Yes—Microsoft Defender Antivirus is good enough for many Windows 11 users. Independent 2026 testing put Defender at the top of AV-TEST’s consumer round with a perfect 18/18 score, while AV-Comparatives recorded 99.0% protection in a 400-case real-world test. Paid products still edged it in that AV-Comparatives round, but the differences were small: Kaspersky reached 99.8% and Bitdefender 99.5%.

The practical decision is therefore not simply “free versus paid.” Defender supplies strong built-in malware protection without a subscription. A paid suite becomes more compelling when you need extras such as a VPN, identity-monitoring services, password management, parental controls, cross-platform administration or broader customer support.

What did the latest independent tests actually show?

The 2026 results support a qualified yes: Defender can perform at the level of leading paid antivirus products, but no single test guarantees identical protection after every update or on every computer.

Lab and period Product and version Protection result Other results
AV-TEST, January–February 2026 Microsoft Defender Antivirus 4.18 6.0/6.0 protection; 99.7% and 100% real-world protection in January and February; 100% detection of prevalent malware in both months 6.0/6.0 performance and 6.0/6.0 usability; 18/18 total
AV-Comparatives, February–May 2026 Microsoft Defender Antivirus 4.18 396 of 400 cases blocked; four compromised; 99.0% protection; Cluster 1 Zero false positives
AV-Comparatives, February–May 2026 Kaspersky Premium 399 of 400 cases blocked; one compromised; 99.8% Paid product; false-positive result not stated here
AV-Comparatives, February–May 2026 Bitdefender Total Security 398 of 400 cases blocked; two compromised; 99.5% Paid product; false-positive result not stated here

These are results for the exact versions and test windows shown, not permanent rankings. They demonstrate that Defender is a serious security product rather than a token baseline, while also showing why a paid suite can lead in a particular round.

How did Defender score in AV-TEST?

AV-TEST evaluated 16 home-user security products on Windows 11 Professional 64-bit. The lab used current publicly available versions, default settings and its January–February 2026 testing cycle.

Defender Antivirus 4.18 received the maximum 6.0 out of 6.0 in each of AV-TEST’s three categories:

  • Protection: 6.0/6.0.
  • Performance: 6.0/6.0, indicating no penalty in that round’s performance scoring.
  • Usability: 6.0/6.0, covering issues such as false warnings and the effect of detections on normal use.

That produced a perfect 18/18 total. AV-TEST also reported 99.7% and 100% real-world protection for January and February, respectively, and 100% detection of prevalent malware in both months. The monthly percentages are useful context, but they remain measurements from that laboratory period and configuration.

What happened in AV-Comparatives’ real-world test?

AV-Comparatives tested 400 cases between February and May 2026 on Microsoft Windows. Defender blocked 396 cases and failed to prevent four compromises, producing a 99.0% protection rate and placing it in Cluster 1.

The same round shows how close the leading products were. Kaspersky Premium blocked 399 cases for 99.8%, while Bitdefender Total Security blocked 398 for 99.5%. A difference of two or three cases in a 400-case sample can change the percentage, so the table should be read as a snapshot of that round rather than a universal ordering.

Why are the four compromised cases important?

A compromised case means the test scenario reached an infected state despite the product’s available protection layers. It does not mean that 1% of every Defender user’s files will be lost. The sample, threat mix, operating-system build and product update channel all affect the outcome.

What does the false-positive result tell you?

Defender recorded zero false positives in AV-Comparatives’ accompanying false-alarm test. That is a meaningful usability signal: legitimate files and websites were not incorrectly blocked in that measurement. AV-Comparatives reported an average false-positive score of eight across the products in the test, so Defender’s result was notably clean.

Are paid antivirus programs still better in any way?

Sometimes, yes. In the February–May 2026 AV-Comparatives round, two paid products produced slightly higher protection rates than Defender. A different test period, update or threat set could narrow, erase or reverse that gap, so paying is not a guarantee of permanent superiority.

The more durable distinction is often the service bundle. A paid subscription may include features that are separate from core malware detection:

  • VPN access for privacy on untrusted networks.
  • Identity-monitoring or identity-restoration services.
  • Password management.
  • Ransomware rollback or recovery assistance.
  • Parental controls.
  • Protection and administration for several operating systems.
  • Telephone, chat or other expanded technical support.

Feature names, device limits, renewal prices and regional availability change. Check the current terms for the specific edition before buying; the independent lab scores do not establish what a subscription includes.

What does Defender protect, and what does it not prove?

Defender’s test scores cover antivirus functions such as malicious-file detection, web reputation and behavioral protection. They do not certify every part of a household’s security setup.

AV-Comparatives’ real-world methodology allows all available product layers to act, including URL blocking, cloud reputation, machine-learning detections and behavior blockers. This is closer to ordinary web use than a narrow file-scanning test, but it still cannot represent every attack path.

For example, the lab notes that URL blocking is ineffective when malware arrives through a USB drive or a local network. A strong web-test score therefore should not be interpreted as a complete guarantee against removable-media attacks, compromised network devices or unsafe actions by an account user.

