As of October 1, 2026, the available reporting points instead to a refreshed Apple TV 4K set-top box expected in 2026, with no expected change to its current form factor. An inexpensive HDMI stick could make sense as a way to compete with Amazon, Google and Roku, but that remains speculation—not a confirmed Apple product or launch plan.
What is Apple’s current plan for a streaming stick?
There is no announced Apple-branded stick to buy or wait for, and Apple has not confirmed that it is developing one. MacRumors reported on August 18, 2026, that Apple is working on a new Apple TV 4K for 2026 after an earlier rumored 2025 launch did not happen. The report says the next model is not expected to depart from the current slim black plastic set-top-box design.
That distinction matters: a new Apple TV 4K would be a refresh of Apple’s existing box, not evidence of a smaller, lower-cost HDMI stick. Until Apple makes an announcement, claims about an Apple TV stick’s release date, price, or specifications should be treated as unconfirmed.
What might the next Apple TV 4K include?
MacRumors has reported possible upgrades including a newer A-series chip, Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7, an updated remote, and continued Thread and Matter support. These are reported expectations, not specifications Apple has confirmed. The report does not establish a release date or price.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
The reporting therefore points toward a faster or more connected version of the existing box, rather than a separate entry-level stick. That is an inference from the expected form factor, not a stated Apple strategy.
What does Apple TV 4K offer today?
Apple’s current product page lists two configurations. Both include a USB‑C Siri Remote and an A15 Bionic chip; the higher-capacity model adds Ethernet and Thread networking.

Apple presents the box as more than a way to watch streaming video: its listed uses include Apple services and streaming apps, gaming, FaceTime-related TV use and smart-home control. Apple describes it as a smart-home hub compatible with HomeKit and Matter. Those capabilities help explain why Apple TV 4K is a relatively full-featured living-room device, but they do not show that Apple plans to put the same features in a stick.
How does Apple’s approach compare with Fire TV, Google TV and Roku?
The available evidence supports a limited comparison of product types and confirmed details—not a reliable price or performance ranking. The sources cited here do not establish current prices, picture and sound specifications, update lifetimes, or country-by-country retailer availability for these devices, so those comparisons would be misleading to guess.

| Product or category | Form factor or evidence in the cited sources | What that means for this comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K | Apple lists a set-top box with 64GB or 128GB storage, an A15 Bionic chip, and a USB‑C Siri Remote. | Apple’s current option is a box with smart-home, gaming and other TV features—not an announced stick. |
| Amazon Fire TV Stick | Amazon says its redesigned Fire TV interface is available on all current-generation Fire TV Stick devices. Amazon reported more than 300 million Fire TV devices purchased worldwide in 2026. | Amazon has an established stick family and a redesigned interface; the cited figure covers Fire TV devices overall, not sticks alone. |
| Google TV Streamer | Ofcom’s 2025 Technology Tracker lists Google TV Streamer among its tracked streaming-device categories. | The cited source establishes that it is a tracked category, but does not provide a product specification or direct comparison with Apple TV 4K. |
| Roku Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus | Roku’s 2026 filing, covering 2025 results, says the company introduced both products in 2025 and defines streaming players as HDMI-connected devices. | Roku offers stick products; the filing does not establish a direct feature or price comparison with Apple TV 4K. |
The scale figures describe different things and should not be read as a head-to-head market-share comparison. Amazon’s more than 300 million figure is purchases of Fire TV devices worldwide, reported in 2026. Roku’s 2026 filing reports more than 90 million global streaming households and 145.6 billion streaming hours in 2025. Those figures indicate the reach of the respective platforms, not how many people would choose an Apple stick.
Can you use Apple TV without buying an Apple TV box?
Yes. Apple said in 2025 that the Apple TV app was available in more than 100 countries and regions and on more than 1 billion screens. Its listed platforms included Apple devices, popular smart TVs, Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices, Chromecast with Google TV, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and the web. That is availability of the Apple TV app and service—not proof that every feature of the Apple TV 4K box is available on those devices.

If your main aim is to watch Apple TV content, check whether the app is available on the television or streaming device you already own before considering additional hardware. If you specifically want Apple TV 4K’s box-based features, such as its smart-home hub role, app availability elsewhere is not a substitute for that device.

Do not plan a purchase around an unannounced product. If you need a streaming device now, compare currently sold devices against the features you actually use and confirm local availability and pricing with the retailer. If you are interested in a future Apple TV 4K, follow Apple’s announcements; the 2026 refresh described in reporting is still a rumor until Apple confirms it.

A stick would be a plausible way for Apple to offer a smaller, potentially lower-cost entry point, but plausibility is not evidence of a product decision. The reporting available as of October 1, 2026, favors continuity with Apple’s existing box rather than a shift to a stick.
