Typing a name into the WoW: Forever character-creation screen is not the documented reservation step. Blizzard’s current instructions make creating the character—and confirming that it appears on your character list—the action that preserves the choice. If you abandon the screen before creation, Blizzard has not published a separate hold period, expiration timer, or guarantee for that unsubmitted name. A character that is created but never played is a different case: the October 2026 instructions do not require you to enter the game immediately, although they also do not promise indefinite retention.
What happens if you type a name but do not create the character?
The name should be treated as unreserved until character creation is submitted successfully. How do the different name states compare?

When is the WoW: Forever reservation window?
The current Early Name Reservation window runs from October 27 through November 3, 2026. The announced WoW: Forever launch is November 4, 2026, so reservation is a pre-launch event rather than a launch-day grace period. A name entered after the window, or in a client that is not participating in the event, is not covered by these instructions.
Blizzard says the early restriction is up to three characters total across all rulesets. That is an event-wide limit, not three names per ruleset. The publisher also states that the restriction applies only during Early Name Reservation. The limit does not turn an unfinished character-creation screen into a reservation, and using another ruleset does not create additional early slots.
Who can use Early Name Reservation?
Eligibility is tied to a qualifying upgrade or Collector’s Edition purchase on the specific WoW account you use. Before troubleshooting a missing option, verify that the Battle.net app is signed into that account and that it has the qualifying entitlement. A purchase on a different WoW account should not be assumed to unlock reservation on the account you happen to have open.
Name selection is first-come, first-served. Eligibility gives you access to the event; it does not guarantee a particular spelling. Blizzard’s naming guidance explicitly cautions that “Desired names cannot be guaranteed.” If another eligible player completes creation first, the name may no longer be available even when your account qualifies.

How do you complete and verify a reservation?
Use the game client rather than relying on a name field that has not been submitted. The following checklist follows Blizzard’s published flow and adds the verification step needed to distinguish a real character from an abandoned draft.
- Check the account. Open the Battle.net desktop app and confirm that the signed-in account is the one with the qualifying WoW: Forever upgrade or Collector’s Edition entitlement.
- Open the correct game version. Select the WoW: Forever client in Battle.net. Do not use a stress-test build or assume a retail-WoW character screen is part of this event.
- Choose a ruleset. Select the ruleset in which you intend to create the character. Remember that all rulesets count toward the combined three-character early limit.
- Enter the name and finish creation. Complete the required race, class, appearance, and other character fields, then submit the character. Merely typing the name and backing out does not match Blizzard’s documented reservation action.
- Confirm the result. Return to the character list and check that the new character appears with the expected name and ruleset. If it is absent, treat the attempt as incomplete and try again while the window remains open.
- Record the account and character details. A screenshot of the character list can help you distinguish a completed creation from a draft when you later return to the client, but it does not create an additional reservation or transfer the name.
Do you have to play the character immediately?
No immediate-play requirement appears in the current Early Name Reservation instructions. The documented action is character creation, not reaching a level, entering a zone, or completing a quest. A created character that remains on the list is therefore different from a name that was only typed and abandoned.
That silence should not be read as a promise that every created character is protected forever. Blizzard’s announcement explains how to create characters during the early window, but it does not set an indefinite-retention policy for characters that are never played. If the name matters, leave the character created and monitor later official account or game notices rather than deleting it or assuming a permanent guarantee.

What if you delete the character?
Deletion is a separate action from failing to finish creation. For the 2019 WoW Classic name-reservation event, Blizzard stated that deleting a created character made its name immediately available for someone else to claim. That rule is useful caution: deleting a name-holding character can release the name.

However, the 2019 announcement is historical evidence for that specific Classic event. It does not establish an identical deletion rule for WoW: Forever or for retail WoW. Blizzard’s current WoW: Forever material reviewed for the 2026 window does not publish a universal post-deletion timer or a cross-version policy. Do not delete a character solely because you believe an unplayed character will expire under the 2019 rule.
Are stress-test characters and names carried into the reservation?
No. Blizzard scheduled stress-test characters and their names to be wiped before the Early Name Reservation period. Participation in a test therefore did not itself preserve a name for the 2026 event.
If a name appeared on a test character but is not available when you enter the reservation client, the test wipe is the relevant distinction. You must use the Early Name Reservation flow and complete a new character creation on the eligible account.

Blizzard’s wording also separates access from certainty. The event lets an eligible account create up to three characters across rulesets, but names remain first-come, first-served and desired names cannot be guaranteed. A successful character-list entry is the strongest practical confirmation available in the published instructions; it is not a promise that Blizzard will never change a character, naming, or account policy.
What is still unknown about an unsubmitted name?
No official statistic or developer statement in the current material measures how long an unsubmitted name stays unavailable, how often players lose one after abandoning creation, or whether a backend lock exists for a short period. Because that information is not published, a precise timer would be speculation.
The safest interpretation is operational rather than numerical: until creation is submitted and the character appears on the list, assume the name can be claimed by another eligible player. If you encounter a temporary “name unavailable” message after abandoning a draft, wait for the client to refresh and retry, but do not infer a guaranteed release schedule from that message.

If the character list still does not show the character, the published instructions do not provide a separate recovery process for an abandoned name. Keep any account and character details you have, and consult Blizzard’s current support or event notices for the applicable version. Avoid deleting other characters or making a second purchase on the assumption that either action will restore a name; neither outcome is established by the reservation guidance.
