To keep OneDrive warning you before a cloud deletion, leave the OneDrive delete reminder enabled and do not select Don’t show this reminder again when the prompt appears. To stop the reminder for a normal user, select that option in a OneDrive delete-confirmation dialog. This warning is separate from Files On-Demand: the latter controls whether files occupy local disk space, not whether OneDrive asks before deleting them.
If you need a warning for every local File Explorer deletion, configure Windows 11’s separate ConfirmFileDelete policy. For managed PCs, administrators can enforce confirmations for the first cloud deletion, shared-content deletion, and large batches of synchronized-file deletions. The correct setting depends on whether the warning should protect only this PC or the entire OneDrive account.
What does a OneDrive delete warning protect?
A OneDrive warning can indicate that a deletion is a cloud operation rather than a local housekeeping action. Microsoft states that deleting an online-only file from a device deletes it from OneDrive on all devices and online. The item may disappear from other synchronized computers, phones, and the OneDrive website, so the warning gives you a chance to cancel before synchronization propagates the change.

How do I turn OneDrive delete warnings on or off?
There is no ordinary OneDrive setting that acts like a permanent on/off switch for every delete prompt. A user normally controls the reminder from the prompt itself, while an administrator can control specific warning categories with OneDrive policies.
Keep warnings enabled
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area. If it is hidden, select the notification-area arrow first.
- Select Help and Settings, then select Settings. This opens the current OneDrive settings interface.
- When OneDrive displays a delete-confirmation dialog, leave the reminder enabled. If the dialog includes Don’t show this reminder again, do not select it.
- Cancel the operation if you are unsure whether the item is online-only, shared, or synchronized to other devices. Check the item’s status in File Explorer or on the OneDrive website before trying again.
With the reminder left active, OneDrive continues to show the applicable warning when its trigger is met. The exact wording and the point at which the dialog appears can vary by sync-app build and account type.
Stop the user reminder
- Start a deletion that would normally produce OneDrive’s confirmation dialog.
- Select Don’t show this reminder again in that dialog, then confirm the deletion if you still want to proceed.
- Close and reopen the OneDrive settings window if you want to verify that the sync client is running normally. The suppression is associated with the OneDrive client’s reminder behavior, not with Files On-Demand storage status.
If you already suppressed the reminder, wait for the next applicable OneDrive confirmation prompt. Clear the suppression option when it is offered. Microsoft’s wording can differ between sync-app builds, so an old instruction that names a particular checkbox or menu may not match your installed client.
Why doesn’t Files On-Demand turn delete warnings on or off?
Files On-Demand changes where file contents are stored; it does not control delete-confirmation behavior. In current OneDrive settings, the relevant storage actions are Free up disk space and Download all files.
What the status icons mean
- Online-only: the file’s contents are in the cloud and a local placeholder is shown. Opening it downloads the contents when needed.
- Locally available: the file has been downloaded to this PC but remains synchronized with OneDrive.
- Always keep on this device: the file is pinned for local retention and remains synchronized unless you deliberately change that status.
Selecting Free up disk space can return a downloaded file to online-only status without deleting it. Selecting Download all files downloads cloud content to the PC. Neither action enables or suppresses the cloud-delete reminder.
OneDrive build 23.066 or later enables Files On-Demand by default, according to Microsoft’s current guidance. The default affects storage behavior, not the warning policy. An online-only item is still a synchronized OneDrive item: deleting it from File Explorer can delete the cloud copy and synchronized copies.

