Choose the drive by the disc format first. A USB CD/DVD drive is the sensible class for CDs and DVDs; you need a Blu-ray-capable drive when Blu-ray discs are part of the job. That decision does not establish Steam Frame compatibility, however. Valve lists one rear USB-C 2.0 charging-and-data port, but does not publish an accessory-power budget. A mirrored Frame kernel-source change adds optical-drive modules, yet there is no confirmation that those settings are in a retail update or that a named drive has worked on a retail Frame.

In practice, four separate gates have to clear: the drive must support the disc, Frame must enumerate and mount it, the drive must receive enough power to spin, and suitable SteamOS software must handle the content. Data-disc access, DVD or Blu-ray movie playback, disc burning and running an older Windows game are different problems.

How should you choose between a USB CD drive and a USB DVD/Blu-ray drive?

Start with the discs you actually need to read. A CD-only mechanism cannot read DVDs, while a drive specified for CD and DVD covers both formats. Blu-ray capability is an additional requirement, not a synonym for general Steam Frame support.

CD-only drives

A CD-only reader or writer is appropriate only when every disc is a CD. No named CD-only model is verified in the available product material, so treat this as a format class rather than a recommendation. If your collection includes DVDs, a CD-only purchase creates an avoidable second-drive problem.

CD/DVD drives

The Verbatim 98938 is explicitly specified to read and write CD and DVD media. Its format list means a buyer with ordinary audio CDs, data CDs, DVD-ROMs or recordable DVDs does not need to search for a separate “DVD-only” category. The same specification does not advertise Blu-ray reading, so it cannot substitute for a Blu-ray drive.

Blu-ray-capable drives

The Verbatim 43888 and ASUS BW-16D1X-U examples list Blu-ray along with CD/DVD capability. Check the exact model’s supported-media list: “Blu-ray” on a product page establishes the optical format, not whether Frame supplies power, loads the required kernel modules or has a player for encrypted films. The Verbatim model is marketed for Ultra HD 4K playback, but that marketing claim has not been verified on Steam Frame.

What USB connection does Steam Frame provide?

Valve’s published Frame specification, consulted in 2026, lists one rear USB-C 2.0 port for charging and data. It does not state how much current or wattage that port can deliver to an accessory. The same specification lists a 45 W maximum charging input; that is power entering the headset, not a 45 W output allowance for a drive.

Frame runs SteamOS 3 on ARM64 hardware. A USB-C plug, an adapter or a drive’s “USB-powered” label only describes physical connection and the drive’s intended power arrangement. None proves that the device will enumerate on this operating system or receive enough power during spin-up.

Does the optical-drive kernel change mean support has shipped?

No. A mirrored, unofficial copy of a Frame kernel source tree contains commit b68e4a1, which changes arch/arm64/configs/gabe_defconfig to include three module settings: CONFIG_CDROM=m, CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=m and CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=m. These settings are relevant to optical-drive handling, but they are source configuration, not proof of an installed retail build.

The change does not establish that the modules are compiled into the current Frame image, loaded when a USB drive is attached, or paired with a graphical disc utility. It also says nothing about electrical power, encrypted-movie decoding, disc-region behavior or compatibility with a particular game’s installer.

In an October 2026 Steam Community discussion titled “Why can’t I use my detachable disc drive?”, an owner reported that a detachable drive would not spin from Frame power and that disc support was missing. Valve-tagged developer Gabe Rowe replied, “we will look into this thanks for alerting us.” That is a response to a report, not an announcement that support has shipped. Valve’s support guidance recommends installing available system updates, but the cited material does not confirm that this specific commit reached a retail update.

Will a USB optical drive get enough power from Frame?

Power is an independent gate from format and software. The owner report describes a drive that would not spin from Frame power; a first splitter attempt did not solve it, and the owner then looked for a powered hub. This is one person’s experience, not a measured limit that applies to every Frame or every drive.

Bus-powered portable drives

The Verbatim 98938 and 43888 are described as USB-powered portable products. That keeps the setup compact, but their labels do not override Frame’s unpublished accessory-output budget. Spin-up can be the demanding moment: a drive may appear connected yet fail when the motor starts. A USB-A-to-USB-C adapter changes the plug, not the available electrical power or SteamOS support.

Drives with their own adapter

The ASUS BW-16D1X-U illustrates a different design. ASUS specifies CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and BD-ROM reading and requires a separate 12 V, 3 A adapter. Its cited operating-system list omits SteamOS, so the adapter addresses only one possible failure point. It does not make the model Frame-compatible.

