The Lord of the Rings Online: The Wolves of Mordor is a paid expansion for the existing free-to-play MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO), not a new standalone sequel to Shadow of Mordor. It adds a post-Sauron story in Draugardh, three publisher-announced regions, were-wolves, the Survival Instincts progression system and the housing-focused Neighbours feature. By contrast, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War are separate Talion action games, Return to Moria is a survival-and-crafting expedition, and Tales of the Shire is a cosy Hobbit life simulator.
That distinction determines what you must buy, whether your existing character carries over, and which gameplay loop you will get. LOTRO’s base game advertises free online play with no required monthly fee, while Enad Global 7 stated a US-dollar expansion price range of $39.99–$129.99 in its October 29, 2026 announcement.

Is Wolves of Mordor a new game or a LOTRO expansion?
It is an expansion to LOTRO. Enad Global 7 describes it as the MMORPG’s 14th expansion, developed by Standing Stone Games, a Daybreak Games studio. You add it to the ongoing LOTRO world and develop a LOTRO hero; you do not start a separate Talion-style campaign.

That also explains why buying Shadow of Mordor or Shadow of War does not grant access. Those games are separate products with separate characters, progression and save data. Ownership of either Shadow title is not identified as an expansion entitlement for LOTRO.
EG7’s release announcement was dated October 29, 2026, at 08:00 CET and identified the expansion as released by that date. The announcement alone does not establish the exact first-playable minute or whether every region opened simultaneously, so a retailer or launcher can still show a different local availability time.
What does Wolves of Mordor add to LOTRO?
The expansion moves the story beyond the familiar parts of Mordor after Sauron’s defeat. Its new setting is Draugardh, where players meet were-wolves, explore three new regions and follow a new epic storyline. “Three new regions” is the feature count stated by the publisher; an independently verified region-by-region guide is not available, so names, maps and quest order should be checked in the live game rather than inferred from that number.

Survival Instincts changes progression, not the genre
Survival Instincts is a character-progression customization system. The official announcement does not define it as hunger, weather, shelter or survival crafting. If you want the resource pressure and base construction associated with a survival game, this feature should not be treated as a promise of that format.
Neighbours belongs to housing and relationships
Neighbours is tied to LOTRO housing. Its activities involve stories, gifts and daily missions that build relationships. They are not described as recruitable combat followers, and they should not be confused with the orc followers and army systems in Shadow of War.
LOTRO’s September update notes said Neighbours arrived with pre-purchase. That means the system’s availability was announced in an earlier update window, rather than necessarily debuting only on EG7’s October 29 announcement date.
Is Wolves of Mordor the same as Shadow of Mordor?
No. The similar words refer to different games and different design goals. Shadow of Mordor is a standalone, Talion-centred action game built around stealth, melee combat and personalized rivalries with orc captains. Shadow of War is its sequel and expands that formula with domination, army building and fortress conquest.

LOTRO instead supplies persistent online-MMO progression, a shared world, quests and social systems. Wolves of Mordor’s were-wolves are story enemies in Draugardh; they are not the Nemesis System’s procedurally personalized orc rivals.
What happened to the Shadow games’ connected features?
WB Games announced that specific connected features in Shadow of Mordor would end on December 31, 2020: Nemesis Forge, Vendetta missions and connected leaderboards. That notice is not evidence that the complete single-player game stopped working, and it says nothing about Wolves of Mordor having a Nemesis System. Treat the shutdown as a limitation on named online services, not as a change to LOTRO’s expansion status.
How do the gameplay loops differ?
The clearest choice is the activity you want to repeat. The following breakdown keeps publisher-described features separate from assumptions about how much content or difficulty each game provides.
Wolves of Mordor and LOTRO: persistent MMO progression
Choose Wolves of Mordor when you want to keep advancing an existing LOTRO hero, quest in an online world and add a new post-Sauron chapter to that character’s journey. Draugardh exploration, the were-wolf storyline, Survival Instincts and housing relationships are the documented additions. The expansion is content for LOTRO, not a replacement client with a self-contained campaign.
Shadow of Mordor: stealth and rivalries
Choose Shadow of Mordor for a solo action structure in which Talion fights, sneaks and develops rivalries with orc captains. The Nemesis System is the defining distinction supplied by the comparison material: captains can become recurring personal antagonists in ways that do not exist in the LOTRO expansion’s documented systems.
Shadow of War: action plus an army
Choose Shadow of War if you want the first game’s combat foundation combined with domination, recruited followers, army building and fortress assaults. Those recruited orcs are a combat and conquest system; they are not the housing Neighbours feature.
Return to Moria: survival, mining and construction
Return to Moria is a distinct Dwarf-focused game playable through solo and online-cooperative expeditions. Its loop is resource management: mine, gather, craft, build a base and explore a procedurally generated Moria. North Beach Games describes players joining forces to survive, craft, build and explore the mines. This is the appropriate choice if “survival” means supplies, tools and construction, rather than LOTRO’s Survival Instincts progression customization.

