To change the save prompt, open Snipping Tool, choose See more (the three-dot button), select Settings, and switch Ask to save edited screenshots on or off. The preference takes effect immediately; there is no separate Save button for the setting itself.

Turn it On if you want Snipping Tool to ask before closing an edited capture. Turn it Off if you prefer to close the editor without that confirmation. This control affects edited work only, not the separate option that automatically saves the original capture.

How do I turn “Ask to save edited screenshots” on or off?

The complete path is Snipping Tool > See more (three dots) > Settings. The toggle is in the Snipping section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch the app. You can also press Windows + Shift + S to open the capture overlay, then open the Snipping Tool window from there.
  2. In the Snipping Tool window, select See more, shown as three dots in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Scroll to the Snipping section and locate Ask to save edited screenshots.
  5. Set the switch to On to receive a save confirmation when you close an edited screenshot, or set it to Off to stop using that confirmation prompt.
  6. Close the Settings page. The next edited capture uses the new behavior.

The change is stored by Snipping Tool as soon as you move the switch. Closing Settings, restarting the computer, or pressing another Save button is not required.

What happens when the setting is turned on?

With the switch on, Snipping Tool treats an edited capture that is still open in its editor as work that may need a decision before the editor closes. If you have drawn on, cropped, highlighted, or otherwise changed the image, the app asks whether to save when you attempt to close it.

Why the confirmation is useful

  • It gives you a final chance to keep annotations or other edits that have not yet been written to a file.
  • It helps prevent an accidental close from discarding work, particularly when several screenshots are open in succession.
  • It makes the close action deliberate: you can save, decline to save, or cancel closing if you clicked the close control by mistake.

The prompt concerns the edited item currently open in the editor. It is not a general Windows warning for every image file and it does not change how other photo applications handle their documents.

What happens when the setting is turned off?

With the switch off, Snipping Tool does not use that save-confirmation behavior in the same way when an edited capture is closed. This reduces an interruption in a rapid screenshot workflow, but it also removes that extra decision point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Off is convenient

  • You capture many temporary images and usually close them without keeping the annotations.
  • You already save deliberately with the Save command and do not want a second prompt during cleanup.
  • You are working through a repeatable process where closing the editor is the normal end of each capture.

What turning it off does not do

  • It does not erase screenshots that are already saved.
  • It does not disable the editor’s Save or Save as commands.
  • It does not change the folder used for automatically saved original captures.

If an edited image matters, save it before closing even when the confirmation switch is off. The setting controls the prompt, not whether your edits deserve a file.

Is “Ask to save edited screenshots” the same as automatic saving?

No. The two controls apply at different points in the capture process. The table below shows which action each preference governs.

Snipping Tool option Applies to What it controls Typical location
Ask to save edited screenshots An edited capture that remains open in the editor Whether Snipping Tool asks for a save decision when you close that edited work See more > Settings, in the Snipping section
Automatically save original screenshots The newly captured, unedited snip Whether a file is created automatically for the original capture and which default folder is used See more > Settings, in the automatic-save settings

Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window, where you can make changes, save, and share it. Automatic saving of the original capture therefore does not mean that every later edit is silently saved to the same file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I save an edited screenshot before closing?

You can save intentionally regardless of the prompt preference. After the capture opens in the editor, use the toolbar’s Save button or press Ctrl + S.

  1. Finish your markup, crop, highlight, or other edits.
  2. Select Save, or press Ctrl + S to save to the current file context.
  3. When you need a different filename or destination, choose Save as and select the folder and file name.
  4. Close the editor after the file operation completes.

Save is for deliberate updates to the current image. Save as is the safer choice when you want to preserve an original and create a separately named edited copy. Microsoft documents both commands for Snipping Tool’s editor.

Why does Snipping Tool ask me to save when I close it?

The app is warning that the screenshot in the editor contains work that may not have been saved as a file. The behavior is expected when Ask to save edited screenshots is enabled and you close an edited capture.

What to choose at the prompt

  • Choose the save option when the annotations or other changes must be retained.
  • Choose the option to discard or close without saving when the image is temporary and you no longer need the edits.
  • Cancel the close action if you reached it accidentally or still need to inspect the image.

If the prompt appears after every edit and slows you down, switch the preference off. If you have lost work by closing too quickly, switch it on and use the confirmation as a safeguard.

Your workflow Recommended switch Reason
You annotate instructions, evidence, or work documents and need to keep the result On The close confirmation adds a last check before edited work is closed.
You capture disposable images and close most of them immediately Off Removing the confirmation makes repeated captures and cleanup faster.
You alternate between temporary and important screenshots On, with deliberate use of Save or Save as The prompt provides a safety net while manual saving handles the images you need to keep.

