The Wolves of Mordor is a The Lord of the Rings Online expansion, not a standalone game, and it does not raise LOTRO’s level cap: the cap remains 160. Its main progression change is Survival Instincts, a server-wide system of regional skills and traits that lets characters build power horizontally rather than enter another level band. The expansion launched with Update 50 on 28 October 2026. To begin its new epic, a character must be level 160; from there, progression means unlocking and slotting Survival Instincts, reforging Legendary Items toward item level 570, and pursuing new gear and virtue upgrades.
What changes in Wolves of Mordor progression?
The expansion adds three regions in Draugardh, north-eastern Mordor, and introduces Survival Instincts as an additional form of character advancement. It does not add levels above 160. Instead, characters learn abilities and traits from Draugardh’s inhabitants, then tailor a limited set of them to their role and preferred approach to combat.
Standing Stone Games described the system this way: “Master a new character progression system available to every class. Learn Tactics, Lessons, Skills, and Enhancements from the people who call Draugardh home, then mix and match them to build your own playstyle across all your characters on the server.” The system replaces the Light or Radiance-style overlay associated with the original Mordor expansion and is designed as horizontal advancement.
The story takes place after the War of the Ring. An ancient were-wolf bloodline in a distant part of Mordor is hunting those who helped bring down Sauron. The opening region is Heledhris, a landscape of black hills scorched by Mount Doom. The other regions are Parth Rhavas, with jagged plains and wolf-revering Easterlings, and Nan Ogol, a mist-shrouded land of were-wolves and forgotten horrors. More than 200 quests, 90 deeds, and 30 Missions are included in the expansion, according to Standing Stone Games.

How do I start Wolves of Mordor?
You need a level 160 character to begin the new epic, …and the Verses of Victory. Look for Orthonn of the Grey Company outside the city stables in Minas Tirith (Midsummer). Completing The Song of Waves and Wind is recommended, but not required.
- Reach level 160. The epic and the new endgame progression are aimed at characters at the existing level cap.
- Travel to Minas Tirith (Midsummer). Swift travel is available from major stable-masters, including South Bree, Edoras, Thorin’s Gate, Michel Delving, Rivendell, and the Beorninghus.
- Speak with Orthonn. Starting the new epic leads into the story and the Draugardh regions, where Survival Instincts are introduced.
- Meet the Woses in Heledhris. They teach the first Tactic, Lesson, and Skill Set. Early in the region, emissaries from the Khemozel, Scouts of Draugardh, and Tetikir introduce their respective approaches.
The opening areas preview several kinds of enemies: intelligent Gaurhoth were-wolves associated with Morgoth and Sauron, lesser Draugrim, berserk Khurz-hai, deformed Hinderlings, winged Orming, vulture-like Feasters, and venomous Mire-maggots.
How does Survival Instincts work?
Survival Instincts is a tab in the Trait Panel. Every class can learn its options, and the shared unlocks and improvement pool apply to characters on the same account and server. Each character still chooses which traits to slot, so sharing progression does not force every character into the same build.

The distinction between the first character and later characters matters. Skills and Lessons have one rank. The first character on the account to finish the short tutorial unlocks the basic Survival Instincts skills and Lessons for all characters on that server. Later characters that complete the tutorial instead add points to a shared pool; those points can be spent to improve Tactics and Enhancements. The official guide puts it this way: “Most importantly, every Survival Instinct you unlock is earned server-wide, becoming available to all your characters on that server.”
Points and targeted improvements come from several kinds of play, including cultural-group quests, landscape chests, weekly Missions, reputation barter, special encounters, instances, and the raid. Some quest rewards are points for the shared pool; others are items aimed at a particular Tactic or Enhancement. The system is intended to offer several ways to advance, rather than requiring every character to repeat the same unlock path.

Standing Stone Games has not published the names of the 16 individual Enhancements, their exact rank caps, or the point costs for improvements. Nor has it published a numerical percentage for the system’s power increase or a DPS change. It is therefore more useful to think of Survival Instincts as a set of configurable combat tools than as a fixed numeric upgrade.
Which Survival Instincts should I slot?
There is no single loadout for every fight: the right choice depends on whether you want more damage, survivability, or support. Cultural identity suggests a starting point, but all characters can learn the available kits, and you can change what you slot to suit the activity.

Choose a Skill Set for its three Draugardh skills
Each culture’s Skill Set unlocks three skills. Only one Skill Set can be active at a time, and the skills consume special items made with local resources or obtained through barter.
- Khemozel Survival instantly restores morale and adds a short period of pulsing morale restoration. Khemozel Wolf-hunters summons wolfhounds to weaken enemies. Khemozel Defence improves awareness of incoming attacks and reduces damage taken for a short time. This is the defensive and ally-focused kit.
- Scout Herbs restores open wounds over several seconds. Scout Whistle marks a ground location for a volley of arrows from scouts. Scout Strikes lets your next several skills critically strike. The Scouts of Draugardh kit emphasizes battlefield discipline, wounds, and offensive openings.
- Tetikir Cry calls down thunder and lightning against nearby targets. Tetikir Ancestors instantly restores morale and power. Tetikir Guidance increases critical damage for your next several skills. This kit combines storm damage with resource restoration and critical-hit support.
The culture descriptions are useful guides, not class restrictions: every class can learn all three Skill Sets. A character can choose one based on the needs of an encounter, provided the required consumables are available.
Use Tactics for recurring triggers
Tactics are reactive effects. You can slot three after improving the ones you want, so consider how often your character attacks, gets hit, or needs to weaken an enemy.

