If Xbox Cloud Gaming will not start from Xbox Insider Hub, treat it as a layered Windows launch problem rather than assuming the Hub itself is broken. Fully quit the Hub, sign out and back in with the same Microsoft account in Windows, Xbox and Microsoft Store, restart the PC, and update the Xbox app, Gaming Services, Game Bar and Store apps. Then test Cloud Gaming in a supported browser separately from the Xbox app. The result tells you whether the failing layer is the preview app, account state, Windows gaming components, browser path, controller or an Xbox-side service issue.
This order starts with reversible checks and preserves useful evidence. Preview software can introduce regressions, so record the exact build and error before changing enrollment or uninstalling components.
What exactly is failing?
Write down the symptom before changing anything. Different symptoms point to different layers, and a missing preview is not the same failure as a game that launches without accepting input.
| Observed symptom | What it may indicate | First useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Insider Hub will not open | Hub process, Store installation, sign-in or Windows app state | Quit the background process, then sign out and restart Windows |
| Hub opens but the preview or Cloud Gaming entry is missing | Wrong Microsoft account, delayed enrollment state or changed preview naming | Compare the account shown in Hub with the account used in Microsoft Store |
| Xbox app opens but the Cloud Gaming button does nothing | Xbox app, Gaming Services, preview build or cached app state | Update the Windows gaming stack and compare with browser Cloud Gaming |
| Launch starts and hangs at loading or sign-in | Authentication, service availability, app version or network path | Retry in a supported browser with the same account |
| Game starts but the controller is ignored | USB/Bluetooth pairing, browser permission or input compatibility | Test a known Xbox-compatible controller independently |
| A specific error code appears | A more narrowly defined account, service or component fault | Save the code exactly before attempting repairs |
Do not label the incident an outage, account ban or entitlement failure without evidence. The comparison steps below are diagnostic inferences: they narrow the likely layer, but they do not prove a single cause.

What should I check before repairing anything?
Start with the lowest-risk checks. They take little time, do not remove local app data and often clear a stale preview or sign-in state.
- Confirm that the PC is online and that Windows can sign in normally.
- Note whether the failure happens in the Insider Hub, Xbox app, browser, or only after a game starts.
- Keep the exact error text, code and approximate time of failure.
- Use one Microsoft account consistently while diagnosing the issue.
- Close duplicate Xbox, Store and browser windows so each retry is a clean attempt.
- If another Cloud Gaming title is available to the account, use it as a second check rather than changing several settings at once.
How do I completely close Xbox Insider Hub?
Minimizing the Hub is not the same as quitting it. A hidden process can retain a stale sign-in or preview state. The official Xbox Insider PC troubleshooting instruction is: “Close the Xbox Insider Hub (be sure to quit the app completely by right clicking the toolbar icon and selecting ‘Close window’).” The instruction was published by Scott, an Xbox Program Manager, on Xbox Wire on April 10, 2018; the wording is old, but the process-level principle remains useful.
- Save any other work, then close the visible Insider Hub window.
- Look in the Windows notification area near the clock. If the Hub icon is hidden, open the small upward arrow.
- Right-click the Hub icon and select Close window, not merely Minimize.
- Wait a few seconds. If the app still appears in Task Manager, select the Xbox Insider Hub process and choose End task.
- Open the Hub again, allow it to finish loading, and retry the same Cloud Gaming action.
If the Hub has no notification-area icon or uses a newer app name, close the app from its window and verify in Task Manager that no Xbox Insider process remains. Do not assume that a label from the older PC workflow appears unchanged in every current build.

Could the Microsoft account be wrong?
Yes. Insider content is account-dependent, and a mismatch between the account in Xbox Insider Hub and the account in Microsoft Store can make a preview appear blank or prevent expected access.
- In Insider Hub, open the profile or account area and record the Microsoft account or Gamertag shown.
- Open the Windows Microsoft Store and inspect the signed-in account under the profile menu.
- Compare both accounts with the one that joined the relevant Windows gaming preview.
- If Windows itself is using a different account, sign out of Windows and sign back in with the intended account.
- Restart the PC, reopen Store and Insider Hub, and allow the preview page time to refresh.
Do not repeatedly leave and rejoin a preview while the account state is still unclear. A blank page can be a synchronization delay or wrong account rather than a Cloud Gaming service fault.
How do I refresh Windows sign-in state safely?
Sign out of Windows, sign back in, and restart if the first sign-in does not clear the problem. This refreshes authentication tokens used by the Store, Xbox app and Insider components without deleting app data.

