Neither service is universally better. Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming if you want a console-style catalog included with Game Pass, Xbox-console support, and one subscription that covers cloud play and other benefits. Choose GeForce NOW if you already own supported PC games, want to use several PC storefronts, or care most about the highest published resolution and frame-rate ceilings. Your country, exact games, device, internet latency, and total monthly cost can reverse the decision.

This comparison explains the different library models, current plan structures, image-quality limits, device support, setup requirements, and the checks to make before you subscribe.

What is the fundamental difference between Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW?

Xbox Cloud Gaming is primarily a subscription catalog: you stream games that Microsoft has made available through a cloud-supported Game Pass plan. GeForce NOW is primarily a remote gaming PC: you connect supported game-store accounts and stream PC games you already own, with some access for supported PC Game Pass and Microsoft Store titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction affects almost every buying decision. With Xbox, the question is usually whether a desired title is in the current Game Pass cloud catalog. With GeForce NOW, you must check both whether the game is supported and whether you own it in a connected store (or have an eligible PC Game Pass entitlement).

How the two library models work

Service What your subscription mainly provides What you still need to check
Xbox Cloud Gaming A managed cloud catalog through Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate. Whether the game is in the current catalog, cloud-enabled, available in your country, and supported on your device.
GeForce NOW Access to NVIDIA cloud PCs and a launcher for supported games in connected stores. Ownership in Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, Microsoft Store, or another supported storefront; publisher opt-in; and edition-specific support.

Game availability changes. A game can leave a subscription catalog, lose cloud eligibility, or be unavailable in a particular market even when the service itself is offered there.

Is Xbox Cloud Gaming included with Game Pass?

Yes. Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide says Xbox Cloud Gaming is included with Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. The plan names and prices are market-dependent, so confirm the offer shown for your billing country before paying.

Game Pass tier Cloud-library description in Xbox’s December 2025 guide Other stated benefits Price information supplied
Essential More than 50 games Game Pass access and cloud gaming As low as $10 per month; the figure is a regional starting price, not a universal worldwide rate.
Premium More than 200 games Game Pass access and cloud gaming $14.99 per month in the cited US-facing description.
Ultimate More than 400 games Day-one new titles, online console multiplayer, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, and cloud gaming The cited guide does not state one universal price; check the live offer for your market.

“More than” describes the catalog size at the time of the guide, not a permanent minimum. The catalog is dynamic, and individual titles can have separate age, region, or cloud-play restrictions.

Do I need to buy games for GeForce NOW?

Usually, yes. NVIDIA describes GeForce NOW as streaming games from connected game-store accounts, so the GeForce NOW membership normally does not replace a purchase on Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, or another supported store. NVIDIA also says that active PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate members can play released games supported by GeForce NOW, but support is title by title.

What you should verify before subscribing

  1. Search GeForce NOW for the exact game and edition, including whether a DLC-heavy or remastered edition is listed separately.
  2. Identify the store version you own. A Steam license does not automatically grant the Epic Games Store version, and a console purchase generally is not the same as a PC-store license.
  3. Check whether the publisher has enabled the title for GeForce NOW in your country.
  4. If you plan to use PC Game Pass, confirm that the game is both included in your active entitlement and supported on GeForce NOW.

NVIDIA’s current FAQ describes a library of more than 4,500 games, while its US marketplace displays access ranges from roughly 2,000+ to 4,000+ titles by offer. Those figures are not a promise that every listed game is included in a membership or playable without ownership.

How much do the services cost?

The services charge for different things, so comparing the monthly prices alone is misleading. Xbox bundles cloud access with a game catalog. GeForce NOW charges for streaming capacity while you may also need to buy the games.

For a household starting with no PC-game library, Xbox can be cheaper in the short term because the subscription itself supplies a playable catalog. For someone who already owns a large supported PC library, GeForce NOW can avoid repurchasing those games. Add the cost of any games you would need to buy, then compare the total over the period you expect to use the service.

Which service has better 4K or 120-fps streaming?

On published technical ceilings, GeForce NOW has the stronger high-end specification. NVIDIA says GeForce NOW Ultimate members receive first access to RTX 5080-based virtual gaming rigs, with streaming up to 5K at 120 frames per second or 1080p at 360 frames per second in competitive gaming mode. Those are maximums for the appropriate plan, display, game, mode, and network—not a guarantee that every title will render at those settings.

Xbox’s November 25, 2025 update says selected Xbox Cloud Gaming titles support user-selected resolution up to 1440p for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. The announcement does not establish a universal Xbox frame-rate target or promise 4K streaming across the catalog. Treat 1440p as title- and rollout-dependent.

