Use the narrowest remapping layer that solves your problem: change the game first, then Steam Input or Xbox Accessories on Windows, and only then a virtual-controller tool. On Android, pair the controller, check the game’s own controls, and use Android 17’s system Game Controller settings when your phone exposes them. Running more than one mapper at once is the main cause of double input, duplicate controllers and incorrect button prompts.
This guide covers Xbox Wireless Controllers, Xbox Elite Series 2, Xbox Adaptive Controller, DualSense, DualSense Edge, DualShock 4 and generic HID pads on Windows 10/11 and Android.
Which remapping layer should you use?
Remapping can happen inside the game, in Windows hardware software, in Steam, in a virtual-controller utility or, on some premium controllers, in memory on the controller itself. Each layer has a different scope and output.
| Layer | Best for | Where it applies | Output and limitations | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game control editor | One title | That game only | Preserves native prompts, analog axes, rumble and anti-cheat expectations | Usually included with the game |
| Xbox Accessories | Xbox controllers and accessibility hardware | Windows 10/11 and Xbox consoles | Button mapping; Elite profiles and Adaptive Controller port assignments. Windows configuration requires USB-C. | Free |
| Steam Input | Steam games and non-Steam shortcuts | Per game in Steam | Native action layouts, keyboard/mouse output, gyro, activators and layers; conflicts if another mapper is also active | Free |
| DS4Windows | PlayStation pads in XInput-only Windows games | System-wide Windows profiles | Creates a virtual Xbox 360 controller through ViGEmBus; can hide the physical pad with HidHide | Free |
| reWASD | Advanced Windows keyboard/mouse layers and macros | System-wide Windows profiles | Virtual controllers, shift layers, gyro and broad hardware support; disable Steam Input for the same game | Paid; new-customer listings in 2026 started around $39.99 for lifetime access on up to three PCs |
| AntiMicroX | Free keyboard/mouse mapping | Windows, macOS and Linux | Maps controls to keyboard and mouse; no requirement for Steam | Free |
| Android system remapping | Accessibility or a consistent layout across games | Android 17 devices that expose the menu | Maps buttons, triggers, sticks and axes at system level; OEM menus vary | Built into Android 17 |
Valve describes Steam Input as “the umbrella term referring to the entire collection of software, hardware, and configuration utilities that Steam uses to interface with games.” Its Steam Input Configurator sits between the physical device and the game, translating input according to your layout. Choose one transformation layer: for example, Steam Input or DS4Windows, not both.

What do you need before remapping a controller on Windows?
Windows must enumerate the controller before any mapper can configure it. Start with a USB data cable, not a charge-only lead. USB is the quickest way to isolate Bluetooth pairing problems and is required for Xbox Accessories configuration and firmware work.
- USB: connect directly to the PC. A compatible USB-C cable is required by the Xbox Accessories Windows app; a DualSense also uses USB-C.
- Bluetooth: unplug USB while pairing so Windows does not expose ambiguous duplicate connections. Remove the old pairing and pair again if Steam never lists the pad.
- Xbox Wireless Adapter: an option for Xbox pads on PCs without Xbox Wireless radio.
Press Win+R, enter joy.cpl, and confirm that Windows lists the device. Device Manager or a PowerShell HID listing can also show enumeration. A DualSense commonly appears as Wireless Controller; an “OK” status proves only that Windows sees a HID device, not that a particular game has mapped it.
In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Device Inputs. Test the sticks, triggers and every button before changing a layout. The Xbox Wireless Controller is officially listed for Xbox consoles, Windows PC, Android and iOS, using Xbox Wireless or Bluetooth. Sony lists DualSense connection by USB Type-C or Bluetooth for Windows PC, Mac, Android and iOS; haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on PC depend on the game and may require USB.
How do I remap controls inside a Windows game?
Open the title’s Settings, Controls, Controller or Accessibility editor, select an action and press the desired control. Save the profile, then test in a menu or practice area. This is the preferred route because the game keeps its native button prompts, analog behavior, rumble and anti-cheat assumptions.
- Change one action at a time so an accidental duplicate bind is easy to identify.
- Use the game’s “reset to default” command if a bind becomes unreachable.
- Fully relaunch a title that reads controller bindings only during startup.
- If the game has no assignment for the action you need, move up one layer to Steam Input or Xbox Accessories.
How do I use Xbox Accessories to remap an Xbox controller on Windows?
Xbox Accessories is Microsoft’s official Windows 10/11 utility for the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. It is not an official Android, iOS, macOS or SteamOS app. Microsoft’s product documentation says button mapping is available through Xbox Accessories on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11, and that the Windows app requires a compatible USB-C cable.
- Install Xbox Accessories from the Microsoft Store and sign in.
- Connect the controller by USB-C. Accept a firmware update if offered; keep the PC awake until flashing finishes.
- Select the controller, choose Configure, and create a named profile instead of overwriting Default.
- Open Mapping. Select a control, choose Primary, pick the new function and select OK. Repeat for bumpers, triggers, the D-pad and paddles where supported.
- Save the profile. On an Elite Series 2, store it in an onboard slot, then use the controller’s Profile button to switch profiles.
What extra controls does Elite Series 2 provide?
Microsoft says Elite Series 2 stores up to three custom profiles plus one default profile on the controller. Those profiles remain available on another compatible device without signing in to the Microsoft account. The controller has an internal rechargeable battery rated by Microsoft for up to 40 hours per charge. The app also exposes stick-sensitivity curves, hair-trigger locks and paddle assignments; physical thumbstick tension is adjusted with the included hardware tool and has three settings.

