To redeem an Xbox digital-game deal, sign in to the Microsoft account that should own it, enter the 25-character code from the Xbox Store’s Redeem option, then install the claimed game on your console. Redemption and installation are separate: accepting the code assigns the entitlement to an account, but the game still has to download to the device. Check the account before confirming—a redeemed code cannot be transferred to a different Microsoft account.

How do you redeem a 25-character Xbox code on a console?
On Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, open the Store’s Redeem option, enter all 25 characters, and follow the confirmation prompts. Confirm the signed-in account is correct before completing the redemption.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that should own the game or receive the balance.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Select Store.
- Press the controller’s View button to open the Store side menu.
- Select Redeem.
- Enter the 25-character code, select Next, and follow the prompts.
- Read the confirmation carefully. If it identifies the expected game, content, or balance and the account is right, complete the redemption.
Xbox’s published guidance says to check the account first because a redeemed code cannot be moved to another account. If the console shows an unexpected item or account, do not confirm until you have resolved the mismatch.
At the confirmation stage, distinguish the code’s description from the next action. A successful game-code redemption claims the listed entitlement; it does not necessarily start the download. A gift-card redemption adds account value, which you can spend later in Microsoft Store. Check the displayed item before proceeding so that you do not mistake an account balance for a game purchase or an add-on for a full game.
The console route is useful when you are already signed in on the Xbox that will receive the content. It also makes it easier to move directly from a successful game redemption to the game’s Store listing or library entry. What is the difference between an Xbox gift card and a game code?

Microsoft says Microsoft and Xbox gift cards, download codes, and tokens work through a Microsoft account and can be used on Windows or Xbox. That does not mean every game code grants both a PC and console version. Look for the platform entitlement in the deal details before buying or redeeming.
For example, if you want a particular game, a gift card does not claim that title by itself: redeem the balance, then use it toward an eligible Microsoft Store purchase. Conversely, a code for a named game is not general spending credit that can be redirected to another title. If you are comparing a game deal with a gift card, compare the exact entitlement, any included extras, and the account and regional conditions rather than treating both as equivalent discounts.

Gift-card value may also be used toward Game Pass, but that is a subscription choice, not the same as owning an individual game. Check the current offer and subscription terms before using balance for a service. A game that is available through a subscription has a different access basis from a game code that grants the listed game to the account.
How do you install a game after redeeming it?
Once a game code has been accepted, go to the console’s game library or the game’s Store page and choose the available install option. The game must download to the console even though the purchase was digital; allow additional time and storage for updates.
- After redemption, open the area of the console that lists your games, or search for the game in Store.
- Select the game you claimed and choose the available Install option.
- Check the download queue or notifications for progress. Keep the console connected while the download and any required updates complete.
- When the console shows the game as ready, launch it. If it remains queued or paused, check the queue, available storage, and network connection.
Exact library labels and screen layouts can vary with the console’s software and interface, so use the game’s listing or library entry rather than relying on one menu path being identical on every device. Redemption itself does not guarantee that a game is installed or ready to play immediately.
Think of the process as two stages: the code establishes the account’s entitlement, and installation puts the game files on the console. A game can therefore be redeemed successfully but not yet appear as ready to launch. For a missing listing, first verify the account and what the code granted; for a game that is listed but not playable yet, check its download and update status.
Can you install remotely or preload a game?
Xbox documents remote installation and preloading for supported scenarios. These are optional ways to prepare a download, not substitutes for redeeming a code or confirming ownership. Availability depends on the game, device, and account; do not assume every title supports either feature. A remote install still needs the console to download the game, and a preload does not necessarily mean the game can be played before its release or any required access conditions are met.
Remote installation can be useful when you want the console to begin preparing a supported game without starting at the console itself. Preloading can prepare supported games in advance, but it is not a promise that every purchase can be downloaded early or launched before the applicable release and access conditions. Check whether the particular title and setup support the feature, and remember that available storage and a network connection are still needed.
What if a console bundle has no code?
Some Xbox bundles use Digital Direct, which delivers included digital content through the console setup process rather than a printed code. Xbox says the offer appears during setup; the person setting up the console can claim it, after which the content is attached to the first Microsoft account that redeems it and appears in My Games & Apps.

If the bundle offer was not claimed during setup, Xbox documents a later place to check: Settings > Account > Included with this Xbox. Review the account shown before claiming. If another account already claimed the offer, the content is tied to that account rather than being a transferable code.