Performance question Xbox Cloud Gaming GeForce NOW
Highest cited resolution Up to 1440p for selected titles and Ultimate subscribers in the November 2025 update. Up to 5K on Ultimate RTX 5080 rigs, subject to game, mode, display, and network conditions.
Highest cited frame rate No universal FPS figure in the cited Xbox update. Up to 120 FPS at 5K or 360 FPS at 1080p in competitive gaming mode on Ultimate RTX 5080 rigs.
Graphics hardware Managed Xbox cloud hardware; the cited material does not specify one universal GPU tier. RTX-powered cloud PCs; Ultimate’s cited ceiling uses RTX 5080 virtual rigs.
What you experience in practice Varies by title, region, device, and connection. Varies by title, data-center load, plan, device, and connection.

A 2024 paper from the IFIP Networking conference found that GeForce NOW adapts streaming throughput to the requested resolution and frame rate, while Xbox Cloud Gaming maintained comparatively constant throughput with game-dependent frame rates. That is useful technical context, not a service-level guarantee or a substitute for testing your own route to the service.

What internet connection does each service require?

Network quality can matter more than the advertised hardware. NVIDIA recommends at least 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS, 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS, and latency below 80 milliseconds to an NVIDIA data center. NVIDIA also recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi when wired Ethernet is not practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox’s cited guide requires a stable connection but does not publish one universal latency target. In either service, bandwidth alone is insufficient: packet loss, jitter, wireless interference, and a long route to the nearest data center can cause blur, input delay, or disconnections.

Prepare your network

  1. Run a speed and latency test from the same room and device you will use for gaming; a test on a wired desktop may not represent a phone or TV on Wi-Fi.
  2. Prefer Ethernet for a console, TV, or docked handheld. If you use Wi-Fi, select the 5 GHz band and avoid placing the router behind a television or inside a cabinet.
  3. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and 4K video uploads while playing.
  4. Choose the nearest available service region or data center when the app offers that setting.
  5. Start at 1080p/60, then raise resolution or frame rate only after the stream remains stable for a full session.

Can I play on my phone, TV, or Steam Deck?

Both services reach more than a traditional console, but their supported-device lists are not identical and availability varies by country.

Device category Xbox Cloud Gaming GeForce NOW Practical consideration
Xbox consoles Xbox One and later consoles are listed by Xbox. Not a replacement for native Xbox-console access. Choose Xbox when console integration is central.
Windows PC Windows 10 version 20H2 and later are listed. Supported through the GeForce NOW app or browser. A PC can use either service; library ownership becomes the key difference.
Mac macOS 14.1.2 and later are listed. Mac is listed in NVIDIA’s FAQ. Check the current app requirements before installing.
Chromebook and browser ChromeOS 85 and later, plus supported browsers. Chromebook and browser access are listed. Browser support does not remove game, region, or controller restrictions.
Android and iPhone/iPad Android 12+ and browser-based mobile access are listed. Android, iPhone, and iPad are listed. Use a controller for most console-style games; touch controls are game-specific.
Smart TV and streaming hardware Supported TVs are listed by Xbox. SHIELD TV and selected Samsung and LG TVs are listed. TV model, firmware, app availability, and country determine whether the app appears.
Steam Deck and other handhelds Selected handhelds and Steam Deck beta support are listed. Steam Deck is listed, along with selected handheld and VR scenarios. Expect extra setup and possible control-mapping work on handhelds.
Linux and VR Not listed as a general native target in the cited Xbox guide. Linux PC and VR headsets are listed by NVIDIA. GeForce NOW has the broader explicitly stated Linux/VR reach.

Xbox reported support in 29 countries in its December 2025 guide and said expansion was ongoing. GeForce NOW availability can come through NVIDIA or Alliance partners, so the app and plan shown in your country may differ from the US marketplace.

How do I set up Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Use these steps when your priority is the Game Pass catalog and Xbox-style access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that your Microsoft account is in a country where cloud gaming is offered and that your selected Game Pass tier includes it.
  2. Open the Xbox app on a supported Windows device, the supported browser experience, or the Xbox Cloud Gaming app path available for your device.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account holding the subscription.
  4. Connect a supported controller, such as an Xbox Wireless Controller, by USB or Bluetooth. Some games expose touch controls on compatible mobile devices, but controller support is more consistent.
  5. Open the cloud-gaming section, search for the exact title, and read its device and input requirements.
  6. Start at the service’s default quality. If the image breaks up, stop other traffic and move closer to the router before changing game settings.

On an Xbox console, cloud gaming can be useful for trying a title before installing it, but cloud availability and installed-game licensing are separate checks.

How do I set up GeForce NOW?

GeForce NOW is best approached as a compatibility checklist rather than a catalog you can assume is included.

  1. Create or sign in to a GeForce NOW account and select the plan appropriate for your desired session length and performance.
  2. Install the current app for Windows, macOS, Chromebook, Android, SHIELD TV, or another supported platform, or use the supported browser route.
  3. Open the service’s settings and connect the game-store accounts where your games are held.
  4. Search for each game you intend to play. Confirm the supported store version, region, and whether the title requires a particular launcher.
  5. Launch the game. The first run may ask you to sign in to the connected store again; complete that authentication inside the streamed session.
  6. Set streaming quality to match your connection. NVIDIA’s reference points are 25 Mbps for 1080p/60 and 45 Mbps for 4K/120, with less than 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center.