Powered hubs

A powered USB-C hub with USB data ports is a logical troubleshooting avenue when the headset cannot supply a bus-powered drive, but no particular hub or electrical configuration has been validated here. A hub must itself pass data correctly, provide the drive’s required current and remain compatible with Frame’s port and SteamOS. Treat it as a conditional accessory, not a guaranteed fix.

What can Frame do after it detects the drive?

Detection is not the same as usable content. A complete optical workflow has several layers:

  • USB enumeration: Frame must recognize the device on its rear port.
  • Block-device support: the relevant optical modules must exist in and load from the installed SteamOS build.
  • Disc mounting: the filesystem and disc type must be readable.
  • Application support: a program must decode or launch what is on the disc.
  • Content compatibility: encryption, copy protection, architecture and game dependencies may still prevent use.

A source-code setting can help with the second layer, but it does not guarantee any of the others. Valve’s documentation distinguishes PC games streamed from another computer from software executed locally in standalone mode; an optical disc does not change that distinction.

Can you watch DVD or Blu-ray movies from a USB drive?

Not automatically. Verbatim states that DVD movie playback for the 98938 requires separate DVD playback software and that the software is not included. Its 43888 Blu-ray product likewise does not include playback software. Bundled Windows utilities therefore cannot be treated as SteamOS applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commercial movie discs add licensing and encryption requirements beyond reading files. Even if Frame mounts a disc, the available evidence does not establish a DVD or Blu-ray player for SteamOS on Frame, nor does it establish that protected content will decode. The 43888’s advertised Ultra HD 4K capability is a property of the product’s marketing and software bundle, not verified 4K playback on Frame.

Can an optical drive install or run an older PC game?

A disc can supply installer files without making the game executable on Frame. The installer may expect Windows, an x86 processor, legacy drivers, a particular copy-protection service or an online activation system. Frame’s ARM64 hardware and SteamOS environment introduce additional compatibility questions, and no cited demonstration establishes that a legacy physical game’s installer or protection scheme works.

Before buying a drive for a game, identify whether the title has a native SteamOS/Linux build, a supported compatibility layer, or a version that can be installed on another computer and streamed to Frame. The optical mechanism solves only the act of reading the disc; it does not provide a Windows runtime or bypass protection.

Which drive examples fit each use case?

For CDs and DVDs: Verbatim 98938

This slimline writer is the clearest format match for a mixed CD/DVD collection. Verbatim specifies CD/DVD reading and writing, USB power and a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter. It also states that DVD movie playback software is separate and that the bundled Nero software is Windows-only. On Frame, you must still confirm power, module availability, mounting and a suitable SteamOS application.

For Blu-ray plus CD/DVD: Verbatim 43888

This USB-C, USB-powered writer is specified for Blu-ray, DVD and CD burning. It is the more appropriate format class when Blu-ray discs are non-negotiable. The manufacturer does not include playback software, and its advertised 4K playback must not be read as a Frame result. USB-C fit reduces adapter complexity but does not establish operating-system support.

For a separately powered optical setup: ASUS BW-16D1X-U

ASUS lists CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and BD-ROM reading and a required 12 V, 3 A adapter. That arrangement can avoid relying on Frame’s unknown accessory-power budget, while adding a wall adapter and a USB Type-A connection. Because the cited OS list omits SteamOS, this is a power-design example rather than a proven recommendation for Frame.

What should you check before spending money?

  1. List the media. Decide whether you need CD only, CD plus DVD, or CD/DVD/Blu-ray. Include recordable and rewritable formats if burning matters, and verify them on the exact model’s manufacturer page.
  2. Separate reading from playback. For data, you need block-device and filesystem support. For movies, you also need a compatible player and any required decryption or codecs. For games, check the title’s SteamOS, ARM64 and protection requirements independently.
  3. Read the power arrangement. Mark the drive as bus-powered or separately powered. Do not convert Frame’s 45 W charging-input figure into an accessory-output estimate.
  4. Check the cable path. Confirm whether the drive uses USB-C, USB-A or an adapter. Connector fit is necessary for a physical connection but cannot prove enumeration.
  5. Check the installed Frame build. Install available system updates, then verify what the retail image actually contains. The mirrored b68e4a1 source change is not a substitute for a shipped-build confirmation.
  6. Plan a low-risk first disc. Start with a non-critical, unencrypted data disc if you proceed. A failure there helps distinguish power or device-recognition problems from movie licensing or game-runtime problems.
  7. Keep a fallback. If local optical access is essential for travel, retain another computer or a legally obtained digital copy. No named drive-and-disc combination is confirmed here as a dependable Frame setup.

