on the current storefront; availability depends on the individual game and device Console, PC and supported devices
Partner services Not listed as included EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics
Basic benefits Play Anywhere and Rewards In-game benefits and enhanced Rewards

Catalog counts are snapshots, not guarantees that a particular title will remain available. Xbox notes that the library can vary over time and by country, so check a game’s current listing before subscribing for one specific title.

What Essential provides

Essential is designed around the lower-cost console membership. It includes online console multiplayer, 50 or more games, Play Anywhere, Rewards and five hours of cloud play each month. The storefront also describes play on console, PC and supported handhelds, but the exact device and game availability should be checked title by title.

Essential does not include new releases on day one. If your main reason for subscribing is to play a newly launched first-party game immediately, this tier will not meet that requirement.

Its strongest case is straightforward: it combines a lower monthly price with paid online console multiplayer and an included library. That can suit someone who wants a selection of games to browse but does not need a very large catalog. The five-hour monthly cloud allowance is also a specific limit to consider; it is not an unlimited cloud-play plan.

What Ultimate adds

Ultimate includes everything needed for the broadest Xbox Game Pass experience: more than 500 games, day-one releases, console and PC access, supported-device play, online console multiplayer and cloud gaming. The current comparison page lists 15 cloud-play hours per month and positions Ultimate as offering Xbox’s best streaming quality and shortest wait times.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The plan also includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics, plus in-game benefits and enhanced Rewards. These extras matter only if you would use them; their presence alone does not make Ultimate the right choice for every console owner.

Ultimate’s day-one availability is a meaningful difference if you want to play eligible new releases as they arrive rather than buy them separately. It is not a promise that every new game is included: Xbox’s exclusions and subscription terms apply. If you are subscribing for one named release, check that title’s current listing and terms rather than relying only on the general day-one feature.

Do you need Game Pass to play online?

Not for free-to-play multiplayer games. Xbox’s current comparison page says online multiplayer for free-to-play titles is open to every Xbox player, so you do not need Essential or Ultimate for that specific use case.

A paid plan is still relevant when you play paid multiplayer games, want access to the included catalog, or need another benefit such as cloud gaming. Separate those needs before subscribing: paying for Game Pass solely to play a free-to-play game would add a cost without solving an access problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both Essential and Ultimate include online console multiplayer. If multiplayer access is your main reason for paying, compare the plans on the other features you will use—especially day-one access, the library, cloud hours and partner benefits—not on multiplayer alone.

Is Ultimate worth the extra monthly cost?

Ultimate costs $13 more per month than Essential at the current U.S. regular prices. The upgrade is worthwhile when you will actually use its additional access rather than simply valuing a larger number on the plan page.

Ultimate makes sense when you buy games at launch

Ultimate is the relevant tier for day-one releases. Essential excludes them, so a player who wants immediate access to new Xbox releases would otherwise need to purchase those games separately. Availability remains subject to Xbox’s exclusions and subscription terms.

Ultimate makes sense for multi-device households

Players who move between Xbox, PC and supported devices get more from Ultimate because the plan explicitly covers those platforms. Essential’s storefront also references PC and supported handheld play, but its title-level availability is less uniform; verify the individual game before relying on it.

Ultimate makes sense for regular cloud players

Ultimate lists 15 cloud-play hours per month compared with Essential’s five. It also receives Xbox’s best streaming-quality and shortest-wait positioning. Occasional cloud use may fit Essential, while frequent streaming makes the larger allowance and service tier more relevant.

Ultimate makes sense when you value the bundled services

EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics are included with Ultimate and are not listed on the current Essential page. If you already pay separately for comparable access, include that avoided cost in your decision. If you never use those services, they should not be treated as automatic savings.

When Essential is likely enough

Essential is a more straightforward choice if your routine is mostly on one Xbox console, you want online multiplayer for paid games, and you are content with the smaller included selection. It may also be a better fit if you only use cloud play occasionally and do not need the larger monthly allowance. You can choose based on those needs without treating Ultimate’s larger catalog as a requirement.

If your only online games are free-to-play titles, consider whether you need either paid tier at all. Xbox says those games’ online multiplayer is open to every player. In that case, subscribe only if the catalog, cloud play or another included benefit is useful to you.

What does Essential cost, and what did Core cost?

As checked in October 2026, the U.S. regular monthly price is $9.99 for Essential and $22.99 for Ultimate. Taxes, regional pricing, promotional offers and eligibility can change the amount you see at checkout.

At those regular monthly prices, Ultimate is $13 more for one month. If you kept the same plan for 12 months at those rates, the difference would be $156 over the year. That arithmetic is a comparison of the listed monthly prices, not a promise of a fixed annual subscription price; promotions, taxes and plan prices can change.

Core’s original 2023 launch price was $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year. That annual figure describes the historical Core offer, not a confirmed annual Essential price today. The current Essential storefront lists the monthly plan; do not assume the old annual rate remains available.

Xbox says promotional offers may be limited, region-specific or restricted to eligible members. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled, so review the renewal date and terms in your Microsoft account before accepting a trial or discounted offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you buy an Ultimate code or gift card?

An Xbox Game Pass Ultimate gift card or Game Pass Ultimate code can fund or redeem a subscription where the code’s region and terms allow it. A code does not change the differences between Ultimate and Essential, and digital versus physical format, regional redemption and availability vary by seller. Confirm those details before buying rather than assuming every code works on every account.

