GeForce NOW is the more direct Steam Deck option because NVIDIA lists a Steam Deck app. Xbox Cloud Gaming also works, but Microsoft’s Steam Deck method uses a Microsoft Edge shortcut created in desktop mode. That route depends on a community-maintained Edge Flatpak, which Microsoft says it does not actively maintain or officially support on SteamOS.
The better choice depends less on a universal winner than on your games and accounts. Xbox Cloud Gaming is tied to eligible Game Pass plans and selected owned or purchased games. GeForce NOW links supported PC game-store accounts so you can stream eligible games you already own, as well as supported free-to-play titles. Both services require a stable connection, and neither promises access to every game in your library.
Which service is easier to set up on a Steam Deck?
GeForce NOW has the cleaner native-app path. Xbox Cloud Gaming requires more manual work in SteamOS desktop mode because Microsoft’s instructions turn Edge into a non-Steam shortcut.
| Setup factor | Xbox Cloud Gaming | GeForce NOW |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck route | Install Microsoft Edge in desktop mode, add it to Steam, grant controller-related filesystem access, and configure an Xbox Cloud Gaming shortcut. | NVIDIA lists a Steam Deck app; use NVIDIA’s current Steam Deck installation guidance for the supported package and features. |
| Software support caveat | Microsoft says the Edge Flatpak is maintained by community contributors and is not actively maintained or officially supported by Microsoft on SteamOS. | The service is presented by NVIDIA as a supported app for gaming handhelds including Steam Deck. |
| Extra setup equipment | Microsoft recommends having a mouse and keyboard available, although the Deck’s touch keyboard and trackpads can be used. | A gamepad is recommended; the Deck’s integrated controls can serve that role. |
How do I set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck?
Microsoft’s documented approach is a browser shortcut rather than a dedicated Xbox Cloud Gaming application for SteamOS.

- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)

- Switch to Desktop Mode. Open the Steam Deck power menu and choose Desktop Mode.
- Open Discover. In the Discover software center, search for Microsoft Edge and install the Edge Flatpak.
- Add Edge to Steam. In desktop mode, open Steam, choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library, select Microsoft Edge, and add it.
- Allow controller access. Microsoft’s Steam Deck instructions require granting the Edge Flatpak filesystem access to
/run/udev. That permission lets the browser shortcut communicate with the Deck’s controls. - Configure the shortcut. Open the Edge shortcut’s properties in Steam and apply the launch configuration from Microsoft’s “Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge with Steam Deck” guide. The shortcut should open the Xbox Cloud Gaming web experience rather than a general browser window.
- Return to Gaming Mode and test. Launch the shortcut from the regular Steam interface, sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the eligible plan or game, and test a title before changing additional controller settings.
Microsoft specifically cautions that it does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official Microsoft Edge support on SteamOS at this time. That means an Edge update, SteamOS update, or community-package change can require repeating part of the setup. Keep the Microsoft guide available when troubleshooting rather than assuming the shortcut will remain unchanged forever.
How do I get started with GeForce NOW on Steam Deck?
NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW download information lists Steam Deck among supported gaming handheld devices. Because NVIDIA can change the package and installation flow, use its current Steam Deck guide rather than relying on an old community shortcut.
- Open NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW download page in desktop mode. Select the Steam Deck or gaming-handheld option shown for your current software version.
- Install the listed Deck app or package. Follow the current NVIDIA instructions exactly; package names and SteamOS compatibility details can change.
- Launch GeForce NOW and sign in. Use the NVIDIA account associated with your membership.
- Connect your game-store accounts. GeForce NOW uses linked stores such as the accounts where your supported PC games are owned. Linking an account does not make every title in that account playable through the service.
- Choose a supported game. Search the GeForce NOW catalog and confirm that the title is supported for the store account you linked before expecting it to launch.
- Test the Deck controls and connection. NVIDIA recommends a gamepad, but the built-in controls are the obvious first test on a Steam Deck.
The exact app capabilities can change. NVIDIA announced on May 29, 2025 that its native Steam Deck app could stream at up to 4K at 60 frames per second when the Deck was connected to a TV, with HDR10, DLSS 4, and Reflex on supported titles. That announcement describes a capability under the stated conditions; it does not mean the built-in Deck display is a 4K panel or that every game supports all of those features.