Why do independent lab scores differ?

Labs use different samples, dates, operating-system images, settings and scoring rules. AV-TEST’s round involved 16 products on Windows 11 Professional 64-bit with default settings and current public builds. AV-Comparatives used 400 real-world cases, allowed cloud connectivity and updates, and included a false-alarm measurement.

Those design choices explain why one product can receive a perfect score in one report and a slightly lower percentage in another without either report being wrong. Treat each result as evidence about the tested version during the stated period, not as a lifetime promise.

Is Microsoft Defender enough for a typical Windows 11 PC?

For a Windows 11 user who wants built-in, no-subscription baseline protection, Defender is a reasonable default based on these results. It achieved the maximum AV-TEST score and a Cluster 1 result with zero false positives in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 round.

Defender is particularly suitable when you:

  • Use current Windows updates and leave Defender’s default protections enabled.
  • Download software from reputable sources and avoid pirated or modified installers.
  • Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication for important accounts.
  • Maintain offline or otherwise protected backups for irreplaceable files.
  • Do not need a paid suite’s bundled VPN, identity, password or family-management tools.

Antivirus cannot compensate for unsupported software, reused credentials, exposed remote-access services or the absence of backups. Those controls remain important regardless of which scanner you choose.

When is paying for antivirus worth it?

Payment can make sense when the added services solve a specific problem, not merely because the product advertises a higher score.

Choose a paid suite for bundled services

If you need one subscription to cover several devices and platforms, manage children’s accounts, store passwords, monitor identity risks or provide a VPN, a suite may be simpler than assembling separate tools. Compare the exact number of devices, supported operating systems and renewal terms before committing.

Choose a paid suite for a particular risk tolerance

Some readers prefer the small numerical lead a paid product achieved in a particular test. In the cited AV-Comparatives round, the difference between Defender’s 99.0% and the leaders’ 99.5% or 99.8% represented only two or three cases out of 400, but that margin may still matter to organizations or high-risk users.

Stay with Defender when the bundle has no value

If you only need malware protection on a modern Windows 11 computer, a subscription may duplicate capabilities you already have. In that situation, Defender’s built-in deployment, perfect AV-TEST score and zero false positives make it a defensible choice.

How should you compare Defender with a paid product?

Use the same criteria for both options instead of relying on a single headline score.

  1. Protection: record the test period, product version, blocked cases and compromised cases.
  2. False positives: check whether legitimate files or sites were incorrectly blocked.
  3. Performance: look for the lab’s measured impact, not a vendor’s general claim.
  4. Usability: examine warnings, setup, maintenance and recovery behavior.
  5. Features: list the VPN, identity, password, parental-control and support functions you would actually use.
  6. Coverage: verify Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and device-count limits for your household.
  7. Cost: compare the first term with the renewal price and note whether features are removed when the subscription ends.

Current pricing and renewal conditions are separate from the 2026 laboratory evidence and should be checked at the time of purchase.

What practical steps improve Defender’s protection?

Defender works best when its surrounding Windows controls are not deliberately weakened.

  1. Install Windows updates and restart when required so security components receive current fixes.
  2. Keep Defender’s real-time and cloud-delivered protection enabled unless a documented enterprise policy requires another configuration.
  3. Review Windows Security notifications instead of dismissing warnings automatically.
  4. Use standard user accounts for everyday work when practical, reserving administrator access for tasks that require it.
  5. Keep important files in a backup that malware cannot modify immediately, such as an offline copy.
  6. Scan removable drives and avoid opening unexpected attachments or installers.

These steps reduce exposure but do not turn any antivirus into a complete security guarantee.

What is the bottom-line choice for Windows users?

Defender is now demonstrably competitive with paid antivirus in independent testing. The January–February 2026 AV-TEST round gave it 18/18, and AV-Comparatives’ February–May test measured 99.0% protection with no false positives. Paid products can still post a slightly higher score in a given round and may offer services Defender does not bundle.

Use Defender as the default when you want strong, built-in Windows protection without another subscription. Pay for a suite when its additional coverage, controls or support address needs that Defender’s core antivirus does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Were the 2026 tests run with cloud access and updates enabled?

Yes. AV-Comparatives allowed cloud connectivity and product updates during its 400-case real-world test, so cloud reputation and other online layers could participate. AV-TEST evaluated current public versions with default settings, which is a different setup and one reason scores should not be merged into a single universal ranking.

Does Defender’s 99.0% result mean it will miss one attack in every 100 on my PC?

No. The figure comes from four compromised cases in a specific 400-case round. It is a sample result tied to that threat set, product build and test period, not a fixed failure rate for every future Defender installation.

Can Defender stop malware delivered by a USB drive or local network?

The cited AV-Comparatives methodology warns that URL blocking does not address malware introduced through USB or a local network. Use removable-media caution, device updates and network controls in addition to antivirus protection.

Should I install a second antivirus alongside Defender?

The lab results compare products individually, not as a recommendation to stack multiple real-time scanners. Decide first whether you need a paid suite’s added services; if you switch products, follow the vendor’s installation guidance so real-time protection is configured predictably.
