To redeem a promotional PC game, sign in to the Microsoft account that should own it, open the Xbox app on Windows, choose your gamerpic in the top-left, then Settings > Redeem a code. Enter the 25-character code and confirm. The game then appears in My Library, where you can select it and choose Install. A browser at xbox.com/en-US/redeem or redeem.microsoft.com is often easier when the code arrived in an email or message because it clearly shows the account receiving the licence. Check the account and region first: Xbox says a redeemed code cannot be transferred later.
What does a promotional code redeem in the Xbox app?
The Xbox app accepts several Microsoft 25-character strings, but they grant different things. Identify the code before troubleshooting an apparent installation problem.

Microsoft describes gift cards, download codes and tokens as using the same redemption flow once they are applied to an account: Microsoft Support’s redeem-a-code guidance. An Office key belongs at Office.com/setup, and a Windows activation key belongs in Settings > System > Activation > Change product key; neither is an Xbox game code.

What should I check before redeeming?
- Correct Microsoft account: inspect the gamerpic and account email in the Xbox app, Microsoft Store or browser. Xbox’s warning is explicit: “Just make sure you’re signed in to the correct Microsoft account before you redeem your code because you won’t be able to transfer it.”
- Correct platform: a key sold for Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, GOG or Rockstar will not activate in the Xbox app. The offer or order must identify Microsoft Store, Xbox or Xbox app for PC.
- Correct region: some codes are country-specific. An account location that does not match the code can produce an “Incorrect region” error.
- Code intact: have all 25 characters visible. Codes normally appear as five groups of five, separated by hyphens.
- Xbox app available: open Start and search for Xbox. If it is not installed, install the official Xbox app from Microsoft Store or use Xbox’s PC page.
How do I redeem a code in the Xbox app on Windows?

- Enter the 25-character code. You can usually omit the hyphens; remove any leading or trailing spaces copied from an email.
- Select Next, read the product and account shown, and follow the confirmation prompts.
After a successful game redemption, Xbox directs you to install from the applicable console or PC. On Windows, that means the Xbox app or Microsoft Store library, not a second activation in another launcher.
Is a browser easier than the Xbox app for redeeming a code?
Yes, especially when the code is in an email, Slack message or a Partner Center link. A browser makes the receiving account and product confirmation prominent and lets you paste without retyping.

All of these routes apply the entitlement to the same Microsoft account. Redeeming in a phone browser is supported; the Xbox mobile app itself is not. Xbox’s FAQ states, “You can’t redeem a code on the XBOX mobile app at this time.”

A publisher may send a link such as https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=532540&mstoken=<promotional_code> instead of displaying the code. Open it while signed in, review the product at https://account.microsoft.com/billing/redeem, and select Redeem. On Windows 10 or 11, Microsoft says the Microsoft Store opens the product overview after a successful redemption so you can select Install. If the Store app is unavailable, the Store web listing can still attach the licence to your account for a later PC installation.
How do I install the game after redeeming it?
Use the Xbox app library after the account confirmation has completed. Ownership and installation are separate actions.

- Select My Library in the side panel.
- Scroll to All games and select the redeemed title.
- Set the filter to GAMES I OWN. This filter shows purchased and redeemed games; removing it also displays the Game Pass catalogue.
- Select Install, choose the drive or installation location, and confirm.
- Monitor the download under Queue at the bottom of the side panel.
If the title is not visible, open Microsoft Store, select Library, turn off Show installed products only under Sort and filter, and select the cloud download icon. Microsoft’s library URI is ms-windows-store://mylibrary/. On xbox.com/games, an Install to PC option hands the installation off to the Xbox app.
How do I install redeemed add-ons?
In Xbox app, open My Library > Owned > the game > Add-ons for this game > Show All. Select the owned add-on and choose Install. Its progress appears under Downloading at the bottom left.

In My Library, right-click the game and choose Manage > Uninstall. Windows also exposes the app under Settings > Apps > Installed apps, where a supported installation can be moved to another drive.
Why does a redeemed promotional game show “Buy” instead of “Install”?
For some Partner Center promotions, Microsoft documents a successful redemption followed by a Buy button. Select Buy; Microsoft says the transaction should complete at no charge and then allow installation. Do not buy the game again through a different account.
A Buy button can also mean you are viewing the Store with a different Microsoft account, the title is not the same edition, or the code granted subscription access rather than permanent ownership. Sign out and back in with the account used for redemption, then check both Xbox app Games I Own and Microsoft Store My Library.

What is the difference between a game code, Game Pass code and gift card?
Named game code
A named Xbox or Microsoft Store code grants that game to the Microsoft account. It should appear under Games I Own even if you do not currently subscribe to Game Pass.
Game Pass or PC Game Pass code
This adds subscription time. Games installed from the catalogue are governed by the subscription and can disappear from playable access when the entitlement ends; the membership code does not turn every catalogue title into an owned game.
Gift card or account-balance code
This increases Microsoft account balance. It does not place a particular promotional game in your library; use the balance to purchase the game or a subscription. Microsoft says the balance can be spent in Microsoft Store online, on Windows or on Xbox.
Do promotional PC game codes expire?
Expiry depends on who issued the code. Microsoft Learn’s Partner Center policy says promotional codes generated for games never expire and permits 5,000 promotional codes per game. That rule is distinct from other Partner Center apps and add-ons, for which the default lifetime is six months unless an earlier date is set; non-game products also have a 1,600-redemption limit per rolling six-month period.
Retail marketing codes, event giveaways and printed promotions can have their own expiry dates. Follow the date in the message or packaging for those codes rather than assuming the Partner Center game policy applies. A Partner Center product must be published before customers redeem its codes; Microsoft warns that an unpublished product produces an error.

