As of October 30, 2026, World of Warcraft: Forever is not live yet. Blizzard has scheduled its launch for November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST; its advertised beta ended October 21. When it launches, Forever will be a separate, permanent level-60 game alongside Classic and Retail—not a new Retail expansion or simply another Classic realm. Choose Forever for a fresh journey through original Azeroth, a specific Classic ruleset to revisit an older-era game, or Retail to follow the current story and modern systems.
The right choice depends less on which version is “best” than on what you want from WoW: exploratory leveling, a particular historical ruleset, or the live mainline game. The comparison below reflects Blizzard’s announcements and live-game information available at this date, not a post-launch review of Forever.
How do Forever, Classic, and Retail differ?
The short version: Forever is a new permanent level-60 experience built around original Azeroth; Classic is a collection of distinct older-era or alternative rulesets; and Retail is the current mainline game. Blizzard describes Forever as a permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW and states that it is not a mode, season, or new version of Classic. What is WoW Forever, and what will it add?
Forever is an upcoming, separate WoW game centered on a new level-60 journey through the original continents. Blizzard places its story after the events of Warcraft III: Reforged – Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. The announced route spans Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, with the world and leveling experience taking priority over a rush to endgame.
Its central design choices are deliberate constraints: Blizzard says Forever will have no flying mounts and no level scaling. Without flying, travel remains grounded in the world; without level scaling, areas and enemies do not automatically adjust to each character’s level. Those choices may appeal to players who want exploration and progression to feel consequential. They may frustrate someone who prefers the convenience and flexibility of modern WoW. These are design intentions, not evidence about how players will experience the live game after launch.
Blizzard’s announcement lists more than 1,000 new quests and nine new dungeons. Its plans also include a 10-player Barrow Deeps raid, a 20-player Hyjal Summit raid, and a 15-versus-15 Darkspear Islands battleground. Those are announced counts and plans, not independently verified post-launch results. Blizzard has scheduled the new Forever raids to unlock on December 9, 2026, rather than at launch. The distinction is useful if your main reason to join is raiding: launch-day access and later raid availability are not the same thing.

These features broaden Forever beyond a simple recreation of an early WoW ruleset, but their presence does not make the game a Retail expansion. Blizzard has also announced optional transmog, Classic and modern visual presets, HD and SD character options, and official gamepad support specifically for Forever. These are choices layered onto its Classic-inspired world and constraints; they do not mean every Classic realm has the same features, nor that every controller model is guaranteed to work. A player who values a particular control setup should verify device compatibility rather than treating “gamepad support” as a universal promise.

Who should choose Forever?
Choose Forever if you want a new, permanent, level-60 journey through familiar continents with new places and quests, and you like the idea that travel, leveling, and encounters with other players are part of the point—not just obstacles on the way to endgame. It is the most direct fit for someone who wants the original-world setting to feel like a fresh destination rather than a setting to pass through on the way to the current expansion.
It may also suit you if you enjoy a more constrained world. No flying and no level scaling are not minor feature omissions: they shape how the world is traversed and how character level relates to areas. If those choices sound engaging, Forever’s priorities may be a better fit than Retail’s modern convenience. If they sound like friction, the new quests and locations may not outweigh that trade-off.
Forever is not the choice if you need to play immediately on October 30, 2026; its scheduled launch is still ahead. Nor is it the obvious choice if your main aim is to follow Midnight’s live story or replay a particular expansion’s rules. Its announced content is promising on paper, but its launch population, pacing in practice, and server performance cannot be established from announcements alone.
When is Forever available, and what can you do before launch?
Blizzard’s announced global launch time is November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST. The beta ended October 21, so a higher-edition beta entitlement is not a current reason to buy a pack. As of the October 29 information in Blizzard’s announcement, Early Name Reservation was listed for October 27 through November 3, subject to first-come availability. A reservation window is not a promise that any requested name will be available.
Because Forever has not launched at this article’s cutoff, do not treat announced features, content counts, or roadmap items as proof of how the released game performs. Check Blizzard’s official launch announcement for changes to timing or access before making plans, especially if you are coordinating with friends in other time zones.
Which Classic should you choose?
Choose Classic when you are looking for an older WoW era or a ruleset that Blizzard offers under the Classic name. First identify the exact experience: Blizzard lists Hardcore, Seasonal, and Progression realm categories. Those categories are not interchangeable, and it is inaccurate to assume every Classic realm is a vanilla-era version of WoW.

