Short answer: World of Warcraft Housing purchases are mainly account-level entitlements shared across your Warband, not race-locked character items. You need the Midnight expansion to buy a home or join a neighborhood. You can visit neighborhoods and collect some Housing items without the expansion, but using Housing decor also requires an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time. Horde and Alliance characters can use homes across faction lines, although the neighborhood architecture keeps its faction theme. Refunds require caution: Blizzard has documented Hearthsteel compensation for a specific price adjustment, but that example is not a universal refund promise for every Housing purchase.
The practical distinctions are whether you own Midnight, whether your account has subscription or game time, whether the item is earned or bought with Hearthsteel, and whether your transaction qualifies for a Blizzard support remedy.
What do I need to buy a World of Warcraft house?
You need the Midnight expansion to purchase a home or join a neighborhood. Blizzard’s Housing Early Access notes state: “You won’t be able to purchase a home or join a Neighborhood without the expansion.” That requirement is separate from the ability to see Housing content.
What players without Midnight can do
A player who does not own Midnight can still visit neighborhoods and collect some Housing items from activities and vendors. Those activities let you encounter the system and earn certain decor, but they do not grant the right to purchase a house or become a neighborhood member.

What subscription or game time adds
Using Housing decor requires both Midnight and a World of Warcraft subscription or game time. Blizzard’s promotional terms also state that the relevant Housing item is not available in Classic games and requires a World of Warcraft subscription or game time. An expansion license therefore is not a substitute for an active subscription or game-time entitlement when you want to place and use decor.
Separate the three access checks
- Home purchase: Midnight is required.
- Neighborhood membership: Midnight is required.
- Decor use: Midnight plus a World of Warcraft subscription or game time is required.
If a purchase option is missing, check these entitlements before assuming that a character, race, or faction is blocked.
Can my other WoW characters use the Housing items I bought?
Yes. Blizzard says Housing is shared across a Warband. Your characters can come and go from the same house, and Housing rewards are shared across the Warband so that the collection can be used regardless of which character earned an item.
What Warband sharing means in practice
An item earned by one character is not limited to that character’s personal collection when it is a Housing reward. Another character in the same Warband can use the shared collection, provided that character has the required game access. The sharing applies to houses and decor collections rather than changing the expansion or subscription requirements.
What Warband sharing does not do
Warband sharing does not let an account without Midnight purchase a home, and it does not replace subscription or game-time access for decor use. It also does not change the visual theme of the neighborhood where a house is located. Those are separate rules from collection ownership.

Can Horde and Alliance characters share a house?
Yes. Faction does not prevent a character from using a cross-faction home. Blizzard gives the example that an Orc character can use an Alliance house, and states that an Alliance character and a Horde character can each own one house in either the Horde or Alliance neighborhood zones.
How cross-faction ownership works
A house is not restricted to the faction of the character who enters it. If your Warband contains Horde and Alliance characters, both sides can access the shared Housing setup, subject to the normal expansion and subscription requirements.
The limitation is the neighborhood’s architecture
An Alliance neighborhood uses Alliance architecture, while a Horde neighborhood uses Horde architecture. Neutral architecture can appear in either neighborhood type. A character may use a house across faction lines, but the exterior environment does not freely switch to the opposite faction’s architectural style simply because a different-faction character is visiting.
Do race restrictions affect WoW Housing purchases?
No general race restriction blocks Housing ownership or use. Race is not the purchasing rule; the relevant checks are expansion access, subscription or game time, Warband membership, and the neighborhood’s architectural theme.
What the Orc example shows
Blizzard’s example of an Orc using an Alliance house demonstrates that a character’s race does not have to match the neighborhood’s faction. The same principle applies when characters move through a shared Warband collection.

What to check if a character appears blocked
- Confirm that the account has Midnight if the action is buying a house or joining a neighborhood.
- Confirm that the account has a World of Warcraft subscription or game time if the action is using decor.
- Confirm that the character belongs to the Warband holding the shared collection.
- Check whether the issue is actually the neighborhood’s architecture rather than a race lock.
What exactly am I buying when I purchase Housing content?
Housing has two broad acquisition channels: a large earnable collection and a smaller paid-shop component. Blizzard says the vast majority of Housing items are earnable in game, while only a small fraction is available from the shop.
| Purchase or entitlement layer | What it provides | How it is obtained | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midnight expansion | House-purchase and neighborhood-membership access | Expansion entitlement | Without it, you can visit and collect some items but cannot buy a home or join a neighborhood |
| World of Warcraft subscription or game time | Required access for using Housing decor | Subscription or game-time entitlement | Decor use also requires Midnight |
| Earnable Housing items | Decor obtained through in-game activities and vendors | Gameplay and vendors | Availability varies by activity; not every item is a shop purchase |
| Hearthsteel shop items | Paid Housing decor | Hearthsteel purchased with Battle.net balance, then spent in the Battle.net or in-game shop | Blizzard says individual shop purchase should be available even when bundles or sales are offered |
How Hearthsteel fits into the purchase
Hearthsteel is a virtual currency for Housing. Blizzard’s 2026 decor-pack information gives a stated exchange rate of 100 Hearthsteel per $1. Treat that as the published rate for the relevant offering, checked October 2026; currency pricing, regional taxes, and shop inventory can change.
Hearthsteel is not a second subscription and does not unlock the expansion. It is the payment layer for shop decor after the account already meets the access requirements. Blizzard’s developer guidance describes the purpose plainly: “Hearthsteel is for Housing.”
Bundles, sales, and individual purchases
Limited-time bundles or sales may change presentation or price, but Blizzard says all shop Housing items should be available for individual purchase. That policy does not mean every promotion remains active indefinitely. A decor promotion advertised through September 30, 2026 is past its stated end date as of October 30, 2026, so do not assume that a previously advertised offer is still available.
What happens if a Housing item gets cheaper after I buy it?
Blizzard has documented a specific price-adjustment remedy, but it is not a blanket promise covering every later sale. For an affected decor item or pack bought before the adjustment, Blizzard said players would receive either additional items or “a refund of Hearthsteel equal to the difference in price.”