Tales of the Shire: everyday Hobbit life
Tales of the Shire is a separate cosy life simulation. Its documented activities include gardening, fishing, cooking, decorating, sharing meals and building relationships in the Shire. Choose it when you want a lower-pressure domestic routine instead of Draugardh’s were-wolf danger, MMO advancement or the Shadow games’ combat.
| Game | Format and player focus | Principal activities | Why choose it instead of Wolves of Mordor? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wolves of Mordor / LOTRO | Paid addition to a free-to-play ongoing online MMORPG | Draugardh regions, epic were-wolf storyline, Survival Instincts and Neighbours | You want more of your LOTRO hero and its MMO world |
| Shadow of Mordor / Shadow of War | Separate Talion-led action games | Stealth, combat, Nemesis rivalries; Shadow of War adds domination, armies and fortresses | You want a solo action campaign and personalized orc enemies |
| Return to Moria | Dwarf-focused solo or cooperative survival game | Mining, resource management, crafting, base-building and procedural exploration | You want survival systems and construction |
| Tales of the Shire | Separate cosy Hobbit life simulation | Gardening, fishing, cooking, decorating, meals and relationships | You want gentle, everyday Shire activities |
Is Wolves of Mordor free, and what do I have to buy?
The parent LOTRO game advertises “Free Online Play: No monthly fees required” on its Steam description. That statement applies to the base MMORPG; it does not make the Wolves of Mordor expansion free.
EG7’s October 29, 2026 announcement gives the expansion a US-dollar price range of $39.99 to $129.99. The range is attributed to that dated publisher announcement, not a permanent universal price or a guarantee that every package has the same contents. Prices, editions and regional taxes can change, so check the current LOTRO store listing before paying.
Steam lists a required Standing Stone Games account. In practical terms, a new player needs the LOTRO client, an account and a way to purchase or activate the expansion. The available official material does not establish a required character level, a specific earlier expansion, or a mandatory quest chain for entering Draugardh. Do not buy on the assumption that an unverified level or ownership requirement applies.
A cautious purchase sequence
- Create or confirm the LOTRO account. Use the account associated with the LOTRO installation; a Shadow-series account or save is not a substitute.
- Install and launch the base game. Confirm that the launcher can sign in and that your intended region and platform are supported.
- Read the current Wolves of Mordor package description. Compare the live contents and price with EG7’s dated $39.99–$129.99 announcement rather than treating the range as a current checkout quote.
- Check the Draugardh access rules shown in the live account or store interface. The public material summarized here does not specify a level or prior-expansion gate.
- Purchase only after confirming the account and edition. A LOTRO expansion purchase should be attached to the LOTRO account; it will not add content to Shadow of Mordor or Shadow of War.
Can I play Wolves of Mordor without already playing LOTRO?
You cannot treat it as an independent game: Wolves of Mordor is content inside LOTRO and uses a LOTRO account and client. A new player can begin with the free parent game, but the accessible announcements do not say whether a fresh character can enter Draugardh immediately, what level is required, or which earlier content must be owned.

These are not interchangeable versions of one game. The first is an expansion purchase tied to LOTRO; the next two are standalone action games; Return to Moria is a survival-building game; and Tales of the Shire is a life simulation.
Are there physical editions of Wolves of Mordor?
No physical Wolves of Mordor edition is documented in the material available for this comparison. The physical products that are documented are editions of the separate Tales of the Shire.

If a listing uses the phrase “Tales of the Shire PS5 physical game,” read the title and platform carefully. Similar Lord of the Rings branding does not make it a Wolves of Mordor edition or an access key for the MMO expansion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do some sources say LOTRO launched in 2007 and others say 2012?
They are dates for different events. EG7 dates the original LOTRO launch to April 2007, while the Steam storefront dates its own LOTRO release to June 6, 2012. The two dates are not necessarily contradictory: one describes the game’s original launch and the other describes its Steam storefront arrival.
Likewise, September update notes and the October 29, 2026 EG7 announcement describe different stages of Wolves of Mordor’s rollout. The records support saying the publisher had announced the expansion as released by October 29, but they do not prove an exact first-playable day for every player or region.

What should you remember before buying?
- Wolves of Mordor is LOTRO’s 14th expansion, not a new Shadow of Mordor sequel.
- It requires the LOTRO ecosystem and a Standing Stone Games account; Shadow ownership does not substitute for that.
- Its documented additions are Draugardh, three publisher-stated regions, were-wolves, Survival Instincts and Neighbours.
- LOTRO’s base game is advertised as free online play without a required monthly fee, while the expansion is paid.
- The $39.99–$129.99 figure is EG7’s October 29, 2026 US-dollar range, so verify the current package and regional price.
- Return to Moria and Tales of the Shire solve different player needs and are not alternate editions of Wolves of Mordor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a physical disc for The Wolves of Mordor?
No physical Wolves of Mordor edition is established in the available official material. The documented PS5 and Switch physical products are for the separate Tales of the Shire, so a disc listing should not be assumed to contain LOTRO access.
Why are both 2007 and 2012 listed as LOTRO release dates?
EG7 uses April 2007 for the original LOTRO launch, while Steam lists June 6, 2012 for its storefront release. Those dates describe different distribution events rather than two conflicting launch claims.
Can a Shadow of War save or Nemesis army carry into Wolves of Mordor?
No shared save, character or army transfer is documented. The Shadow games and LOTRO are separate products, and Wolves of Mordor’s announced systems do not include the Shadow series’ Nemesis army progression.
What should a new LOTRO player verify before entering Draugardh?
Create the LOTRO account, install the base client and read the live expansion requirements shown for your character. Public announcements do not establish a universal level or earlier-expansion prerequisite, so do not rely on an unofficial number.
Does a Tales of the Shire physical copy include Wolves of Mordor?
No. The physical editions described by Wētā are the cosy Hobbit life-simulation game, with the PS5 US edition including a Bywater map and soundtrack code; they are unrelated to the LOTRO expansion.
