In Windows 11, Windows Media Player Legacy and Media Player are separate apps. Legacy is the better-documented choice for a traditional media library, playlists, CD ripping and burning, and portable-player transfers. Microsoft recommends the newer Media Player app for modern video features such as 4K. For either app, support for a particular file depends on its codecs and your Windows installation—not just its extension.
What is the difference between Windows Media Player and Media Player?
Microsoft uses Windows Media Player Legacy for the older, optional player and Media Player for the newer app. That distinction matters when following Windows 11 instructions: a page that says “Media Player” does not necessarily mean the legacy program.
The strongest documented difference is the kind of workflow each is associated with. Legacy has an explicit Microsoft feature description for library management, playlists, media details and album art, portable-player transfers, website streaming, and CD creation. Microsoft recommends the newer Media Player app for modern video features such as 4K, but the available Microsoft documentation does not establish a complete side-by-side inventory of its library tools or exact format support. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance makes that recommendation narrowly; it is not a promise that a particular 4K file will play on every device.
Which app should you use?
| If you want to… | Best-supported choice | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Organize a traditional music library, make playlists, view album art, or transfer music to a portable player | Windows Media Player Legacy | Microsoft documents these Legacy capabilities. The available sources do not establish an equivalent feature-by-feature account for the newer app. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack description lists the Legacy functions for N editions. |
| Use a player Microsoft recommends for modern video features such as 4K | Media Player | That is Microsoft’s recommendation; actual playback still depends on the file’s encoding, installed codecs, Windows build, and device. See Microsoft’s guidance. |
| Rip an audio CD or burn an audio CD, data CD, or data DVD | Windows Media Player Legacy | Microsoft documents these disc workflows for Legacy. Burning requires a recorder drive and blank media; DVD movie playback is a separate matter and is not included. See Microsoft’s CD instructions. |
| Check whether a particular file will play | Check the exact codec and your Windows installation | Neither a familiar extension nor the Windows-level codec list alone proves support in a specific app. Microsoft’s WMP 12 list is not a definitive format matrix for the newer Media Player app. Start with current Windows codec guidance. |
What library and disc features does Legacy have?
Library, playlists, and music details
Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack description for Windows 10/11 N editions lists Legacy functions including managing media in a library, creating playlists, and showing media metadata such as album art. It also lists transferring music to a portable music player and playing streaming content from a website. This is a documented inventory of Legacy capabilities, not a full comparison with the newer app. Read Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack description.

Ripping CDs and burning discs
Legacy can rip audio CDs to WMA, WAV, or MP3. When the PC is online, it can retrieve track and album information. Microsoft also documents burning audio CDs, data CDs, and data DVDs, provided the PC has a CD/DVD recorder and a blank disc. These are Legacy workflows; the cited documentation does not establish disc-burning or ripping features for the newer Media Player app. Microsoft’s burn-and-rip guide gives disc-capacity guidance: up to 80 minutes for an audio CD, about 700 MB for a data CD, and about 4.7 GB for a data DVD.
Burning a data DVD does not mean the player can play a DVD movie. Microsoft says Legacy DVD playback is not included. Check Microsoft’s Legacy and playback guidance.

Finding Legacy in Windows
Windows Media Player Legacy is an optional feature in some Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions, and availability or enablement steps vary by edition. Use the Windows feature instructions that apply to your edition rather than assuming every PC includes it. Microsoft’s current support material distinguishes the Legacy feature from the newer Media Player app. Microsoft explains the distinction and availability.
Does Media Player support MP4, FLAC, or other formats?
Microsoft’s current codec guidance describes formats supported at the Windows level, not a complete guarantee for every player, device, edition, or configuration. It lists built-in audio formats including MP3, MP2, AAC, M4A, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, WMA, 3GP, 3G2, and AMR. Its video list includes MPEG-4 (H.264), H.263, VC-1, WMV, DV, VP8, and Motion JPEG. A specific file can still fail if it uses a codec that is missing or unsupported by the app.

The cited Microsoft materials do not establish an exact, current format matrix for the newer Media Player app. So it is not safe to turn the Windows codec list into a claim that the new app supports every listed format. Likewise, Microsoft’s format inventory for Windows Media Player 12 is useful for researching that legacy version, not as a definitive list for the newer app. See Microsoft’s current Windows codec guidance. See the separate Windows Media Player 12 format list.
Why the extension is not enough
An extension such as .mp4, .avi, or .wav identifies a container or file family; it does not always identify how the audio or video inside is encoded. For example, AVI and WAV files may need different codecs depending on their contents. Microsoft also notes that MPEG-2 program streams using .mpg or .mpeg may require an additional MPEG-2 decoder. The particular app, Windows version, and installed codecs all affect playback. Microsoft’s WMP 12 format page explains these legacy-specific caveats.

Windows codec changes and optional extensions
Codec availability can differ by Windows release and device. Microsoft says AC-3 (Dolby Digital) is included in Windows versions before Windows 11 version 24H2. Starting with version 24H2, Windows no longer includes AC-3 by default; some manufacturers preinstall it, and an upgrade from an earlier Windows release retains it.
Microsoft identifies optional Store extensions for MPEG-1/MPEG-2 video, HEVC (H.265), VP9, AV1, and OGG-family formats (OGG container, Vorbis audio, and Theora video). If playback fails, first identify the file’s actual audio and video codecs and check your Windows version. Then consult Microsoft’s codec guidance to see whether an appropriate extension is available. Microsoft’s codec troubleshooting page describes these formats and the AC-3 change.

How to troubleshoot a file that will not play
- Identify the encoding, not just the extension. Check the file’s video and audio codecs; two files with the same extension may use different encodings.
- Check your Windows release. Codec availability can vary by version, including the AC-3 default change beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2.
- Check whether the needed codec is installed. Use Microsoft’s current codec guidance to see whether Windows includes it or identifies an optional extension.
- Distinguish Windows codec support from app support. A codec available in Windows does not by itself prove that a particular Media Player app, device, or configuration will play the file.
- Use the version-specific format list carefully. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player 12 page can help with Legacy compatibility questions, but it should not be treated as the newer app’s format matrix.
What the Windows Media Player 12 format list does—and does not—tell you
Microsoft’s WMP 12 page lists Windows Media formats (ASF, WMA, WMV, WM); playlist and metafile formats (ASX, WAX, WVX, WMX, WPL); DVR-MS and WMD; AVI; MPEG-related extensions; MIDI; AIFF; AU/SND; WAV; CD audio; Indeo IVF; skins; MOV; M4A; MP4-family and 3G-family extensions; AAC/ADT/ADTS; M2TS; and FLAC. Treat this as a version-specific list, not a blanket assurance about modern Windows or the newer Media Player app. See Microsoft’s WMP 12 list.
Some of the page’s notes are also tied to older software contexts. Its MOV guidance refers to QuickTime version 2.0 or earlier; its MP4-family discussion mentions dependencies on DirectShow-compatible decoder packs. Those details should not be repurposed as current setup advice for another app. The page also describes WPL dynamic playlists in the context of Windows Media Player 9 Series.
