Windows 11 has a clear adoption lead over Windows 10 among Windows systems in Steam’s August 2026 survey: 75.53% to 24.37%. That is a milestone for Windows 11, not proof that it delivers better gaming performance. The survey shows what participating Steam users report using; it cannot tell us whether the lead will endure.
What Windows 11’s Steam lead actually shows
Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey reports Windows 11 64-bit at 75.53% of the Windows-only results in August 2026, up 0.52 percentage points for the month. Windows 10 64-bit stood at 24.37%, down 0.51 percentage points. These are shares within the survey’s Windows display—not shares of all personal computers.
Valve says participation is optional and anonymous, and the monthly survey collects information about the hardware and software its customers use. It is therefore best read as a snapshot of respondents, not a census of every Steam user or a controlled test of operating-system quality. A change in the figures does not, by itself, explain why users switched.
How long it took Windows 11 to overtake Windows 10
Windows 11’s lead came after a gradual transition, not an immediate handoff. PC Gamer’s review of Steam survey history reports that Windows 11 first passed Windows 10 among Steam users in October 2024, roughly three years after Windows 11 launched.

The distinction matters: the August 2026 result confirms that Windows 11 is now well ahead in this survey, but it does not mean Windows 10 disappeared when the crossover happened. In PC Gamer’s April 2026 snapshot, Windows 10 still accounted for 25.53% of Steam users, compared with 67.74% for Windows 11. Those are historical figures from that report, not the latest survey reading.
Why Windows 11 could keep the lead
The current margin is large, and Windows 11 gained share in the August survey while Windows 10 lost share. Those facts support a cautious expectation that Windows 11 will remain the leading Windows version among Steam respondents in the near term.

Windows 10’s general support has ended, which is relevant context for people deciding whether to move to a supported release. But the available figures do not show that the end of support caused a particular month’s change. The survey tracks reported use; it does not establish users’ reasons for changing systems.
What could slow the transition
Windows 10’s substantial presence in PC Gamer’s April 2026 snapshot shows that adoption remained incomplete well after its support ended. PC Gamer also identifies Windows 11’s system requirements as a hurdle for owners of older PCs. That makes uneven migration plausible, but the available reporting does not quantify how many Steam users cannot upgrade or how much eligibility explains the trend.

If you are deciding whether your own PC can move to Windows 11, check Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and requirements against your hardware. The survey does not show that most players need a new computer, and it offers no basis for buying one to improve game performance.
Steam adoption is not a gaming-performance test
A larger share of Steam users on Windows 11 says more about adoption than about frame rates, frame-time consistency, stability, or game compatibility. The survey does not compare Windows 11 and Windows 10 under controlled gaming conditions, so its percentages cannot establish which operating system performs better in a particular game or on a particular PC.

To judge performance, you would need relevant benchmarks that test comparable hardware, games, settings, and software versions. The adoption figures answer a narrower question: which Windows version participating Steam users report using?

Windows 11 Home and Pro have version-specific servicing timelines. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Home and Pro lifecycle page lists October 10, 2028, as the end date for version 26H2 and October 13, 2027, for version 25H2. Microsoft displays those dates in Pacific Time. Check the lifecycle entry for the exact release and edition installed on your PC; “Windows 11” alone does not identify a single support end date.

Will Windows 11’s Steam lead last?
It has room to last: Windows 11 holds a wide lead in the August 2026 Windows-only results, and its share rose that month. But the survey cannot predict a reversal date, assign odds to one, or guarantee that current momentum will continue. Older hardware, user choices, future servicing decisions, and changes in who participates can all affect the reported mix; the available sources do not measure how much each factor matters.
The most accurate verdict is that Windows 11 has won a significant adoption milestone on Steam, while the transition remains unfinished. Future monthly survey results will show whether its lead keeps growing; they still will not, on their own, prove a gaming-performance advantage.
