If a Microsoft game studio closes, that does not automatically remove a game you bought from your Xbox account. But a purchase is not a guarantee of perpetual downloads or replacement: a game’s sales, Game Pass availability, account entitlement and online services can each change independently. Check the specific game and how you accessed it rather than assuming that a studio closure determines its fate.
Will I lose an Xbox game I already bought?
A studio closing, by itself, is not an account-license revocation. The closure tells you that the developer has stopped operating; it does not prove that Xbox has removed an existing owner’s entitlement, installation or ability to play.
It is equally important not to turn past examples of continued access into a promise that every digital game will remain downloadable forever. Microsoft’s Services Agreement, effective September 30, 2026, says Microsoft or the owners of Digital Goods may remove them from services, and qualifies any obligation to provide re-downloads or replacements. The agreement also says that closing a Microsoft account can result in losing access to acquired products. Read the current Microsoft Services Agreement for the terms that apply; it is a contractual limitation, not evidence that a particular game has been removed.

What is the difference between a studio closure, a delisting and a Game Pass removal?
These are separate events, and one does not establish that the others have happened. A game can remain available to previous purchasers even after new digital sales stop, while a Game Pass removal can end subscription access without undoing a separate purchase.
| Event | What changes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| A development studio closes | The studio stops operating; the game’s development or support may be affected. | It does not, by itself, show that owners have lost their Xbox purchase. |
| A game is delisted | New digital purchases may no longer be available. | It does not necessarily remove the entitlement of someone who bought it earlier. |
| A game leaves Game Pass | Access supplied by the subscription ends under the catalog terms. | A download from the catalog is not a separate purchase or a permanent license. |
| A store stops selling games | New purchases through that storefront end. | It does not necessarily end access to prior purchases; the effect depends on the service and title. |
| A publisher shuts down online services | Server-dependent features may stop working. | A disc or local installation cannot keep the publisher’s servers running. |
| An account loses an entitlement | The account no longer has the purchase access it previously showed. | A studio closure alone does not explain or prove why that account issue occurred. |
Microsoft’s terms and the game’s publisher notices are more useful for a specific case than the studio’s name alone. A license change, subscription change, storefront closure or server shutdown needs to be checked on its own terms.
Does a Game Pass download count as owning the game?
No. Downloading a Game Pass title does not turn subscription access into an individual purchase. Xbox says its subscription catalog can vary by time, region, plan and platform; if a game leaves, a subscriber who wants to keep playing must have a separate qualifying purchase of the base game.
That distinction matters if you also own add-ons. Xbox’s subscription terms say that continued use of purchased add-ons for a game that leaves the catalog requires buying the base game separately. A prior download alone does not preserve the Game Pass license. Check the current catalog and terms for your region and plan rather than relying on an old listing or a game’s prior availability.

In 2022, Microsoft described a first-party retention practice in a response to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, but the statement allowed licensing and contracting exceptions. It is historical context, not a substitute for today’s subscription terms or a promise about a particular title.
Can I redownload a delisted Xbox game?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the title, platform, account and service. Xbox has said that buyers could continue to play and re-download previously purchased Xbox 360 games after the Xbox 360 Store stopped taking new purchases on July 29, 2024. That documented case does not create a universal guarantee for every game or storefront.
Forza Horizon 4 is a separate example. Playground Games announced on June 25, 2024 that licensing and partner agreements would take the game and its additional content off digital sale and remove it from Game Pass on December 15, 2024. The studio said existing owners could continue to download and play, and that physical copies would work. Its delisting announcement describes that title’s situation; it was not a studio-closure case, and its specific remedy for some Game Pass players with add-ons had eligibility conditions and an expiry.
Xbox’s Xbox 360 Store closure guidance likewise covered that storefront’s closure, not a general rule for all digital games. Whether a title is backward compatible is also title-dependent. A past ability to re-download a game is useful precedent, but Microsoft’s current agreement does not promise perpetual re-downloads or replacement in every case.