What is the difference between OneDrive’s cloud warning and Windows’ local delete confirmation?
They protect different scopes and are controlled in different places. A OneDrive warning concerns synchronization and cloud retention; Windows’ standard dialog concerns moving a local file to the Recycle Bin.
| Characteristic | OneDrive cloud warning | Windows local confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | OneDrive content and its synchronized copies across devices and online | The local File Explorer deletion or move to this PC’s Recycle Bin |
| Typical trigger | First cloud deletion, shared-content deletion, or a large synchronized deletion batch | Any user deletion covered by the Windows policy |
| Control location | OneDrive prompt or OneDrive administrative policy | Windows policy named ConfirmFileDelete |
| Recovery location | OneDrive recycle bin, with account-specific retention | The local Windows Recycle Bin, unless permanently deleted or emptied |
| What it cannot tell you alone | Whether a local copy is currently downloaded | Whether the item is shared or will synchronize to other devices |
A local File Explorer dialog does not replace the OneDrive warning. You can see a Windows confirmation and still need to understand that confirming the deletion may remove the cloud item for every synchronized location.
How do I enable the Windows 11 confirmation before a local deletion?
Use the ConfirmFileDelete policy when you want Windows to ask before a user deletes a file or moves it to the local Recycle Bin. This setting is separate from OneDrive and does not identify online-only files.
Using Local Group Policy Editor
- Press
Windows+R, typegpedit.msc, and pressEnter. The editor is available in editions that include Local Group Policy Editor. - Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer.
- Open Display confirmation dialog when deleting files, the policy associated with
ConfirmFileDelete. - Select Enabled, select Apply, then OK.
- Sign out and back in, or restart File Explorer, and test with a nonessential local file.
Microsoft documents that enabling this policy displays a confirmation whenever the user deletes a file or moves it to the Recycle Bin. Disabling it or leaving it unconfigured uses Windows’ default behavior, which normally does not display that confirmation.
Using the registry when Group Policy is unavailable
On a managed device, use your organization’s approved configuration process. If you administer your own PC and understand registry risks, the policy maps to the user policy value for ConfirmFileDelete. Export the relevant registry key before changing it, and do not apply a machine-wide setting when different Windows users need different behavior. A policy refresh or sign-in may be required before Explorer adopts the change.

DisableFirstDeleteDialog
Set DisableFirstDeleteDialog=1 to hide OneDrive’s first-delete reminder that explains “Deleted files are removed everywhere.” If the policy is disabled or unconfigured, the reminder appears until the user chooses not to show it again. Enabling this policy reduces interruption but removes an important explanation for users who may mistake an online-only placeholder for an independent local file.
SharedContentDeleteConfirmation
Set SharedContentDeleteConfirmation=1 to require confirmation before deleting shared content for everyone. Disabling the policy allows those deletes to proceed without that confirmation. This policy is especially relevant in shared folders, where a deletion can affect collaborators rather than only the person who initiated it.
ForcedLocalMassDeleteDetection
Set ForcedLocalMassDeleteDetection=1 to require confirmation when a large number of synchronized files are deleted locally. If the operation is not confirmed within seven days, OneDrive does not delete the files. This safeguard is aimed at accidental bulk operations, damaged local folders, and scripts that unexpectedly remove many synchronized items.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

ForcedLocalMassDeleteDetection=1 |
Large batches of synchronized-file deletions | Requires confirmation; unconfirmed operations expire after seven days | Can delay intentional cleanup until the user confirms it |
Policy changes may require OneDrive to restart, a policy refresh, or a Windows sign-in. Test with a harmless folder and document the expected behavior before deploying a policy broadly. Do not use a registry edit to bypass an organization’s change-control process.
Why does deleting an online-only file delete it everywhere?
An online-only file is a cloud item represented locally by a placeholder. File Explorer gives you a convenient path to that item, but the authoritative content remains in OneDrive. When you delete the placeholder, the OneDrive client records a deletion and synchronizes it to the account and other connected devices.
This is different from selecting Free up disk space. Freeing space removes the local downloaded content while keeping the OneDrive item. Pressing Delete on the file itself removes the synchronized item. Before deleting, check the status icon, the folder’s sharing state, and whether other devices or people rely on it.