- Close Xbox Insider Hub, Xbox app, Microsoft Store and any Cloud Gaming browser tab.
- Use Start > account picture > Sign out.
- Sign back in with the account that owns the preview or Cloud Gaming entitlement.
- Restart from Start > Power > Restart.
- Open Microsoft Store first, confirm the intended account, then open Insider Hub and Xbox.
If the Store account is deliberately different from the Windows sign-in account, do not change it casually. Record the existing arrangement and verify which account joined the preview before making account changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich Windows components need updates?
Update the entire Windows gaming stack before attempting resets or reinstallations. Xbox Insider release notes repeatedly tell PC preview participants to update the Xbox app, Gaming Services and Game Bar; those notes also document historical fixes for Cloud Gaming sign-in freezes, interface delays, performance and stability. That history makes version checking important, but it does not prove that a particular old bug is the cause on your PC.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library and select Get updates or Check for updates, depending on the Store version.
- Install updates for Xbox, Gaming Services, Xbox Game Bar and Xbox Insider Hub or the newer Xbox Insider app when listed.
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install relevant Windows updates offered for the PC.
- Restart after updates finish, even if the Store does not request a restart.
- Retry one title and record the app versions if the launch still fails.
The recurring official release-note guidance is concise: “Make sure that you update the Xbox app, Gaming Services and Game Bar to ensure you get all of the fixes!” Treat this as a prerequisite, not a promise that an update will solve every launch failure.
How can browser Cloud Gaming separate the failing layer?
Run one controlled browser test and one controlled Xbox-app test. Use the currently supported Xbox Cloud Gaming browser route for your region and device, because supported browsers and eligibility can change; consult the live Xbox Windows Cloud Gaming support page for current requirements.
- Close Xbox and Insider Hub completely.
- Open a supported browser and sign in with the same Microsoft account used in the Xbox app.
- Launch one known Cloud Gaming title and note whether it reaches the game.
- Close the browser session.
- Open Xbox, choose the same title and repeat the launch.
| Browser result | Xbox app result | Most useful interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Works | Fails | Focus on Xbox app state, Gaming Services, preview build or app-specific sign-in data. |
| Fails | Fails | Investigate account entitlement, service availability, network path or a broader authentication issue. |
| Hub fails to open | Browser works | The Hub installation, Store delivery or preview state is more suspect than Cloud Gaming itself. |
| Game starts | Input fails | Investigate controller pairing, permissions and device compatibility separately from launch. |
These outcomes narrow the search; they do not establish a definitive cause. A temporary service incident can affect both paths, while a preview regression can affect only the app.
Should I repair or reset the Xbox app?
Use repair before reset because repair is less disruptive. Reset can remove local app state and require another sign-in, so use it only after updates, account checks and the browser comparison.

- Find Xbox, select the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair if available.
- Restart Windows and retry.
- If the failure remains, return to the same page and consider Reset. Expect to sign in again and lose local app state.
- Repeat the browser comparison before changing another component.
Do not reset several apps at once. If Xbox works after a single repair, the result is useful evidence; if nothing changes, you have avoided destroying more state than necessary.
What if Gaming Services or Store delivery is damaged?
Gaming Services is a separate Windows component, so an Xbox app repair may not correct it. First update it through Microsoft Store. If Store updates repeatedly fail, capture the error and version information before considering component removal or reinstallation.
- Check Microsoft Store > Library for a pending Gaming Services update.
- Confirm that Microsoft Store itself is current and signed in to the intended account.
- Restart after the update and retry Xbox.
- Use Windows app repair or reset options only for the named component, not the whole gaming stack.
- Avoid third-party “optimizer” utilities and registry changes while diagnosing an account- or preview-dependent problem.
Reinstalling Xbox components is not a guaranteed fix. It downloads data, changes local state and can make a preview enrollment harder to interpret, so reserve it for a clearly damaged installation or an instruction from official support.

Preview enrollment can affect which app, interface and launch behavior you see. The current app may be called Xbox Insider Hub, Xbox Insider, or another updated label; Xbox’s 2020 announcement distinguished the newer Xbox Insider app from the older “Xbox Insider Hub (Legacy)” naming on console. Do not assume an older menu label is present in your build.
- Open the installed Xbox Insider app.
- Select Previews, then locate Windows Gaming if it is listed.
- Open Manage and record the preview name, enrollment state and visible build information.
- Do not select Leave merely as a first troubleshooting step.
- If the preview is clearly corrupt or no longer needed, save your evidence first, then consider leaving and rejoining. Availability and re-enrollment behavior can change.
Xbox Insider release notes are useful for identifying whether a build recently changed Cloud Gaming sign-in, interface or stability behavior. They are historical evidence, not proof that your current build contains the same defect.
What should I do when the game launches but the controller does not work?
Separate launch from input. An Xbox-compatible wireless controller can help isolate an input fault, but it cannot repair an account, entitlement, service or app-launch failure.