These are chance-based effects, so a tactic that looks strong on paper may be less useful if its triggering action is rare in your rotation. The available descriptions do not provide proc rates, making it impossible to rank the nine Tactics by expected damage or defensive value.
Pick one Lesson for a specific kind of activity
Lessons have long cooldowns and limited-duration effects, and only one can be slotted. Wulf-hounds can summon a pack of wolfhounds after skill-based attacks. Bait the Enemy can, after defeating a lesser creature, draw a more dangerous encounter—such as elite groups, a nemesis, or a greater foe—with enhanced treasure. Tetikir Insight can reveal additional treasure unique to Draugardh. These choices respectively favor combat support, deliberately riskier treasure hunts, or extra regional loot.
Use Enhancements to tune the build
You can slot four of the 16 Enhancements. Their stated functions include increasing how often Survival Instinct effects trigger, improving their potency, adding effects, and changing interactions with class abilities. Many enhance cultural skills, Lessons, or Tactics; others are triggered by the class skills you already use. Since individual Enhancement names and costs have not been published, choose from the descriptions in the Trait Panel rather than relying on an unverified online list.
Where do Survival Instincts work?
The Skill Sets are restricted to the Wolves of Mordor regions, and Lessons are used in the expansion’s lands. Standing Stone Games has also described Survival Instincts as a “region-specific skill system.” The system is not limited to open-world landscape: developer commentary says it can be used and counted in the raid as well. The raid and Instance Cluster, however, did not ship in the launch build.
The system’s skills and Lessons are therefore not a new general-purpose toolkit for every LOTRO region. Standing Stone Games has discussed the possibility of the system growing over time, but applying it in other regions is not an established live feature.

How do I upgrade gear in Wolves of Mordor?
For a geared level 160 character, the launch gear path combines Legendary Item reforging, new loot, essence upgrades, and virtue progression. The new top Legendary Item level is 570; newly acquired level 160 Adventurer lootbox and Delving gear scales to item level 567–569.
- Reforge your Legendary Items. Level 160 Legendary Items can now advance to item level 570. Standing Stone Games explicitly reminded players to reforge them so they can progress: “Legendary Items for characters at level 160 can now advance to item level 570. Don’t forget to reforge your Legendary Items!”
- Acquire the new Adventurer or Delving gear. Newly acquired level 160 gear from either source scales between item level 567 and 569. These are separate gear paths rather than a replacement for Legendary Item progression.
- Seek Soot-coated Adventurer’s Essence Boxes. They can be bartered or farmed from the Adventurer’s Quartermaster, and can also drop from Adventurer’s Steel-bound Lootboxes.
- Raise your Virtues. The Virtue cap is 104 for characters level 158 and higher. New deeds and virtue XP supplies provide ways to work toward it.
- Use new recipes and local materials where relevant. Level 151-and-higher special Tracery recipes are available through Delving barter as well as featured instances. Skill Set consumables are a separate local crafting or barter loop within Draugardh.
Crafters can also make new essences that enhance Survival Instincts. Instances are expected to reward special items that alter Survival Instinct skills, but Standing Stone Games says those items will help in dangerous encounters rather than be required to complete them. The raid and Instance Cluster will arrive after the initial release; as of 29 October 2026, no calendar date had been announced.
What other ability changes arrived with Update 50?
Update 50 also changes class abilities independently of Survival Instincts. These adjustments matter if you play the affected classes, but they are not part of the new regional progression system.
- Lore-master: Ancient Master charges are now an active choice to spend. Using the skill, which has a one-second cooldown, consumes one charge and empowers all empowered skills. After an empowered skill is used, skills return to normal until another charge is spent. Charges are earned after five critical hits, down from six, and yellow-line Call to the Valar grants five charges when activated.
- Burglar: Burgle now works on trolls and giants as well as evil men and orcs.
- Warden: Entering mounted combat while in Red Dawn stance no longer swaps fire and light oils out for Rohirrim skills.
Standing Stone Games characterized the Lore-master change as making Ancient Master an “active player choice to spend charges.” In practical terms, the player now decides when to cash in a charge rather than having its effect operate as an automatic consequence of earning it.

Collector’s Improved Expedition Supplies include five Reputation Acceleration Tomes, a Virtue XP Accelerator, five 100% XP Accelerators, and a Rare Crafting Component x5 Selection Box. Neighbours are a parallel housing and relationship feature, not a substitute for combat progression. Each has 20 personality traits and a dynamic mood system, and friendship develops through stories, gifts, and daily missions. Neighbour missions now grant a scout-summon skill, while Neighbour board missions count toward weekly Mission quests. The expansion’s Quest Pack, planned for April 2027, is listed at 2,995 LOTRO Points; individual Neighbours are planned for 1,495 points each. The Quest Pack is intended to cover quests, deeds, Missions, Instances, and the new epic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my Survival Instincts missing from saved trait configurations?
Update 50 has a known display issue: current and available trait configurations may not appear on the Survival Instincts Panel even though the equipped Survival Instinct traits still swap with saved configurations. The display problem does not mean the saved traits failed to change.
Can I see the Draugardh maps in the Show Map menu?
The Update 50 notes list missing Draugardh maps in the Show Map dropdown as a launch issue. The absence from that menu does not change the region’s availability.
Will my older Neighbour progress transfer to a new world?
Progress from the Angmar and Mordor worlds is slated to transfer in November 2026. Transfers from other worlds were still being worked on, with no further schedule specified.