What happens to a deleted OneDrive file, and how long can I recover it?
Recovery normally starts in the OneDrive recycle bin, not the Windows Recycle Bin. Microsoft’s current guidance documents different retention windows by account type.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Account or service | Published recycle-bin window | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Personal OneDrive | Up to 30 days | The OneDrive website’s recycle bin for the personal account |
| OneDrive for work or school | Generally up to 93 days | The organization’s OneDrive recycle bin; policies or administrator action may affect availability |
| SharePoint content | Generally up to 93 days | The relevant SharePoint recycle-bin workflow, often requiring site-owner or administrator access |
These are maximum periods in Microsoft’s current guidance, not a promise that every item will remain recoverable for the full period. Emptying a recycle bin, retention rules, legal holds, administrator actions, or account changes can alter the result. Restore promptly, and verify that the restored item has synchronized back to the expected devices.
How do I troubleshoot a warning that still appears or no longer appears?
First identify which dialog you are seeing. The wording, location, and affected item usually reveal whether it comes from OneDrive or Windows.
OneDrive still warns after I tried to disable it
- Check whether the dialog is for shared content or a large deletion batch. Those are separate triggers and may remain enforced by policy.
- Look for Don’t show this reminder again in the actual OneDrive prompt; changing Files On-Demand will not change it.
- Restart OneDrive and confirm that you are signed into the intended account. A personal account and a work or school account can have different policies.
- On a managed PC, ask the administrator whether
SharedContentDeleteConfirmationorForcedLocalMassDeleteDetectionis enforced.
OneDrive stopped warning and I want the reminder back
- Trigger an applicable delete prompt and clear the suppression option when it appears.
- If no prompt appears, test with an item that is genuinely synchronized and, where appropriate, shared or part of a larger batch; not every ordinary deletion generates a new dialog.
- Check whether
DisableFirstDeleteDialog=1is present under the OneDrive policy path. An administrator must remove or change that policy.
I see a Windows confirmation, but no OneDrive explanation
The ConfirmFileDelete policy may be enabled while OneDrive’s own reminder is suppressed or disabled. Read the file’s OneDrive status and check the account’s online view before confirming. The local dialog confirms only the Explorer action; it does not describe synchronization consequences.
A large deletion is blocked or does not complete
With ForcedLocalMassDeleteDetection=1, OneDrive requires confirmation for a large synchronized deletion. Confirm it within seven days if the operation is intentional. If it is not confirmed in that period, OneDrive leaves the files undeleted; investigate the cause of the batch instead of repeatedly retrying it.

- Read the OneDrive warning, especially language stating that files are removed everywhere. Keep the reminder enabled if you want future protection.
- After deletion, verify the item in the OneDrive website and, if necessary, restore it from the correct recycle bin.
For large cleanups, work in smaller batches, keep an independent backup of irreplaceable data, and allow synchronization to settle before starting the next batch. A warning is a safety net, not a substitute for a backup or a tested recovery plan.

ConfirmFileDeletepolicy. - Recover local disk space without deleting cloud content: use Files On-Demand’s Free up disk space action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make OneDrive ask before every single file deletion?
The normal OneDrive reminder is trigger-based rather than a documented per-file switch. An administrator can enforce specific protections for shared content and large deletion batches, while Windows’ separate ConfirmFileDelete policy can ask before local Explorer deletions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes pausing OneDrive prevent a cloud file from being deleted everywhere?
Pausing synchronization delays upload and download activity but is not a reliable deletion-safety control. Once synchronization resumes, a deletion recorded locally can still propagate, so use the correct warning or restore workflow instead.
Will restoring a file from the Windows Recycle Bin restore it to OneDrive?
Not necessarily. A cloud deletion is normally recovered from the OneDrive or SharePoint recycle bin; the Windows Recycle Bin may contain only a local item, depending on how the deletion was processed and synchronized.
Why can a work or school file disappear even when I did not delete it?
A collaborator, site owner, administrator, retention rule, or shared-folder change may remove or move the item. Check the OneDrive or SharePoint recycle bin and your organization’s audit or support process rather than assuming the local warning setting caused it.
Is Files On-Demand available on every Windows 11 OneDrive installation?
Microsoft’s current guidance says OneDrive build 23.066 or later enables Files On-Demand by default. Older builds or organization policies may differ, and the feature’s availability still does not determine whether delete warnings appear.