How do Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW provide access to games?
Xbox Cloud Gaming is primarily a subscription-and-catalog service, while GeForce NOW is primarily a supported-game streaming layer for PC stores you already use. In both cases, eligibility is title-specific.
| Access question | Xbox Cloud Gaming | GeForce NOW |
|---|---|---|
| What account is central? | Your Microsoft/Xbox account and an eligible Game Pass plan, with selected owned or purchased games also available when they are cloud playable. | Your NVIDIA account plus connected game-store accounts containing supported titles. |
| Are owned games included automatically? | No. Xbox says only selected owned or purchased games can be streamed, and cloud availability varies by title, region, plan, and platform. | No. A game must be supported by GeForce NOW and by the connected store/account combination. |
| Are free-to-play games possible? | Availability depends on Xbox’s current cloud catalog and eligibility rules. | Yes, NVIDIA describes support for selected free-to-play games in addition to supported games you own. |
| Does the entire library become streamable? | No. | No. |
What does Xbox Cloud Gaming include?
Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide described cloud gaming as included with Essential, Premium, and Ultimate plans. The same guide said Essential included more than 50 games, Premium included more than 200 games across console, PC, and supported devices, and Ultimate included more than 400 games with additional benefits.
Those figures describe the guide published on that date, not a permanent catalog guarantee. Xbox’s cloud service page says title counts, features, and availability can change with time, region, plan, and platform. Before subscribing, search for the specific games you intend to play and check that their entries show cloud eligibility for your region and plan.
What does GeForce NOW include?
GeForce NOW does not function as a universal remote version of Steam, Epic, or another PC store. It provides cloud hardware for games NVIDIA supports, while your connected store account supplies ownership or access. You may therefore see a game in your PC library that cannot launch through GeForce NOW because the title, edition, region, or store integration is unsupported.
This model can be attractive if you already own compatible PC games and want to avoid buying them again for a separate console catalog. It also means that a subscription alone cannot resolve a store-support limitation; the title has to appear as supported for the account you plan to use.

What do the Xbox Game Pass plans cost, and what should a Steam Deck owner verify?
Xbox’s December 19, 2025 Xbox Wire guide quoted Essential at $10 per month and Premium at $14.99 per month. Prices, plan names, benefits, and regional availability are volatile, so treat those as dated guide figures rather than current prices.
| Plan in the Dec. 19, 2025 guide | Cloud and catalog description in that guide | Quoted monthly price in that guide |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Cloud gaming included; more than 50 games described. | $10 per month. |
| Premium | Cloud gaming included; more than 200 games across console, PC, and supported devices described. | $14.99 per month. |
| Ultimate | Cloud gaming included; more than 400 games and additional benefits described. | Not stated in the Dec. 19, 2025 Xbox Wire guide. |
Check the live Xbox plan page for your country before paying. Confirm four things: the plan currently includes cloud play, the games you want are in the cloud catalog, your region is supported, and any owned-game streaming feature applies to the exact title and platform edition you have.
GeForce NOW membership prices and limits are likewise subject to change. The practical check is different: verify the games you own, the store they belong to, the supported edition, and the session or quality limits attached to the current membership tier.