How is Xbox Adaptive Controller configured?
Xbox Accessories can remap Adaptive Controller buttons and ports, including keyboard keys and mouse functions. On Windows, the Configure page is disabled over Xbox Wireless or Bluetooth, so connect USB-C to edit mappings; after saving, you can use the setup wirelessly.

How do I remap buttons with Steam Input per game?
Steam Input is the practical Windows choice when you play through Steam, especially with a DualSense in an XInput-only game or when you need keyboard, mouse, gyro or layered actions.
- Open Steam > Settings > Controller and enable support for the relevant family: Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or Generic. A disabled family toggle can make layout edits appear to do nothing.
- In Library, right-click the game, open Properties > Controller, and choose Override: Use default, Enable Steam Input or Disable Steam Input.
- Open the game’s controller icon and select Edit Layout. Desktop layouts are per game; Steam Deck uses the controller icon on the game page.
- Edit buttons, sticks, triggers, trackpad, gyro or action sets, then apply the layout and test in a safe area.
Native Steam Input API titles use named actions such as Jump or Reload. Legacy mode binds physical controls to other controls, keyboard keys or mouse movement. Activators can distinguish regular, long, double and release presses; action-set layers can turn a held bumper into a mouse layer. Community layouts are reached in late-2026 desktop builds through Library > controller icon > Edit Layout > Current Button Layout > Community Layouts.
Valve’s stable client update of 13 October 2026 redesigned the configurator for API games, adding a multi-binding editor, compatibility labels, inverted button chords and a controller-reordering dialog. Labels can move between releases, but the per-game layout is the constant.

Should Steam Input be enabled for a native DualSense game?
Disable it when the title already supports DualSense directly and Steam is double-reading the pad. Enabling Steam Input can translate a DualSense into an emulated Xbox device, which may replace PlayStation glyphs and native haptics.
How do I use DS4Windows to make a PlayStation controller work on Windows?
DS4Windows is for DualShock 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge owners whose non-Steam game understands only Microsoft XInput. It creates a virtual Xbox 360 controller through ViGEmBus and supports per-game profiles, button remapping, gyro-to-mouse and optional HidHide concealment of the physical device. It is not required for normal DualSense support in Steam.
- Use a current 3.x build from the maintained Ryochan7 lineage; the original Jays2Kings repository has been dormant since late 2023. The 3.5-series build dated 17 February 2026 uses ViGEmBus and the .NET Desktop Runtime. The maintained project publishes through ds4windows.io.
- Extract the program and run
DS4Windows.exe. - Install ViGEmBus when prompted. Install the .NET Desktop Runtime if requested; HidHide is optional.
- Connect by USB or Bluetooth. For a DualShock 4-class pairing, hold PS and Share until the light begins pairing.
- Confirm that DS4Windows exposes one virtual Xbox 360 pad, then select or create a profile.
Do not enable Steam Input for the same title while DS4Windows is active. Valve notes that, with an external remapper, Steam interfaces with the emulated Xbox 360 controller instead of the original PlayStation pad. Emulation also removes DualSense adaptive-trigger and haptic features that a game could use natively.