Account linking does not transfer ownership between stores. If a game appears in search but the connected account lacks the required license, the session may stop at a purchase or entitlement screen.

Which service is better for different kinds of players?

Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming when…

  • You want a catalog included in one subscription rather than buying each PC game.
  • You own an Xbox console or want Xbox account, controller, and Game Pass integration.
  • You play across a TV, phone, browser, and console and value a consistent console-style interface.
  • You want Game Pass extras such as day-one Ultimate titles, online console multiplayer, EA Play, or Ubisoft+ Classics.
  • Your favorite games are in the current Xbox cloud catalog and you do not need a 4K/120 or 360-FPS ceiling.

Choose GeForce NOW when…

  • You already own supported Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, or Microsoft Store PC games.
  • You want the PC versions of games and do not want to repurchase a library for a console ecosystem.
  • You use a high-refresh monitor and can benefit from NVIDIA’s published 5K/120 or 1080p/360 Ultimate ceilings.
  • You need an explicitly listed Linux PC, VR-headset, or broad PC-store streaming option.
  • You are willing to verify support title by title and manage separate store accounts.

Use both when the libraries complement each other

A mixed setup can be rational: use Game Pass for included games and Xbox-console access, then use GeForce NOW for owned PC titles that benefit from higher settings or a high-refresh display. Compare the combined subscriptions with the number of months you actually play; paying for two services year-round is not automatically better value.

What commonly goes wrong, and how can you fix it?

The game is missing

On Xbox, it may have left Game Pass, lack cloud support, or be unavailable in your region. On GeForce NOW, the publisher may not have opted in, the store edition may differ, or your account may not own the PC version. Search the exact title in the service immediately before subscribing.

The stream looks blurry

Reduce the requested resolution or frame rate, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet, stop competing traffic, and check for packet loss rather than only download speed. A display cannot restore detail that was lost in transit.

Controls feel delayed

Measure latency to the service’s data center, move to a closer region if possible, and avoid Bluetooth interference near the router and controller. A fast local connection can still feel slow when the route to the cloud is long.

The app is unavailable on a TV or handheld

Check the exact model, operating-system version, country store, and current app listing. “Supported TVs” and “selected handhelds” do not mean every model in those categories is eligible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A linked GeForce NOW account asks me to buy the game

Verify that you linked the store where you purchased it and that the license is for PC, not console. Some games use separate publisher accounts or editions, and a PC Game Pass entitlement only works when that title is supported and currently released for GeForce NOW.

What controller should you use?

An Xbox Wireless Controller is a practical choice for either service when your phone, TV, Mac, or handheld lacks a comfortable gamepad. NVIDIA’s system requirements explicitly list Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers as supported gamepads. Pair it over Bluetooth where supported or use USB for the most predictable connection, then check the device’s button mapping before launching a game.

Keyboard and mouse support depends on the game and client. If you are buying a GeForce NOW plan for competitive PC games, verify that the specific device and title accept your preferred input before assuming the console-style controller experience will translate.

What should you check before paying?

  1. Country: Confirm that the service, plan, desired game, and device are all available in your billing and playing location.
  2. Library: Write down five to ten games you actually intend to play and check each one, rather than comparing headline catalog totals.
  3. Ownership: For GeForce NOW, identify the store license or eligible PC Game Pass entitlement for every target game.
  4. Performance: Check your route to the relevant data center and begin with a 1080p/60 test session.
  5. Device: Verify operating-system versions, TV model support, browser compatibility, and controller pairing.
  6. Total cost: Include the subscription, any game purchases, optional annual billing, and a second service if you need both catalogs.
  7. Exit plan: Review renewal terms and cancel before the next billing date if you are testing the service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Xbox Cloud Gaming without an Xbox console?

Yes. Xbox lists Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, browsers, Android devices, supported TVs, and selected handhelds in addition to Xbox consoles. You still need a supported Game Pass tier, a compatible country and device, and a stable connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a game bought on Xbox work on GeForce NOW?

Not automatically. GeForce NOW generally requires a supported PC-store entitlement, while an Xbox-console purchase is a different license unless the title and account arrangement explicitly provide PC access through a supported Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass path.

Is GeForce NOW’s 5K streaming available on every monitor?

No. The 5K/120 figure applies to Ultimate RTX 5080 rigs and requires a compatible display, game, client mode, and network. A 1080p or 1440p monitor cannot display 5K output, and individual games may have lower frame-rate limits.

Will cloud gaming use a lot of mobile data?

It can. Higher resolutions and frame rates require more sustained bandwidth, and neither service’s cited guide gives one universal data-per-hour figure. If you use cellular data, set a lower resolution, monitor your carrier allowance, and prefer Wi-Fi for long sessions.

Can I move my saves between Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW?

Only when the game itself supports a shared account or cross-save system. Xbox cloud sessions use the Xbox ecosystem, while GeForce NOW launches the PC-store version; save compatibility is determined by that game’s account and platform support, not by the streaming services.