What that documented remedy does and does not establish
- It establishes that Blizzard may compensate buyers when Blizzard announces a qualifying price adjustment.
- The compensation can be extra items or Hearthsteel equal to the price difference.
- It does not establish an automatic refund whenever an item later appears in a sale or bundle.
- It does not establish a cash refund for every transaction.
Keep the original receipt or transaction record and read the announcement tied to the adjustment. The announcement’s affected items, dates, and remedy control; a later discount by itself is not proof that your purchase qualifies.
Can I refund an unwanted or mistaken Housing purchase?
Do not assume that every Housing-item purchase is automatically refundable. Blizzard exposes a refund-request route in Support under payments and refunds, but the detailed United States refund article required an authenticated Support session and could not be verified as a universal rule for all Housing transactions.
How to make a support request
- Collect the transaction details: note the Battle.net account, region, item or pack name, purchase date, currency used, and transaction or order identifier.
- Sign in to Blizzard Support: use the account that made the purchase so the support system can identify the transaction.
- Choose the payments/refunds category: select the Housing transaction and describe whether it was accidental, unwanted, duplicated, or affected by a published price adjustment.
- Submit the request and retain the case information: keep the confirmation and any follow-up correspondence until the request is resolved.
Eligibility depends on the product, transaction type, region, and the policy applied to that account. Support may distinguish an ordinary mistaken purchase from a documented price-adjustment case, so describe the facts precisely and do not promise yourself approval, a time limit, or a cash payout before Blizzard responds.
How should I check a Housing purchase before paying?
A short pre-purchase check prevents most access and refund problems. Use this order because each item answers a different question.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Verify the expansion: make sure the account owns Midnight if you intend to buy a house or join a neighborhood.
- Verify active play access: confirm that the account has a World of Warcraft subscription or game time if you plan to place or use decor.
- Identify the acquisition channel: check whether the item is earned through gameplay, sold for Hearthsteel, or included in a particular offer.
- Check Warband scope: confirm that the characters who need the item are in the Warband that owns the collection.
- Check faction presentation: decide whether the Alliance, Horde, or neutral neighborhood architecture fits your intended house location.
- Review the final shop terms: record the displayed price, currency amount, region, and whether the offer is a bundle, sale, or individual item.
- Save the receipt: retain the order details in case the item later becomes part of a documented price adjustment or you need Support to investigate a mistaken transaction.
Why can’t I buy or use a Housing item?
The symptom usually identifies which entitlement is missing. A missing house-purchase option points to expansion access; a decor-use problem points to subscription or game time, Classic-mode availability, or account scope.

The house or neighborhood option is unavailable
Check whether the account owns Midnight. Visiting a neighborhood or collecting an item without the expansion does not grant house-purchase or neighborhood-membership rights.
The decor is owned but cannot be used
Check for an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time, then confirm that you are playing the supported game rather than a Classic title. The published promotional terms specifically exclude Classic games and require subscription or game time.
A different-faction character cannot find the collection
Confirm that the character is in the same Warband as the character that earned or bought the item. Faction and race are not general Housing locks, but Warband scope and the account’s access entitlements still apply.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is World of Warcraft Housing available in Classic games?
The published Housing promotional terms say the item is not available in Classic games. Housing purchase and decor questions therefore need to be evaluated in the supported modern World of Warcraft environment, not assumed to carry over to a Classic title.
Are Housing shop items sold only in bundles?
No. Blizzard’s stated shop approach is that Housing items should remain available for individual purchase even when a bundle or sale is displayed. A particular promotion can still expire or change, so check the live shop listing rather than relying on an old announcement.
Can a price adjustment give me cash instead of Hearthsteel?
The documented Housing price-adjustment example offered additional items or Hearthsteel equal to the price difference. That example does not promise cash, and an ordinary refund request is evaluated separately through Blizzard Support.

No. Hearthsteel pays for eligible shop decor; it does not replace the Midnight expansion entitlement required to purchase a home or join a neighborhood. Subscription or game-time access is also still required to use decor.