Will multiplayer still work if the studio closes?
Not necessarily. Online play can depend on servers operated or supported by a publisher, and that is distinct from whether you still own the game. Xbox’s guidance on the 360 Store closure said multiplayer would continue only while the publisher supported the servers.
Local or offline play may remain possible where the title supports it, but an installed copy cannot independently keep a publisher’s online service running. A studio closure report does not establish the current status of a particular game’s servers. Look for a current, title-specific notice from the publisher before assuming that multiplayer, online progression or other server-dependent features are available.
What did Microsoft’s studio closures in 2024 tell owners?
They established that studios closed, not that their games were automatically removed or became inaccessible. Contemporaneous reporting on May 9, 2024 identified Tango Gameworks, maker of Hi-Fi Rush, and Arkane Austin, associated with Prey and Redfall, among the Microsoft studio closures.

Those examples are evidence of studio closures only. They do not establish whether each game is listed in the Xbox store in October 2026, whether a particular account owns it, whether it was delisted, or whether its online services are operating. Store listings and server status can change, so check the relevant game’s current publisher and Xbox notices rather than treating a closure story as a catalog update.

What should I check if a purchased game has disappeared?
First determine whether you bought the game individually or only accessed it through Game Pass. Then check the Microsoft account and purchase record associated with the transaction; a game missing from one account’s library does not show that another account’s purchase was revoked.
- Confirm the access type. Check your order history or receipt to distinguish an individual purchase from a subscription download. If the title was only in Game Pass, review whether it remains in the catalog.
- Check the purchasing account. Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the purchase and review the owned-games or ready-to-install library and the relevant purchase records.
- Look for title-specific notices. Check the publisher’s announcements for delisting, licensing, server or platform-compatibility changes. A store search that no longer offers a game for sale does not alone show what happened to a prior entitlement.
- Contact Xbox support if the purchase entitlement appears absent. Have the order details available. Support can review the account issue, but contacting support is not a guarantee that a removed game can be restored.
Keeping a game installed or using extra storage can reduce the immediate need to download it again, but neither creates a license nor restores an unavailable service. A local copy is useful only to the extent the console, account and game still permit it to run.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I buy a disc instead?
A compatible disc can provide a different way to access some games, but it is not a universal preservation solution. The disc-capable Xbox Series X accepts compatible discs; the all-digital Series X and Xbox Series S do not have a disc drive.
Some backward-compatible Xbox One discs require a game download and normally must remain in the console to play. A disc also cannot restore publisher-run online services, guarantee compatibility, or supply a download that is no longer available. Check the specific game and console compatibility before relying on physical media.

Xbox has also described a limited disc-to-digital license feature for eligible Xbox One and Series X discs on supported devices in select markets. Eligibility can change, and the feature does not support original Xbox or Xbox 360 discs. It is not a universal way to convert every disc into a digital entitlement. See Microsoft’s Xbox Series X console information and title-specific guidance for applicable details.
Does a studio closure mean I get a refund?
No automatic refund follows from the closure of a developer. Microsoft’s current general terms describe purchases as final and non-refundable unless applicable law or a specific offer provides otherwise, while reserving discretion to issue refunds or credits.
Whether a refund is available depends on the applicable purchase, offer, support route and local consumer rights. Check the order and current terms for your region; do not assume either that a closure guarantees a refund or that no exception can apply.
What should Xbox owners take away?
A Microsoft studio closing does not, by itself, delete a game that you individually purchased. The practical risk depends on what you own, the account and platform involved, the game’s current distribution and the availability of any online service. Delisting, Game Pass departure and server shutdown are separate events, and examples of continued access after earlier closures are not a promise of permanent downloads. For a particular title, verify the purchase record and current publisher notices before drawing a conclusion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a publisher still distribute a game after its original licensing agreement ends?
A historical Xbox One publisher agreement permitted Microsoft to redistribute final content to previous purchasers after a publisher distribution license ended, while also identifying circumstances in which content could be disabled. That agreement is context about one publisher arrangement, not a universal consumer guarantee.
Were Hi-Fi Rush, Prey and Redfall removed when their studios closed?
The May 2024 closure report identified studios associated with those games; it did not establish that the titles were delisted or inaccessible. A studio-closure report is not a current store-listing or server-status notice.
Can closing my Microsoft account affect games I acquired?
Yes. Microsoft’s Services Agreement warns that closing an account can cause loss of access to acquired products. Review account consequences before closing the account tied to your purchases.
