Xbox 360 games that Microsoft has made backward compatible keep their original achievement systems. On a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console, achievements unlock to the same Xbox profile, add to its Gamerscore, and—where supported—use the existing game saves and add-ons. The game remains identified as its Xbox 360 release, so newer hardware does not automatically create a second achievement list.
Original Xbox games are different: they do not have Xbox achievements because achievements were not available on the original console when those games launched. Your Gamerscore stays on the same profile

The achievement list is normally the original Xbox 360 list
Backward compatibility does not normally add a second set of achievements simply because the game is running on newer hardware. Check the exact product entry before starting if you are tracking completion: a remaster or remake can be sold as a separate game with its own achievement list, while the backward-compatible release preserves the Xbox 360 identity.
Saves and add-ons can follow the game
Microsoft says supported Xbox 360 backward-compatible games can retain game saves and add-ons. This lets a player continue an existing progression rather than beginning solely because the game moved to a newer console. Xbox Series S
Series S is digital-only. It cannot read a physical Xbox 360 or Original Xbox disc, so access requires a compatible digital purchase or a digital license already attached to the account. A disc that works in a Series X does not provide a way to install the game on Series S.
How do I start a backward-compatible Xbox 360 game?
First confirm the exact game and edition in Microsoft’s official backward-compatibility catalog. Once the title is supported, the installation path depends on how you own it.

- For a digital purchase: open the console’s Ready to Install area and look for the supported title associated with your account.
- For a compatible disc on Xbox One or Series X: insert the disc. The console downloads the playable backward-compatible version to its hard drive.
- Keep the disc available: after installation, the disc must remain in the drive as the license check for play.
- On Series S: use the digital version; the console has no disc drive.
- Sign in with the intended Xbox profile: that profile receives the achievements and Gamerscore earned during play.
Installing a disc does not make an unsupported title compatible. If the game is absent from the catalog, inserting the disc will not create a playable modern-console version.
What happens to Original Xbox achievements?
Original Xbox games do not have Xbox achievements under Microsoft’s documented policy. The reason is historical: Xbox achievements were not available on the original Xbox when those games were released.
Microsoft’s stated rationale
When Microsoft described Xbox Originals in 2007, it said those games would retain the features available at their initial release rather than receive newly added Achievements or Gamerscore. When Original Xbox games later arrived through Xbox One backward compatibility, Xbox Wire repeated that there would be no achievements because the functionality had not originally existed.

The current official backward-compatibility FAQ uses the same explanation: “There are no XBOX achievements for Original XBOX games because this functionality was not available on the Original XBOX at that time of its release.” Therefore, launching an Original Xbox title on Xbox One or Series X|S does not create an achievement list or add Gamerscore.

Do not confuse an Original Xbox title with a later remaster
A modern remaster or remake may have its own product entry and achievement set. That is a separate release decision, not an achievement layer added to the original backward-compatible game. Verify which edition you own before assuming that a completion will appear in your achievement history.

Can I use an old Xbox 360 disc on a new Xbox?
Sometimes. The disc must be for a title in the supported backward-compatibility catalog, and the console must have a disc drive. Xbox One and Xbox Series X can use a compatible disc to trigger a download of the playable version, but the disc must stay inserted whenever you play.
Series S cannot use any physical disc because it is digital-only. A compatible digital license is required instead. The existence of an Xbox 360 disc, its region, or its age does not by itself establish compatibility; check the exact title listing first.

Are Original Xbox online features available?
Backward compatibility does not restore every service that existed around an old game. Microsoft’s documentation says legacy Original Xbox online multiplayer and in-game marketplace services are not available through the compatibility program.
Offline modes can still work when the original game supported them. Local co-op, same-console party play and system-link functionality may remain available, but support is game-specific. Treat “backward compatible” as a statement about running the game, not a promise that every historical server or marketplace will return.
How should achievement hunters check a game’s edition?
Use the product identity shown in the console store or compatibility catalog before buying, installing or beginning a completion run.
- Confirm the platform label: distinguish an Xbox 360 backward-compatible entry from an Original Xbox entry.
- Check the exact title and edition: bundles, remasters and remakes can have different product records and achievement lists.
- Verify ownership method: identify whether your access is digital or requires a disc, especially if you use Series S.

“Every Xbox 360 disc works on Xbox One.”
Compatibility is selective. A physical disc is useful only when Microsoft supports that exact title, and installation still requires the disc to remain in the drive.
“A newer console creates a new completion.”
Normally it does not for the backward-compatible Xbox 360 release. The original game identity and achievement set remain in use. A separate remaster or remake is the case to investigate when you see a distinct list.
“Backward compatibility restores the old online ecosystem.”
It does not. Legacy Original Xbox online multiplayer and in-game marketplace services are specifically unavailable, while offline multiplayer may continue where the original game supports it.
Will the policy change?
Compatibility catalogs and platform features can change. The documented rule for Original Xbox games remains that they have no Xbox achievements, while supported Xbox 360 backward-compatible titles retain theirs.