Xbox publishes a lower minimum speed, while NVIDIA publishes several handheld targets tied to resolution and frame rate. These are provider requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular home network will feel responsive.
| Service guidance | Published target | What it means on a Steam Deck |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | At least 10 Mbps; Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. | 10 Mbps is a minimum starting point, not a promise of stable image quality during congestion or interference. |
| GeForce NOW handheld HD | 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 frames per second. | A reasonable target for a 60-FPS stream at the Deck’s native-class resolution. |
| GeForce NOW handheld FHD | 25 Mbps for Full HD at 60 frames per second. | Requires more bandwidth if you are targeting a sharper external display mode or higher stream resolution. |
| GeForce NOW handheld QHD | 35 Mbps for QHD at 90 or 120 frames per second. | Applies to the higher-resolution, high-refresh target, not to every Deck screen or game. |
| GeForce NOW latency | Under 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center is recommended. | Latency to the service location matters more than the speed shown by a broadband plan alone. |
Which Wi-Fi setup is best?
Both providers point toward 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Use a 5 GHz network when the Deck is close enough to the router for a strong signal, avoid crowded channels when possible, and pause large downloads or uploads during a session. Wired Ethernet is NVIDIA’s preferred option where a dock or adapter makes it practical.
Bandwidth is only one part of cloud-play quality. A connection can exceed the published Mbps target and still feel poor if latency spikes, packets are lost, or the wireless link repeatedly changes modulation. If a game looks sharp but controls feel delayed, investigate latency and interference before increasing stream resolution.
Which service delivers better image quality and performance?
Neither provider’s published minimum should be treated as a head-to-head benchmark. Xbox gives a minimum and a best-quality device note, while NVIDIA separates HD, Full HD, and QHD targets and publishes a latency recommendation.
When GeForce NOW has the technical advantage
GeForce NOW exposes the more explicit quality ladder for handhelds: 15 Mbps for HD at up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for Full HD at 60 FPS, and 35 Mbps for QHD at 90 or 120 FPS. NVIDIA also recommends latency below 80 ms and supports wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Those specifications make it easier to plan around a target resolution and refresh rate.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
The May 2025 native-app announcement adds a TV-connected scenario: up to 4K at 60 FPS with HDR10, DLSS 4, and Reflex on supported titles. The conditions matter. A Steam Deck’s integrated display does not become a 4K panel, and the listed features depend on the title and stream path.
When Xbox Cloud Gaming is the practical choice
Xbox’s 10 Mbps minimum and browser route can be sufficient when the games you want are in the Xbox cloud catalog and you already value the Game Pass ecosystem. The service can also expose selected owned or purchased games outside the subscription catalog when Xbox marks them cloud playable. That convenience may outweigh the extra Edge setup for someone whose priority is Xbox access rather than PC-store ownership.
Do I need a separate controller?
No. A Steam Deck already has integrated controls, so a second controller is optional for both services. Xbox says cloud play supports a variety of controllers, and NVIDIA recommends a gamepad; the Deck’s built-in gamepad controls satisfy the basic need.