How do you troubleshoot “Why can’t I use my detachable disc drive?”

The drive does not spin

Check the cable, adapter and hub path first, then consider whether the drive is bus-powered beyond what Frame can provide. A separately powered design changes the power arrangement, while a powered hub may help only if its data and electrical specifications match the drive. The owner’s splitter experience shows why a passive splitter should not be assumed to solve a power deficit.

The drive powers on but Frame does not show it

This points toward a data-path, kernel-module or operating-system issue rather than disc format alone. Confirm the installed build and updates, reconnect directly where possible, and compare behavior with a known-good USB data accessory. There is no published evidence here that a retail Frame image loads the three modules from the mirrored commit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The disc is detected but files do not open

Check whether the disc is a data disc, a packet-written disc, a movie disc or a game installer. Different filesystem and application requirements can produce different results. A successful device connection is not evidence that protected movie content or a legacy executable is supported.

A movie disc is visible but will not play

Verify that a SteamOS-compatible player exists and supports the disc’s protection scheme. Verbatim’s separate-software disclosures mean the Windows utilities bundled with its drives are not enough. Do not treat a drive’s advertised Blu-ray or 4K capability as proof of Frame playback.

An old game installer launches but the game fails

Investigate the game’s architecture, compatibility-layer support, copy protection and activation requirements. Reading installer files from optical media is only the first step; Frame still needs a supported way to execute the game.

What evidence would turn this into a confirmed compatibility claim?

The strongest evidence would be a retail Frame release note or support page naming optical-drive support, followed by a reproducible demonstration with a specified drive and disc. Between those points, the evidence has different weight:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Evidence What it proves What it does not prove
Manufacturer format specification Which media the drive is designed to read or write SteamOS, Frame power or retail recognition
Valve’s port specification That Frame has one rear USB-C 2.0 charging-and-data port The port’s accessory-output rating
Mirrored kernel-source change That three optical-related settings appear in that source snapshot Inclusion in a retail image, module loading or playback software
Owner report or developer reply That one user encountered a problem and Valve acknowledged the report A universal hardware limit or shipped feature
Retail drive-and-disc demonstration Evidence for that exact build, drive, disc and task Compatibility of every other model or media type

What is the practical verdict?

For CDs and DVDs, start with an external USB CD/DVD drive whose format list explicitly includes both; the Verbatim 98938 is an example of that class. For Blu-ray, choose a model whose manufacturer explicitly lists Blu-ray and CD/DVD support, such as the Verbatim 43888 example. If bus power is the likely obstacle, a separately powered design such as the ASUS BW-16D1X-U illustrates the trade-off, but its omitted SteamOS listing prevents a compatibility guarantee.

Do not buy on the assumption that USB-C, a 45 W charging specification or the mirrored optical-module commit guarantees success. Confirm the installed Frame build, exact media formats, power arrangement and intended software before spending. At present, the documented facts support a format-based comparison, not a claim that USB optical-drive support is confirmed on retail Steam Frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Frame’s 45 W charging figure mean it can power any USB DVD drive?

No. The 45 W figure is Valve’s maximum charging input for the headset. Valve does not publish the rear USB-C port’s accessory-output budget, so it cannot be used to predict a drive’s spin-up behavior.

Is a USB-C Blu-ray drive automatically compatible with Steam Frame?

No. USB-C only describes the connector and, in some products, the intended power path. The retail operating-system build, module loading, available player software and the drive’s power demand still have to work together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Would a powered USB-C hub definitely fix a drive that will not spin?

Not definitely. A hub can address a power-design problem only when its own data path and electrical output meet the drive’s needs. No specific hub configuration has been validated for this case.

Does a USB recovery drive prove that optical discs are supported?

No. Recovery media uses a different boot and storage path from USB optical handling. A Frame that can recover from a USB key may still lack the modules, power or applications needed for a CD, DVD or Blu-ray drive.

Are the three optical-drive modules present in every retail Frame update?

That is not established. The three settings appear in mirrored source commit b68e4a1, but the available material does not confirm that the change was included and enabled in a retail update.