When are reWASD or AntiMicroX better than Steam Input?
Use a dedicated Windows mapper when you need keyboard/mouse output in non-Steam software, always-on profiles, or complex shift layers. reWASD supports Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and many generic controllers, with virtual controllers, macros, gyro, Elite paddles and DualSense adaptive-trigger or haptic passthrough. Version 9.5.0 shipped in August 2026; new-customer listings reported a one-time purchase from about €34.99/$39, with lifetime access later listed from $39.99 for up to three PCs.
AntiMicroX is the free Windows/macOS/Linux alternative for straightforward keyboard and mouse bindings. JoyToKey is shareware with automatic profile switching, while x360ce remains a niche option for pre-XInput PC games. If reWASD and Steam Input both map the same pad, disable Steam Input for that game and restart it.
Why is my controller producing double input on Windows?
Double input almost always means the physical pad and a virtual copy are both reaching the game, or two remappers are translating the same event.

For a controller that is not detected, change the cable, USB port or Bluetooth pairing before changing software. Update firmware only through Xbox Accessories or PlayStation Accessories. Virtual devices may be blocked or flagged by competitive anti-cheat; use the game’s own remapper or native Steam Input where permitted. Stick drift is hardware: increasing a deadzone in Steam, DS4Windows or reWASD is only a workaround.
How do I pair an Xbox or DualSense controller with Android?
Android has supported a wide range of game controllers since API level 9 (Android 2.3 Gingerbread). Both Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Controller and Sony’s DualSense are officially listed for Android.
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode, then open Settings > Connected devices and select the controller. Menu names differ by manufacturer.
- Alternatively, connect through USB-OTG with a data-capable cable.
- Open the game’s controller settings and bind controls there first.
- If the game has no editor, check Android’s Game Controller settings before installing an overlay mapper.
Xbox Accessories does not run on Android, so Elite profiles must be created on Windows or an Xbox first. Once saved onboard, those profiles can be used on compatible mobile devices. A Nintendo Switch console remap does not travel with a Pro Controller to Windows or Android; reconfigure on each host.

Android 17 introduced system-level remapping in beta during 2026. Android Authority reported the feature on 7 April 2026, and August 2026 guides documented the menus. Availability depends on the phone’s Android build and OEM skin.
- For a wired pad, open Settings > System > Game Controller (some phones show Game controllers > Controller Settings).
- For Bluetooth, open Settings > Connected devices, select the controller and choose Game Controller Settings.
- Select the control to edit. The beta interface exposes face buttons, L1/R1, L2/R2, L3/R3, D-pad directions and left/right stick keys or axes.
- Save the mapping and test it in more than one game.
Google’s documented options include swapping two buttons and swapping the left and right joysticks. OEMs may hide or rename the page, and Google’s beta caveat says some controllers can show incorrect glyphs even when the remap works. Android internally normalizes DualSense controls to Xbox-style keycodes: X to A, Circle to B, Triangle to Y and Square to X.

How can I control a touch-only Android game with a gamepad?
Overlay mappers place virtual touches over on-screen controls. They are a last resort for games with no native gamepad support, not a replacement for Android’s system remapper.
One Google Play example, Game Controller Mapper by LevelPulse, listed 5K+ downloads and an update on 3 October 2026. Its listing claims support for Xbox One/Series, DualShock 4, DualSense and generic HID controllers, per-game profiles and no root, using wireless debugging for setup. Wireless debugging grants substantial control to the pairing computer, so enable it only temporarily, use a trusted network, remove the pairing afterward and avoid it for sensitive devices.
Which controller hardware can store a remap?
Hardware profiles are useful when you move between Windows, Android and consoles or need accessibility controls without installing software on every host.

- Xbox Adaptive Controller: external switches and ports configured in Xbox Accessories over USB on Windows.
- Standard Xbox Wireless Controller: Xbox Accessories button mapping, but no Elite-style paddles or three custom onboard slots. Microsoft rates its AA batteries for up to 40 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remap an Xbox controller on Android with Xbox Accessories?
No. Xbox Accessories is a Windows 10/11 and Xbox-console utility, not an Android app. Create Elite profiles on Windows or console, save them to the controller, then use the stored profile on a compatible Android device.
Why does my DualSense show Xbox button prompts on a PC?
Steam Input or DS4Windows may be presenting a virtual XInput/Xbox 360 device to the game. Disable the extra translation layer and use the game’s native DualSense mode when available; otherwise Xbox prompts are expected.
Will a controller remap follow me from a Nintendo Switch to Windows?
No. A Switch console’s remap is host-specific and is not stored as a portable profile on the Pro Controller for Windows or Android. Recreate the layout in the new host’s game or remapping tool.
Is Android 17 remapping available on every phone?
Not yet. The feature was documented in Android 17 beta and menu names or availability depend on the OEM build. If Game Controller settings are missing, use the game’s own controls rather than assuming the controller is defective.