Some GeForce NOW games may also need a connected controller or a wireless keyboard and mouse, especially when their PC interface does not translate neatly to gamepad input.
Which service should you choose for your Steam Deck?
Choose based on the games and accounts you already have, then use network quality and setup effort as tie-breakers.
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming when:
- Your main games are in the current Xbox cloud catalog or are among Xbox’s selected cloud-playable owned titles.
- You already plan to pay for an eligible Game Pass plan and want its broader console, PC, and supported-device benefits.
- You prefer a subscription catalog over checking every PC-store title individually.
- You can accept a browser shortcut and the limitations of the community-maintained Edge Flatpak on SteamOS.
Choose GeForce NOW when:
- You own supported PC games in connected stores and want to stream those purchases rather than rely on an Xbox catalog.
- You want the more direct Steam Deck app route listed by NVIDIA.
- You can meet a higher quality target, such as 25 Mbps for Full HD at 60 FPS or 35 Mbps for QHD at 90/120 FPS, with latency below NVIDIA’s recommended 80 ms.
- You want the possibility of the announced TV-connected 4K/60, HDR10, DLSS 4, or Reflex features where the title and setup support them.
Use both when your libraries are complementary
These services do not have to be mutually exclusive. Xbox Cloud Gaming can cover Game Pass and selected Xbox-owned cloud titles, while GeForce NOW can cover supported PC games already purchased in connected stores. The sensible order is to make a list of ten games you actually intend to play, check each service’s current eligibility, and only then decide whether one subscription or both justify the cost.
What should you check before starting a long cloud-gaming session?
- Verify title eligibility. Search the current Xbox cloud catalog or GeForce NOW supported-game list instead of assuming a store logo means the game will stream.
- Confirm the account and edition. The title must be attached to the correct Microsoft account or connected PC store, and the supported edition may differ from another version you own.
- Measure the actual connection. Compare your connection with Xbox’s 10 Mbps minimum or NVIDIA’s 15/25/35 Mbps handheld targets, then watch for latency spikes rather than speed alone.
- Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Move closer to the router, reduce competing traffic, and use wired networking through a dock or adapter when available.
- Test controls in one game. Confirm that the Deck’s buttons, sticks, triggers, and touchpads are recognized before changing global layouts.
- Keep the fallback path in mind. For Xbox, an Edge or SteamOS update may affect the shortcut because Microsoft does not officially support that Edge package on SteamOS.
How do you troubleshoot common Steam Deck problems?
The Xbox shortcut opens a normal browser page
Recheck the Edge shortcut’s Steam properties against Microsoft’s current Steam Deck instructions. The shortcut needs the Xbox Cloud Gaming launch configuration, not merely the Edge executable. If the package changed after an update, recreate the non-Steam shortcut and repeat the required permission step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteXbox Cloud Gaming launches but the controls do not work
Confirm that the Edge Flatpak has access to /run/udev, then restart the shortcut after changing the permission. A mouse and keyboard can help during setup, while the Deck’s touch keyboard and trackpads remain available if you are working without accessories.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
GeForce NOW cannot find a game I own
Ownership alone is not enough. Check that the game is supported by GeForce NOW, that the correct store account is linked, and that the specific edition and region are eligible. If the title is absent from the supported catalog, changing Steam Deck controls or reinstalling the app will not add support.
The picture is clear but input feels delayed
Check latency to the provider’s data center, not only download speed. Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet, stop competing traffic, and try a lower stream target; a lower resolution or frame-rate target can be more playable than a sharp stream with unstable latency.
The stream repeatedly drops quality
Look for wireless interference, distance from the router, and simultaneous uploads. Xbox’s 10 Mbps figure and NVIDIA’s 15/25/35 Mbps figures describe throughput targets under their stated conditions; they do not account for every household’s congestion or packet loss.

Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide said cloud-gaming hours had increased 45% compared with the same period a year earlier. That is an Xbox-reported year-over-year usage statistic tied to its rollout and audience growth, not a performance comparison with GeForce NOW and not evidence that one service will run better on an individual Deck.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does GeForce NOW’s 4K claim apply to the Steam Deck’s built-in screen?
No. NVIDIA’s May 29, 2025 announcement described up to 4K at 60 frames per second when the Deck is connected to a TV. It also tied HDR10, DLSS 4, and Reflex to supported titles, so the statement should not be read as a specification for the Deck’s integrated display.
Why can a game be available in my PC store but unavailable in GeForce NOW?
GeForce NOW requires support for the title, the connected store, and the relevant account or edition. Store ownership by itself does not grant cloud compatibility, so check the service’s supported-game entry before troubleshooting the Steam Deck.
Can I use Xbox Cloud Gaming if I only bought one game?
Possibly, but only when Xbox identifies that owned or purchased title as cloud playable in your region, plan, and platform context. Xbox does not make every purchased game available through cloud streaming, so verify the individual title rather than assuming a purchase unlocks the whole library.

What happens if the Edge Flatpak changes after I set up Xbox Cloud Gaming?
The shortcut can require maintenance because Microsoft says the package is community maintained and not officially supported on SteamOS. Recheck Microsoft’s current Steam Deck instructions, recreate the non-Steam shortcut if necessary, and repeat the documented controller-permission step.