Digital Direct is a reason not to assume that every bundle includes a card or printed 25-character key. During setup, review the included offer and decide which Microsoft account should claim it before selecting the claim option. This is especially important if more than one person uses the console: the included content is attached to the first account that redeems it, so it should be claimed by the account meant to receive it.
If you already completed setup and cannot find the bundled item, check the documented Included with this Xbox area and My Games & Apps. Also check whether the offer was previously claimed by another account. Searching for a missing printed code will not solve an offer that was delivered digitally during setup.
How should you compare Xbox digital-game deals?
Compare the entitlement and redemption conditions, not just the displayed price. Two offers that appear to be for the same game can differ in edition, extras, platform, region, or whether they provide a game at all.
- Included content: Is it the full game, a particular edition, an add-on, subscription time, or account balance? Identify what is and is not included.
- Platform entitlement: Does the offer cover Xbox console, Windows PC, or both? Look for a specific cross-platform entitlement such as Play Anywhere rather than assuming a console code also grants a PC copy.
- Account and region: Confirm that the code can be redeemed on the intended Microsoft account and in your market. The store catalog and offer availability can differ by region.
- Installation needs: Consider available storage and the download and update requirements. Remote installation or preloading is only an option where supported.
- Refund terms: Digital purchases are subject to Xbox’s Digital Game Purchase Refund Terms. Do not assume every digital game purchase is refundable; review the applicable terms and eligibility before buying.
Xbox also describes cloud gaming as an option for supported titles and circumstances when a player wants to start without waiting for an install. Treat it as an alternative, not a required redemption or installation step: availability depends on the title, device, account, and region, and it does not make every game available to stream.
A practical comparison is to write down what each offer actually delivers before looking at the price difference. A full-game code, an add-on, a balance card, and a period of subscription access are not four versions of the same product. If an edition includes extra content, confirm that it is content you want and that it applies to your platform. If a code is for Windows PC or a cross-platform entitlement, verify that the offer explicitly says so rather than inferring it from the game’s name.
Next, check whether the code can be redeemed by the Microsoft account and in the region where you plan to use it. Consider storage and any download or update requirements, too: a lower price does not eliminate the need to install the game. Finally, read the Digital Game Purchase Refund Terms for the relevant eligibility. Xbox does not promise that every digital purchase can be refunded, so do not make a purchase on the assumption that a change of mind will qualify.

Cloud gaming may be a separate route for supported titles when you want to start playing without waiting for an install. It is not a way to convert every game code into a stream, and it is not a required step after redemption. Confirm title, device, account, and regional availability before relying on streaming as an alternative.
Why is an Xbox game code not working or the game not showing up?
First distinguish a rejected code from a successful redemption that is not yet visible. Check the characters and account for a rejected code; for a missing game, verify what the code granted and check the account’s order or redemption history.

- Recheck the characters and enter the complete 25-character code. If you are unsure whether a character was read correctly, compare it with the original code rather than guessing.
- Confirm you are signed in to the intended Microsoft account and are redeeming the correct type of code.
- Check the offer’s region, platform, and other redemption conditions. A deal is not necessarily valid for every account or market.
- If the code still fails, use Microsoft’s code-redemption troubleshooting and error/status guidance. Do not publish or share the full code while seeking help.
Check that you are following the console Store route and have entered the full code, not a partial string or a different identifier from the offer. A mismatch between the code type and what you expect can also create confusion: a balance token will not claim a named game, and an add-on is not the full game. If the error persists after checking the entry and conditions, Microsoft’s redemption troubleshooting and error/status information is the appropriate next step.
The code was accepted, but the game is missing
- Check whether the code was for account balance, subscription time, an add-on, or the full game. A gift card adds value; it does not automatically add a particular game to the library.
- Verify that you are looking at the same Microsoft account used during redemption. Entitlements and balances are account-linked.
- Review the account’s order history or redemption history to confirm what was claimed. Xbox documents the account order-history area for reviewing redeemed codes.
- Search for the game in the library or Store and choose its install option if it has not been downloaded.
These checks separate three common situations: the code claimed something other than the full game, the game belongs to a different signed-in account, or the game is owned but has not yet been installed. If history shows the game entitlement on the expected account, look for its library entry or Store page and start the available install. If it shows account value instead, that balance must be spent on an eligible purchase before a particular game is added.
The bundle has no printed code
Check whether it uses Digital Direct. Look for the offer during setup or under Settings > Account > Included with this Xbox; also confirm which account claimed it, since the content is assigned to the first account that redeems the offer.

- The code description matches the intended game, edition, add-on, subscription, or account value.
- The platform and region conditions match the account and device you intend to use.
- You understand that a redeemed code cannot be transferred to another account.
- You have a way to install the game and enough available storage for its download and updates.
After confirmation, keep the purchase receipt and use the account’s order history if you need to verify what was redeemed. For bundle content, check Digital Direct rather than searching for a code that may not exist.
Once the account and entitlement are clear, the remaining steps are straightforward: redeem the code through Store, find the claimed game in the library or Store, install it, and wait for required downloads and updates.
