For home networks, Wi-Fi 7 already offers multi-link operation on compatible routers and clients. Wi-Fi 8 is being developed with an emphasis on reliability, but its final capabilities and product timing are not settled.
What is the actual difference between Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 8?
| Question | Wi-Fi 7 | Wi-Fi 8 |
|---|---|---|
| IEEE status | IEEE 802.11be-2024 is published and associated with Wi-Fi 7. IEEE 802.11be-2024. | Wi-Fi 8 is the industry name associated with IEEE P802.11bn, a project still in development. IEEE P802.11bn project status. |
| Design emphasis | The standard is titled “Enhancements for Extremely High Throughput (EHT).” IEEE says it supports at least one mode capable of at least 30 Gbit/s maximum throughput at the MAC data service access point. That is a standards-level maximum, not a typical home speed or internet plan speed. IEEE standard record. | The project is named “Ultra High Reliability.” This indicates its development emphasis, not a finalized list of home-router features or a guaranteed improvement. IEEE project listing. |
| Status for households | IEEE describes operation between 1 and 7.250 GHz and backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy Wi-Fi devices in the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands. What a household can use depends on device support and local spectrum rules. IEEE standard record. | The project is still a draft; proposed mechanisms and capabilities should not be treated as settled requirements. |
| Timing | The standard is published. | IEEE’s timeline, checked in 2026, lists draft D2.00 and forecasts a final-document milestone in May 2028. The schedule can change, and a standards milestone does not set a retail or certification launch date. IEEE project timeline. |
What Wi-Fi 7 can change in a home today
Wi-Fi 7’s home-relevant advantage in the available evidence is Multi-Link Operation (MLO): compatible access points and client devices can use multiple links rather than relying on a single link. The benefit depends on support at both ends; a Wi-Fi 7 router alone does not make an older phone or laptop use MLO.
What a residential trial measured
On 26 February 2026, the Wireless Broadband Alliance announced results from a Phase 2 Wi-Fi 7 field trial. It used a commercially available tri-band access point and an Intel BE200 client using eMLSR in a 4,500-square-foot single-family home. The setup included wall attenuation, active interference and traffic from multiple devices. Under heavy 6 GHz co-channel interference, the trial reported up to twice the aggregated throughput compared with legacy single-link operation, a 35–48% reduction in application-layer latency, and up to a 40% reduction in MAC-layer jitter. Wireless Broadband Alliance field-trial results.
Those are results from that particular trial environment and comparison, not predictions for every home. A different client, router, floor plan, interference profile or broadband service can produce different results.

What Wi-Fi 8 may mean—and what is not known yet
Wi-Fi 8’s Ultra High Reliability focus suggests that consistency and reliability are priorities, rather than simply a headline peak-throughput target. But P802.11bn remains in development. The available status does not establish a final feature set, typical home performance, certification requirements, router release date or price. Do not treat projected reliability gains or proposed technical mechanisms as finished consumer capabilities.
The May 2028 date is IEEE’s forecast for a final-document milestone, not a promise that certified Wi-Fi 8 routers will be available then. Standards approval, certification and retail products are distinct stages, and the project schedule may move.

Should you upgrade your home network now?
Start with the problem you want to fix, not the generation number. Consider whether the issue is weak coverage, an unstable connection, interference, latency when the network is busy, or a need to serve more devices. The appropriate remedy may be better router placement, wired backhaul, a mesh system, or an access point suited to the floor plan—not necessarily a new Wi-Fi generation.
- Check client support: Identify whether the devices you use most support the Wi-Fi 7 feature you want, including MLO. Replacing only the router may not unlock it.
- Check local spectrum permissions: The standard describes bands and coexistence, but permitted operation—especially in 6 GHz—depends on local rules.
- Check the connection behind Wi-Fi: Router-to-modem service speed and any wired links can limit what wireless improvements mean for internet use.
- Match the equipment to the layout: A single access point and a mesh kit address different coverage situations; placement and backhaul matter.
- Compare the cost with the pain point: Account for replacing the router and, if necessary, client devices. There is no evidence here for a universal performance gain or a specific model recommendation.
If your existing network meets your needs, Wi-Fi 8’s in-progress status does not provide an evidence-based reason to wait for a specific retail date. If you have a current coverage or capacity problem, compare available Wi-Fi 7 equipment against that need rather than buying on the assumption that every home will see the same trial results.
