Before you reinstall Windows 11, back up your files, choose the installation path that matches what you need to keep, and confirm the edition matches your license. A digital license often lets you skip entering a product key, but it does not make a clean install preserve your data or guarantee activation after a major hardware change.
What should you do before installing Windows 11?
Back up important files before reinstalling. Microsoft lists an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or cloud storage such as OneDrive as backup destinations. A “keep my files” or “keep personal files” option is not a substitute for a verified backup.
Check that the device meets Windows 11’s minimum requirements: an approved 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, and a storage device of at least 64 GB. These are eligibility requirements, not a promise of comfortable performance; some features and apps need more. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements.
Which installation option keeps your files and apps?
The result depends on whether you run Setup from an existing Windows installation, boot from installation media for a clean install, or use Reset this PC.

| Option | What it keeps | What it removes |
|---|---|---|
Run setup.exe from installation media inside Windows; choose “Change what to keep” |
Choose “Keep personal files and apps” to retain personal files, apps, and settings; or “Keep personal files only” to retain personal files and settings. | “Keep personal files only” removes apps. “Keep nothing” removes personal files, settings, and apps. |
| Boot from installation media for a clean install | Nothing from the existing Windows installation is kept. | Personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. |
| Reset this PC; choose “Keep my files” | Personal files. | Apps and settings. |
Microsoft describes a clean installation as removing personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. If you cannot afford to lose files, confirm your backup before proceeding. For Reset this PC, back up important files and keep your BitLocker recovery key available if the device is encrypted. Microsoft’s guides explain reinstalling Windows with installation media and resetting your PC.
How do you create Windows 11 installation media?
Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool workflow requires a reliable internet connection and a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the media deletes the drive’s contents, so copy anything important from it first. For a virtual machine, you can create an ISO without a USB drive; an ISO can also be used to make DVD media. Follow Microsoft’s Windows 11 download instructions.
- Back up files from the USB drive you plan to use, then confirm it is blank and has at least 8 GB of capacity.
- Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page and follow the Media Creation Tool instructions, or choose the ISO option if that better fits your virtual-machine or DVD setup.
- When the media is ready, start the appropriate installation route: launch
setup.exefrom within running Windows for the in-place keep options, or boot from the media to perform a clean install.
Do you need a Windows 11 product key?
Not always. Microsoft defines a digital license (also called a digital entitlement in Windows 11) as an activation method that does not require entering a product key. A product key is a 25-character code. Which method applies depends on how Windows was obtained. See Microsoft’s Windows activation guidance.

If Setup asks for a key during a reinstall and the device has a digital license for the same Windows edition, Microsoft says you can skip entering the key; Windows should activate online after installation. Some devices have a product key embedded in firmware, which can be applied automatically when it matches the installed edition.

Depending on how Windows was purchased, Microsoft says the key may be on the product packaging or a Certificate of Authenticity, in a purchase confirmation, a retailer’s digital locker, or a program portal. For a refurbished PC, the refurbisher must provide a product key.
Which Windows 11 edition should you install?
Install the edition that matches the license already held for the device. A license for Windows Home does not license Windows Pro: installing a different edition requires a valid license for that edition. During setup, check the edition before continuing rather than treating Home and Pro as interchangeable choices. Microsoft’s reinstallation instructions and activation guidance cover the edition and license match.

Why might Windows 11 fail to activate after installation?
The installed edition does not match the license
A digital license for one edition will not activate a different edition. Confirm that the installed edition matches the device’s license; a different edition needs its own valid license.
The device had a significant hardware change
A change such as replacing the motherboard can prevent Windows from finding the digital license associated with the device. Microsoft recommends linking a Microsoft account to the digital license before a major hardware change. Afterward, use the Activation troubleshooter to try to reactivate Windows.
Activation details need checking
Activation checks whether a product key or digital entitlement is valid for the hardware configuration. Microsoft cautions that activation by itself does not guarantee that a copy of Windows is genuine. See Microsoft’s steps for reactivating Windows after a hardware change.
Does upgrading to Windows 11 keep files?
Microsoft says the default upgrade experience moves files and data to the Windows 11 installation, provided the device meets the minimum requirements. That describes the default upgrade flow; it should not be assumed to apply to a clean install, which removes files and other existing content.