For example, Mists of Pandaria Classic is a documented Progression option with a level-90 cap. That makes it a different proposition from Forever’s announced level-60 journey through Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. If your goal is to revisit a particular expansion or era, check the realm’s name, category, current content, and rules before creating a character. “I want Classic” is a starting preference, not enough information to know which game you will enter.
Classic is likely the better fit if nostalgia for a particular older experience is the deciding factor. It is also the choice when its specific rules—rather than a new set of quests and places—are what you want to revisit. Forever may feel related in its emphasis on a grounded world, but Blizzard explicitly positions it as its own permanent game, not simply Classic with extra quests.

Why choose Retail and Midnight?
Choose Retail if you want the live mainline story and current expansion systems. Midnight is already live at the research cutoff and offers level-90 progression, four new or reimagined zones, housing, Delves, and revised onboarding for new and returning players. Blizzard also describes contemporary classes and systems as part of the current game.
Retail is the clearest fit for someone who wants to follow the Worldsoul Saga as it develops and play within the current expansion rather than start a fresh level-60 journey or return to an older ruleset. Its modern systems and level progression are a different set of priorities from Forever’s no-flying, no-scaling approach. That is a design distinction, not a verdict that one pace is better for everyone.
There is an important access distinction: a WoW subscription or game time covers standard access to several WoW offerings, but Midnight itself is a separate expansion purchase consideration. Do Forever, Classic, and Retail use the same subscription?
Blizzard says standard Forever access at launch is included with a WoW subscription or game time. The documented Mists of Pandaria Classic option also requires only a subscription or game time. If you already pay for WoW, that makes trying more than one path plausible, but it does not erase the distinctions between the games or include every optional purchase.

Retail needs a separate check: Midnight is a separate expansion purchase consideration. Optional Forever upgrades are also distinct from standard access. Blizzard lists Skyborne race and Zephras Isle starting-experience access in the optional Skyborne Heroic Pack. The Epic Pack adds benefits including 30 days of game time starting November 4. The limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection includes Warcraft III: Reforged and Forsaken Kingdom. None of those pack extras should be confused with the standard subscription-based access Blizzard announced for Forever.
Do not rely on a single dollar figure unless you have checked the current price for your region and the specific edition. Subscription and upgrade prices can vary by region, and the available information here does not establish a universal current price. Before paying, compare the entitlement list for the edition you are considering with the access you actually need. Blizzard’s Forever upgrades announcement is the source for pack benefits and timing.

No. The physical World of Warcraft: Forever Collector’s Edition is a separate optional collectible, not a requirement for standard game access. Blizzard lists a collection digital code, a 13-inch Dwarf and Bear statue, a Zephras Isle mousepad, art prints, pins, and a companion journal among its contents.
Blizzard’s updated notice says orders from the documented restock are expected to ship and arrive in February 2027, after the game’s scheduled launch. That makes the Collector’s Edition a poor choice if your goal is to have a physical package before playing at launch. Verify the exact code and benefit timing, seller, stock, and shipping terms through Blizzard’s stated Gear Store route before purchasing; the existence of a product name is not evidence that a third-party listing is authorized or in stock. Start with the experience you want, then confirm timing and entitlement. A shared subscription may let you try more than one included path, but it will not make the games’ design or content the same.

- Want a fresh level-60 journey centered on original Azeroth? Put Forever on your list, but account for its November 4 scheduled launch and its announced no-flying, no-level-scaling design.
- Want to decide based on launch performance or how the leveling feels in practice? Announcements cannot answer that. Wait until the game is live and assess actual player reports rather than treating planned content or preview claims as measured outcomes.