Can I use the same redemption on Xbox and PC?
The licence and account balance stay with the Microsoft account, so you can sign into another Xbox or Windows device with that account. This does not mean every PC game is playable on console. Only titles marked Xbox Play Anywhere provide the cross-device entitlement; an unmarked PC Store game remains a PC entitlement.
Microsoft’s post-redemption wording is to install the specific game “from your console or PC as applicable.” A code redeemed on a PC is therefore usable on a console only when the product’s listing supports that platform.
What should I do when the Xbox app redeem code is not working?
Follow these checks in order. They cover the documented causes without consuming another use of the code.
- Verify the launcher. Confirm that the offer says Xbox, Microsoft Store or Xbox app for PC. Keys for another PC launcher cannot be entered in Xbox.
- Verify the account. Compare the signed-in email or gamerpic with the intended owner. For a child’s code, sign in as that child before redeeming; a family organizer cannot move the entitlement afterward.
- Verify the region. Country-restricted codes can fail with “Incorrect region.” On an Xbox console, check Profile and system > Settings > System > Language and location. If a retailer supplied a foreign-region code, contact that retailer rather than repeatedly retrying.
- Re-enter the code. Paste all 25 characters, strip leading and trailing spaces, and check ambiguous characters. Hyphens are normally optional.
- Check both libraries. Look in Xbox app My Library > GAMES I OWN and Microsoft Store Library before trying again. A code that was accepted silently can return “already used” on a second attempt.
- Use a browser fallback. Try xbox.com/en-US/redeem or redeem.microsoft.com while signed in to the same account.
- Refresh Microsoft Store. Press Windows key + R, run
wsreset.exe, wait for the Store to reopen, then retry the library or installation. - Update Store components. In Microsoft Store, open Library > Get updates, including Gaming Services. Restart Windows after a pending operating-system update.
- Check device authorization. Microsoft Store apps and content can be downloaded to up to 10 devices according to Microsoft device-management guidance cited by Dovetail Games. Remove unused devices at account.microsoft.com/devices.
- Check availability and safety settings. A title can be unavailable in your country, removed from the Store, incompatible with the PC, or hidden by Family Safety because of its age rating.
- Check account enforcement. An Xbox network suspension can block redemption; wait until the enforcement period ends and consult Xbox status information.
- Contact the seller for a damaged physical code. Keep the receipt and use the support path linked from the official redeem page. Microsoft cannot transfer a code that was redeemed to the wrong account.
Why can’t I redeem a code in the Xbox mobile app?
The current Xbox guidance says mobile-app redemption is unavailable. On a phone or tablet, open a browser and use xbox.com/en-US/redeem or redeem.microsoft.com; sign in, paste the code, and confirm the account. You can then install on the Windows PC through the Xbox app.

How did Microsoft’s promotional-code limits affect publishers?
These limits explain why a valid-looking promotion can be unavailable even when the characters are correct. Microsoft Learn’s Partner Center documentation, updated August 24, 2026, states that publishers can generate up to 5,000 promotional codes for a game and that those game codes never expire. For non-game apps and add-ons, a publisher can use single-use codes or one multi-use code capped at 1,600 redemptions in a rolling six-month period; the default non-game lifetime is six months unless shortened.
The product also has to complete Microsoft’s publishing process. A publisher can keep a product undiscoverable in the Store and still distribute a direct promotional link, but customers receive an error if the product itself has not yet been published.
What is the safest redemption workflow?
- Identify whether the string is a named game, subscription, gift card or another Microsoft key.
- Open the browser redemption page if the code was copied from a message; otherwise use the Xbox app path on the PC that will run the game.
- Confirm the displayed Microsoft account and region before selecting Next or the final confirmation.
- After success, open Xbox app My Library, enable GAMES I OWN, and install the title.
- If it is absent, check Microsoft Store Library, order history and the troubleshooting sequence above before entering the code again.

Can I redeem a promotional game code for someone else and give it to them later?
No. Redemption permanently binds the entitlement to the Microsoft account that confirms it. Give an unused code to the intended player, and have that person sign in before redeeming.
Will a redeemed PC game appear on every Windows computer I use?
It appears when the Xbox app or Microsoft Store is signed in to the owning account, but the game still has to be installed separately on each compatible PC. Device-management limits and the title’s regional or hardware requirements can affect additional installations.
What if the promotional game was removed from the Microsoft Store after I redeemed it?
The licence can remain in your account even when a public Store listing is no longer discoverable. Open Xbox app or Microsoft Store libraries and use the owned-title entry; if no entry exists, provide the redemption or order record to Microsoft Support.
Can a family member play a game redeemed on my Microsoft account?
That depends on Microsoft account and console/Windows sharing settings, not on the code itself. The redemption owner remains the account shown at confirmation, so do not redeem on a family organizer’s account if the child is meant to own the licence.
Why does my code say it has already been used when I never installed the game?
