Microsoft Customer Lockbox adds a customer approval gate when Microsoft support needs access to tenant content to resolve a service issue. Windows 365 is among the services Microsoft currently lists as supported. A designated customer approver can approve or deny a request, and approved access ends when its temporary elevation period expires.

What Windows 365 Customer Lockbox controls

Customer Lockbox applies to exceptional Microsoft support access for service operations—not routine Cloud PC sign-in or an administrator’s own access. When a support engineer determines that access to tenant content is necessary to address a service issue, the engineer submits a request. With the control enabled, Microsoft says it cannot access content for service operations without the organization’s explicit approval. See Microsoft’s Customer Lockbox documentation.

This is an approval control over the support-access workflow, not a blanket guarantee that no Microsoft personnel can ever access any information under any circumstances. The documented scope is access to content for service operations through Customer Lockbox requests.

How a request and approval work

A request is associated with a service request and identifies the tenant, service request number, expected start time, estimated access duration, and service. Customer approvers review requests in the Microsoft 365 admin center and choose whether to approve or deny them.

  1. Microsoft support identifies a need. If resolving a service issue requires access to content, the support engineer submits a Customer Lockbox request.
  2. An approver reviews the request. The organization’s approver checks the case and request details in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  3. The approver decides. The approver may approve or deny the request. Approval permits temporary elevated access; it is not open-ended authorization.
  4. Access expires. Approved access is revoked when the elevation period ends.

The approval decision and request details provide governance evidence that an organization can use in its oversight and audit processes.

Which services are listed as supported?

Microsoft’s current Customer Lockbox documentation lists these services as supported:

  • Exchange Online
  • SharePoint Online
  • OneDrive
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Windows 365

That establishes Windows 365 as within the documented service scope; it does not mean every kind of data or every support interaction is described as covered. The control concerns requests for access to content for service operations.

Does Customer Lockbox require E5?

Microsoft says Customer Lockbox is included with Microsoft 365 E5 and Office 365 E5. It is also available through compliance add-ons for some other plans. Government customers receive it with Microsoft 365 G5 or Office 365 G5. Eligibility depends on the organization’s plan and applicable terms, so check Microsoft’s current Customer Lockbox licensing guidance or confirm with Microsoft or an authorized reseller before purchasing or changing licenses.

When did Microsoft launch it for Windows 365?

Microsoft’s older announcements document Customer Lockbox’s Office 365 rollout, not a distinct Windows 365 launch date. In an April 21, 2015 announcement, Microsoft said it planned to bring Office 365 customers into the approval loop for engineer access. A February 25, 2016 progress report said Customer Lockbox for Exchange Online was generally available and that SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business support would begin rolling out in early Q2 2016. Neither announcement establishes when Windows 365 support began, so a precise Windows 365 launch date cannot be confirmed from those sources.

What Customer Lockbox does—and does not—prove

The feature creates a specific approval decision and an audit trail around covered support access. That can support an organization’s governance process, but enabling Customer Lockbox by itself does not establish compliance with any particular regulation. Treat it as one control among the organization’s broader security and compliance measures, including identity and encryption protections.
