To turn Remember my preferences on or off, open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and use its switch. Expand the controls beneath it if you want to choose which supported preference categories Windows backs up. If the switch is unavailable, a work or school policy or an unavailable backup or roaming capability may be controlling it.
Where is Remember my preferences in Windows 11?
Microsoft places the control in Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. You can reach Settings from the Start menu or press Windows key + I.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Windows backup.
- Find Remember my preferences.
- Turn the switch on or off. If category controls appear beneath it, expand them to choose the preference groups you want included.
- Return to the Windows backup page and check the switch to confirm its displayed state.
Microsoft documents this Windows Backup settings path for both Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the current path to follow; the Windows 10 instructions are useful if that is the system still on your PC.
What does Remember my preferences back up?
The switch controls backup of supported Windows preferences, which Microsoft describes as settings that can be backed up and restored. It is not a promise that every setting, account detail, or credential will be saved.

The documented preference groups include:
- Accessibility
- Personalization
- Language preferences
- Other Windows settings
Depending on the supported item, settings can include choices involving themes, colors, taskbar behavior, display, input, and notifications. Expand the category controls on your own Windows backup page to see and adjust the choices available there; the exact items can vary, so do not assume that every listed example has its own switch.
Microsoft’s backup-and-restore catalog distinguishes some items from these preference categories. Accounts, Wi-Fi networks and passwords, and language dictionaries are not all handled in the same way as the supported settings categories. In particular, do not treat Remember my preferences as a guarantee that account credentials or every language-related item will sync.

How do I turn off Remember my preferences?
Use the same page and switch: Settings > Accounts > Windows backup > Remember my preferences. Turning it off stops further backup of supported preferences through this control. If the page offers category controls, you can instead leave the main switch on and narrow what is included by changing the selected groups.
On a personal PC where the control is available, the setting is a user choice. On a managed device, an administrator may restrict or disable that choice. Turning the switch off also does not, by itself, remove preference data already stored in your Microsoft account; deletion is a separate action.

Why is Remember my preferences grayed out?
Microsoft says the preference controls are actionable only when an administrator has enabled the relevant Windows settings backup or Enterprise State Roaming capability. An administrator can also apply the Do not sync policy, which disables Remember my preferences.
- On a work or school PC: Contact your IT administrator and ask whether settings backup or Enterprise State Roaming is enabled, or whether a Do not sync policy is applied. A user cannot override an enforced policy from this Settings page.
- If you use a personal PC: Check whether the device or account is managed by an organization. If it is not, Microsoft’s stated conditions still mean the switch may depend on an available backup capability; the documentation does not establish a single user-side fix for every unavailable toggle.
Some Windows Backup features also depend on account and storage context. Microsoft notes that personalization backup requires signing in to OneDrive and having available storage. That requirement concerns personalization backup; it should not be read as evidence that OneDrive storage alone will unlock a switch disabled by an administrator policy.

How do I delete settings Windows has already synced?
Switching off Remember my preferences prevents further preference backup through that setting, but removing data already stored in the cloud takes a separate step. Microsoft directs users to their Microsoft account’s Devices page, where they can find Cloud synced settings and choose the clear option.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This action concerns cloud-synced settings data. It does not delete files stored in OneDrive. If your goal is to stop future preference backup as well as remove stored settings, do both actions: turn off the Windows setting, then clear the cloud-synced settings from the account Devices page.

How do the available choices differ?
The useful distinction is between whether preference backup is enabled, how much of the supported catalog is included, and who has authority over the setting.
| Choice or context | What it means |
|---|---|
| Remember my preferences on | Backs up supported Windows preferences; category controls can narrow the included groups. |
| Remember my preferences off | Stops further backup of supported preferences through this control; it does not clear settings already stored in the cloud. |
| Selected categories | Limits preference backup to the groups selected in the controls shown beneath the main switch. |
| Personal Microsoft account | The setting can be managed by the user when the relevant controls and capabilities are available. Some features, including personalization backup, have OneDrive sign-in and available-storage requirements. |
| Managed work or school account or PC | An administrator may need to enable backup or Enterprise State Roaming; an enforced Do not sync policy disables the preference control. |
What should you check before changing the setting?
- Confirm you are on Settings > Accounts > Windows backup, rather than assuming another Windows sync control is the same setting.
- Use the category controls if you want to keep some supported preference groups backed up while excluding others.
- If the switch is disabled on a work or school device, ask the administrator about the applicable policy or capability instead of looking for a local override.
- If you want to remove data already in the cloud, plan to clear Cloud synced settings from the account Devices page separately.
- If you are using Windows 10, note that Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Remember my preferences change my settings immediately?
The control is for backing up supported Windows preferences for backup and restore; Microsoft’s description does not say that switching it changes the current theme, taskbar, or other live settings. Treat the switch as a backup choice, not as a control for applying a new desktop configuration.
Will turning off Remember my preferences delete my OneDrive files?
No. The separate cloud-settings clearing action concerns synced settings data, not files stored in OneDrive. Windows Backup settings and OneDrive file storage are distinct in this respect.

Microsoft specifically says personalization backup requires a OneDrive sign-in and available storage. That statement does not establish that every preference category has the same requirement, so check the controls and status shown for your account.