Before purchasing a code, check the exact product, region, redemption instructions and any seller-specific terms. A subscription code is a way to pay for or redeem access; it does not add features to Essential or make an Essential subscription equivalent to Ultimate. If you are unsure which tier you want, decide on the plan first, then compare the current purchase options for that tier.

How should you decide if you are replacing an old Core subscription?

Use your actual play habits, not the old plan name, as the decision rule.

  1. List the games you play most. Mark which are free-to-play, which are paid multiplayer games and which are new releases you want on launch day.
  2. Count the devices you use. Include Xbox consoles, a Windows PC and any supported handheld or cloud device. A multi-device routine points more strongly toward Ultimate.
  3. Estimate cloud use. Five monthly hours may cover occasional sessions; regular streaming makes Ultimate’s 15-hour allowance more useful.
  4. Check the catalog, not just the headline count. A 50-plus-game or 500-plus-game figure does not guarantee that your preferred title is included or will remain available in your country.
  5. Value partner services honestly. Count EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics only if you will use them.
  6. Review your current offer. Former Core members should inspect the price, renewal date and benefits displayed in their Microsoft account because legacy terms are not established as universal.

This checklist also helps separate “I want Game Pass” from “I need a specific Game Pass feature.” For example, if online access for free-to-play games is your only concern, Xbox says you can play those online without a paid plan. If you want access to a particular catalog game, first confirm it is currently included and available on your device. If day-one releases or a higher cloud allowance matter, compare those specific Ultimate features against the extra monthly price.

What are the main limitations to watch for?

  • Plan names can lag behind storefronts. Search results may still call the lower tier Core, but the current U.S. purchase page uses Essential.
  • Catalogs rotate. Counts are published totals at a point in time, and availability can change by date and country.
  • Day-one access has conditions. Ultimate lists day-one games, but Xbox exclusions and subscription terms still apply.
  • Cloud hours are allowances. Essential lists five hours per month and Ultimate 15; do not treat either figure as unlimited streaming.
  • Device support is title-specific. A plan may support a platform while an individual game is unavailable on that device.
  • Promotions are not universal. Introductory prices and eligibility can vary by region and account.
  • Auto-renewal can surprise you. Check cancellation and renewal settings if you only want one billing period.

These limits matter most when you are comparing plans for a specific use. A catalog total does not establish that a particular game is included today, and platform coverage does not guarantee that every title runs on every supported device. Likewise, the cloud-hour figures are monthly allowances, not a statement that cloud access is unlimited. Verify the current game listing, device support and account offer before making a purchase around one feature.

How we picked the recommendation

The recommendation uses the current U.S. plan pages checked in October 2026, prioritizing the reader’s stated need: online multiplayer, day-one access, catalog size, device coverage, cloud allowance and included partner services. Essential ranks first for cost-conscious console players because it covers the basic paid-multiplayer case at $9.99 per month. Ultimate ranks first for breadth because it combines the largest catalog, day-one games, multi-device access, expanded cloud play and bundled services at $22.99 per month.

Those conclusions are conditional rather than universal. Regional prices, taxes, promotions, catalog contents and account eligibility can change, so confirm the offer shown for your Microsoft account before subscribing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Essential exactly the same plan as the old Core subscription?

No. Essential occupies the same lower-tier role, but the current storefront lists a 50-plus-game catalog and five cloud-play hours, while Core launched with more than 25 games and no stated cloud allowance in its 2023 announcement. Former subscribers should check their individual account terms rather than assume a one-for-one legacy conversion.

Does the Game Pass catalog include every Xbox game?

No. The catalog is a selected, rotating library rather than a permanent list of every Xbox title. Availability can differ by country and change over time, so search for a specific game on the current Xbox listing before subscribing.

Can I get an annual Essential subscription at Core’s old annual price?

The historical Core launch offer was $59.99 per year, but the current Essential storefront confirms a $9.99 monthly price and does not establish that annual rate. Treat any annual option shown in your account as a separate, current offer that needs its own terms check.

Will a promotional Game Pass price be available to every account?

Not necessarily. Xbox says promotions can be limited, region-specific or restricted to eligible members, and subscriptions generally renew automatically unless canceled. Read the eligibility, duration and renewal price displayed before accepting an offer.

Do I need Game Pass to play online?

Not if you only play free-to-play multiplayer games: Xbox says their online multiplayer is open to every Xbox player. Essential and Ultimate both include online console multiplayer for other use cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Game Pass Ultimate include online multiplayer?

Yes. Ultimate includes online console multiplayer, as does Essential. If online access is your main need, compare the plans’ other features and prices before paying for Ultimate.

What replaced Xbox Game Pass Core?

The current U.S. storefront uses Xbox Game Pass Essential as the lower-cost comparison point. The former Core URL now displays Essential; check your Microsoft account for the specific terms available to a former Core subscriber.

Is Game Pass Ultimate worth it over Essential?

It can be if you will use Ultimate’s day-one releases, larger catalog, 15 monthly cloud-play hours, PC access or included EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. At the listed U.S. monthly prices, it costs $13 more per month. Essential is a better fit when the lower price and basic console use are the priority.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: For U.S. subscribers, compare Essential—not the discontinued Core name—with Ultimate. Essential costs $9.99 per month and suits players who mainly need online console multiplayer and a smaller catalog. Ultimate costs $22.99 and is the stronger choice for day-one releases, a larger library, PC and cloud access, or partner services you will actually use. If you only play free-to-play multiplayer games, Xbox says you can play online without either paid plan. Check your account’s current price and terms before subscribing.