- Connect the controller by USB where possible; this removes Bluetooth pairing as a variable.
- Confirm that Windows detects it in Settings > Bluetooth & devices or the relevant USB device list.
- Start the same Cloud Gaming title again.
- If USB works but wireless does not, remove the wireless pairing and pair again according to the controller’s instructions.
- If the browser path is being used, check whether the browser requests permission to access the controller.
- If available, test a second Xbox-compatible controller or another supported input method.
Xbox Insider release notes document controller functionality for browser-based Cloud Gaming, but compatibility can vary by device, browser and connection method. Record whether wired and wireless tests differ when escalating.
How can I tell whether this is an Xbox-side incident?
Do not infer an outage from one failed launch. Compare the browser and app paths, try another title if the account can access one, and note whether other Microsoft services sign in normally. If both Cloud Gaming paths fail for the same account while local Xbox functions work, service availability or entitlement becomes more plausible, but only Xbox’s current status and support information can confirm an incident.
- Check the live Xbox status information and support guidance for the affected region.
- Record the approximate failure time and time zone.
- Do not repeatedly change account or preview settings during a suspected incident.
- Retry after the status information changes, keeping the same title and account so the comparison remains meaningful.
What evidence should I send to Xbox Insider support?
Specific evidence is more actionable than “Cloud Gaming does nothing.” Capture the following before uninstalling, leaving a preview or resetting apps:
- Exact error message or numeric code.
- Windows edition, version and build.
- Xbox app version.
- Gaming Services and Game Bar versions, when visible.
- The exact name and version shown for Xbox Insider Hub or the newer Xbox Insider app.
- Preview name, enrollment state and build.
- Whether the same account works in browser Cloud Gaming.
- Whether one title or several titles fail.
- Whether USB and wireless controller tests differ.
- Approximate time and time zone of each failure.
Use the Xbox Insider feedback or Report a Problem route, and search the official Xbox Insider support community for a matching recent post. Xbox recommends adding information to an existing matching thread when possible rather than scattering identical reports. Include the sequence you already tried and the browser-versus-app result.
Which troubleshooting path should I choose?
Use the least disruptive path that gives you new evidence. The table ranks common actions by risk and diagnostic value.
| Action | Scope | Reversibility | Evidence gained | User cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quit Hub, sign out, restart | Hub and authentication | Fully reversible | Shows whether a stale process or token was involved | Low; a few minutes |
| Update Xbox, Gaming Services, Game Bar and Store | Windows gaming stack | Usually reversible through later updates | Shows whether the installation was behind current fixes | Download time and restart |
| Browser-versus-app comparison | Access path | Fully reversible | Separates app and preview faults from account, service or network issues | Low |
| Repair Xbox app | Xbox app only | Low risk; local state normally retained | Shows whether app files or registration were damaged | Low to moderate |
| Reset Xbox app | Xbox app data and sign-in state | Not fully reversible | Shows whether cached local state was corrupt | Sign-in and configuration time |
| Leave and rejoin preview | Preview enrollment | Conditional; re-entry may not be immediate | Shows whether enrollment state is involved | Re-enrollment risk and downloads |
| Reinstall components | Potentially the whole gaming stack | Least reversible | Only useful when installation damage is strongly indicated | Downloads, setup and lost local state |
When should I stop changing settings?
Stop when you have a reproducible symptom and enough evidence for escalation. Continuing to reset, reinstall and leave previews can erase the very account and build information support staff need. If browser Cloud Gaming works but Xbox does not, preserve that contrast; if both fail, preserve the common account, title and time details.

The practical conclusion is to work from process and account checks toward component repair, not the other way around. Fully closing Insider Hub, aligning accounts, updating the gaming stack and comparing browser access resolves or localizes many failures without sacrificing preview state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Xbox Insider Hub blank after I joined a preview?
A blank page can occur when the Hub is signed in with a different Microsoft account than the one used in Microsoft Store or when enrollment has not synchronized. Compare the displayed account and preview state, then sign out, restart Windows and allow the app to refresh before leaving the preview.
Can browser Cloud Gaming work when the Xbox app is broken?
Yes. The browser and Xbox app use different client layers, so browser success points toward an Xbox app, Gaming Services or preview-build problem rather than proving the account is invalid. Keep the account and title the same when comparing them.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWill leaving the Windows Gaming Preview delete my Xbox games?
Leaving the preview changes enrollment; it is not a general license-removal operation. Re-enrollment availability and local app behavior can change, however, so record the preview details first and avoid leaving solely as an experiment.
What information does Xbox support need for a Cloud Gaming launch failure?
Provide the exact error, Windows build, Xbox and Gaming Services versions, preview name, account-path comparison, title affected, controller connection method and failure time zone. These details let support distinguish a client regression from an account or service issue.
