Eligibility is attached to the specific WoW account on which the qualifying purchase was made. The notice’s footnote also refers to the WoW: Forever Digital Upgrade or Collector’s Edition. The important qualification is account-specific entitlement: the purchase must be recorded on the exact WoW account you intend to use for the reservation.

Reserve the character you care about most first. A low-priority experiment can consume one of the three slots before you reach the name you actually want, and the first-come, first-served system gives you no assurance that a later attempt will succeed.
What should I install before trying to reserve a name?
Blizzard’s preparation steps are straightforward: update the graphics driver, install or update the Battle.net desktop app, and install the correct World of Warcraft: Forever game version. These steps remove avoidable launcher and installation delays; they do not require a third-party optimizer.

3. Select World of Warcraft: Forever
In Battle.net, select World of Warcraft, open the Game Version menu above Play, choose World of Warcraft: Forever, and install it. Selecting a different World of Warcraft version does not prepare the client used by the reservation flow.
4. Allow time for updates
Complete downloads, patches, and any restart before the regional opening time. The practical goal is to reach the character-creation screen with the Forever client already installed, rather than beginning a large download when names are being claimed.
How does the WoW Forever two-name system work?
Every character uses a first name and a last or secondary name. The complete two-name combination is unique within your region; the first name alone does not have to be unique. Blizzard’s explanation is that “What matters is the complete two-name combination.”
For example, another player using the first name “Aeron” does not automatically block “Aeron Vale” if that full combination is available. Your first name still matters for identity and communication, but availability is evaluated on the complete pair.

What is the secondary name for?
The secondary name can add a family, place, reputation, guild, or other identity cue. You can use the same secondary name for related characters to make them read as a family or group, while changing the first name to distinguish each character.
Because the secondary name remains visible in chat, choose one that is easy to read, pronounce, and type. A clever spelling that looks acceptable above the character may become confusing when other players address you in conversation.
Can I hide the secondary name?
Yes. In the game client, open Escape → Options → Nameplates → My Secondary Name and disable its display above your character. This changes the in-world presentation only; it does not remove the secondary name from chat or change the uniqueness of the full combination.

How should I prepare a shortlist of names?
Prepare three to six complete combinations before you enter the flow, then rank them. The shortlist is practical protection against two constraints established by Blizzard: names are first-come, first-served, and the account can reserve only three characters in total.

Write each option as it will appear in the game: first name followed by secondary name. Do not arrive with one famous first name and plan to improvise the second part after the first attempt fails. A complete list lets you move immediately to the next option.
Rank by character priority
Put the character you most want at the top, even if a less important combination seems more likely to be available. Use the first reservation slot for the character you would regret losing, then decide whether the next two slots are worth spending on alts, role-play concepts, or experiments.
Check readability and communication
- Say the full combination aloud once; awkward or ambiguous pronunciation is a warning sign.
- Type it exactly as planned so you know which characters and spaces you intend to enter.
- Prefer a secondary name that other players can distinguish in chat without an explanation.
- Keep multiple concepts ready rather than relying on variations that differ only by a repeated character or unusual spelling.
What names can be rejected even if they look available?
A name passing an initial field check is not a guarantee that it complies with Blizzard’s Code of Conduct. Blizzard says restrictions can cover confusion, impersonation, restricted words, prohibited spellings, repeated-character patterns, and attempts to split a restricted word across the two names.
Avoid impersonation and confusion
Do not make a combination that could be mistaken for another player, a Blizzard employee, a recognized character, or an official service. Changing capitalization or inserting a second letter does not necessarily remove the underlying problem.
Do not evade restricted terms
Check the complete pair, not just each field independently. Blizzard specifically notes that attempts to divide a restricted word between the first and secondary names can still violate the rules.
Use the client’s decision as authoritative
Older guides and third-party lists may claim exact limits for field length, punctuation, accented characters, or capitalization. Blizzard’s official material does not publish a complete numeric table for those constraints, so do not treat an old list as definitive. If the current client rejects a combination, choose another complete option rather than trying to work around the message.

How do I reserve my WoW Forever character name?
Once the account and client are ready, the reservation itself is part of character creation. Keep your ranked list beside you and move to the next full combination when the first is unavailable or rejected.
- Sign in to Battle.net with the WoW account that owns the qualifying purchase.
- Open World of Warcraft and confirm that World of Warcraft: Forever is selected in the Game Version menu.
- Start the game during your region’s reservation window.
- Begin character creation and enter the highest-priority complete first-name/secondary-name combination.
- Submit the combination once. If it is taken or rejected, select the next complete combination on your list instead of repeatedly modifying the same risky name.
- Before creating another character, check how many of your three account-wide reservation slots remain.
The client requires character creation as part of the reservation flow. A name is not safely reserved merely because you typed it into a field or saw it pass an early screen; finish the creation sequence shown by the client.
What should I do if my name is taken or rejected?
Use the next ranked combination. A taken name means another player claimed that complete pair first; a rejection means the combination did not meet the current naming requirements. Neither result makes repeated punctuation, doubled letters, or a split restricted word a reliable workaround.
If the name is already taken
Move to the next complete option, keeping the character concept but changing the secondary name if that is the part that can preserve the identity. Because uniqueness applies to the pair, a different secondary name may make a familiar first name usable without resorting to unreadable spelling.
If the name violates requirements
Discard the combination and choose a clean alternative. Remove anything that suggests impersonation, restricted language, or an evasive spelling. Do not assume that adding extra repeated characters makes a prohibited term acceptable.
If you run out of ideas
Blizzard points players to the in-game random name generator as a fallback. You can use generated suggestions as raw material, then select a complete combination that is readable and fits the character you intend to play.

That omission matters when you see highly specific limits repeated in forum posts or older articles. Treat those figures as unconfirmed unless the live client or a later Blizzard specification supports them. The safest preparation is a set of ordinary, readable combinations that comply with the broad conduct rules.