There is no separate “save automatically after editing” switch described by this preference. If your goal is to ensure every annotation is written to a file without a prompt, use the editor’s Save command as part of your workflow and verify the resulting file.

What is the quickest way to open Snipping Tool?

For a new capture, press Windows + Shift + S. Windows displays the capture overlay, where you can select the capture mode and area; the resulting snip is then copied into Snipping Tool for editing, saving, or sharing.

If you need to change the preference itself, launch the full Snipping Tool app from Start. The Settings page and the three-dot See more menu are available in the app window, not in the small capture overlay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical capture-to-save sequence

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S and select the area or capture mode.
  2. Open the resulting snip in Snipping Tool if the editor is not already visible.
  3. Make the required edits.
  4. Use Ctrl + S or Save as when you need a file.
  5. Close the editor. If the prompt is on, respond to the save confirmation; if it is off, closing proceeds without that same confirmation behavior.

What should I do if the toggle is missing?

Snipping Tool’s labels and controls can vary by app version. If Ask to save edited screenshots is not shown, update Snipping Tool through Microsoft Store, then reopen the app and check See more > Settings again.

  1. Close any open Snipping Tool editor windows.
  2. Open Microsoft Store from Start.
  3. Open the Store’s updates area and check for an available Snipping Tool update.
  4. Install the update, then launch Snipping Tool again.
  5. Open See more > Settings and look in the Snipping section.

A current Windows 11 how-to guide also recommends checking Microsoft Store updates when this control is absent: the troubleshooting steps are available here. Menu names can change as Microsoft updates the app, so compare the wording in your installed version rather than assuming an older screenshot of the Settings page matches your screen.

If updating does not help

  • Make sure you opened the current Snipping Tool app, not only the capture overlay.
  • Close and relaunch the app after the update; a previously open window may still display the old settings interface.
  • Search the Settings page carefully for the Snipping section, because the switch may be lower than the first group of options.
  • Use the Save command manually while the setting is unavailable, so important edits are written to a file before you close the editor.

Can I change the preference while an edited screenshot is open?

You can open Snipping Tool settings while working, but the safest workflow is to save any important edits first, change the preference, and then continue with a fresh capture. The new switch value is intended for subsequent close actions; it should not be treated as a substitute for saving the image already on screen.

Safe sequence for changing it during work

  1. Press Ctrl + S or use Save as for the open edited capture if you need to keep it.
  2. Open See more > Settings.
  3. Change Ask to save edited screenshots.
  4. Return to the editor and continue, remembering that the prompt setting affects how closing is handled.

What are the common mistakes with this setting?

  • Changing the wrong option: Automatic saving of original screenshots and the edited-screenshot prompt are separate controls. Select the exact label that matches the result you want.
  • Expecting Off to save edits: Turning off the prompt removes or changes the confirmation behavior; it is not an automatic edited-file backup.
  • Closing before saving: If the edits matter, use Save or Save as first instead of relying solely on a prompt.
  • Looking in Windows Settings: The control is inside the Snipping Tool app under its three-dot menu, not a general Windows privacy or display setting.
  • Using an old menu path: App updates can move or rename controls. Check Microsoft Store updates when the wording or location does not match these steps.

How can I verify that the change worked?

Take a test snip, make a small visible edit, and then close the editor. With the switch on, you should receive the save confirmation for the edited work. With it off, that confirmation should not be used in the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After testing, save the image if you need to keep it. A test confirms the prompt behavior, but it does not prove that an edited capture was written to a permanent file unless you use Save or Save as and check the destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing this option alter screenshots I already saved?

No. The preference controls how Snipping Tool handles closing edited work in the app; it does not rename, move, delete, or rewrite image files that already exist. Existing files continue to use their current names and locations.

Where are original screenshots saved automatically?

When automatic saving of original captures is enabled, Snipping Tool uses the Screenshots folder by default. The automatic-save control and its default folder can be changed from the app’s See more menu and Settings page.

Is the Windows + Shift + S shortcut the same as changing this preference?

No. Windows + Shift + S opens the capture overlay so you can take a snip quickly. The save-prompt preference is changed in the full Snipping Tool window under See more and Settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the prompt still appears after I switched it off?

Close and reopen Snipping Tool, then confirm that the switch remains Off in the Snipping section. If the control is missing or the interface behaves differently after an update, check Microsoft Store for a newer Snipping Tool version before testing again.
