Your playtime can exceed a game’s story-length estimate because that estimate describes a particular kind of run, not a personal deadline. A main-story figure usually has a narrower scope than a run that includes side quests, exploration, retries, or completion goals. Check what the estimate counts, then compare it with the way you played.

Why did this game take me longer than HowLongToBeat says?

Playtime listings distinguish between different goals. A main-story estimate addresses a run focused on required story objectives; other categories can include side activities or near-total completion. Steam’s How Long To Beat curator page, for example, displays separate Main Story, Main + Sides, Completionist, and All Styles figures (Steam Curator: How Long To Beat).

That distinction explains many gaps: comparing your exploratory or completion-focused run with a main-story figure is not an apples-to-apples comparison. The categories are guides to different play approaches, not individualized predictions.

What can add time to your run?

Use these as diagnostic possibilities rather than fixed additions. The available sources do not establish how many hours—or what percentage—to add for any one factor.

  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
  • Optional content: Side quests, collectibles, and other activities beyond required story objectives expand the scope of a run.
  • Exploration and item hunting: Open-world games can take much longer when players search the map and look for every item. The Washington Post’s March 18, 2022 article contrasted a roughly 20-hour Dying Light 2 main story with a 500-hour claim that included exploring the map and finding every item. Those are historical figures reported in 2022, not current estimates or a typical-run prediction (The Washington Post).
  • Difficulty and retries: Challenging encounters can require repeated attempts. In 2022, The Washington Post described Elden Ring as demanding because of its difficulty and limited directional cues. That example does not mean every player will need extra time or that every game presents the same challenge.
  • Navigation and learning: Finding a route, understanding mechanics, reading dialogue, or spending time in menus may lengthen an individual session or full run.
  • Different game scope: Downloadable content, platform differences, or a changed game version may make the experience you played differ from the one behind an estimate.

How to compare your time with an estimate

  1. Match the scope. Identify whether the figure covers required story objectives, story plus side activities, or completionist goals. Do not compare unlike categories.
  2. Match the game context. Where the information is available, compare the same version, platform, and included downloadable content.
  3. Match the play approach. A run that rushes through story objectives differs from one that explores, takes detours, or pursues completion.
  4. Use the estimate as orientation, not a deadline. A category figure cannot account for every player’s route, pace, or experience.

Historical figures show why scope matters. The Washington Post reported in March 2022 that Horizon Forbidden West’s main storyline was listed at over 27 hours, while Elden Ring’s story was over 46.5 hours and its all-tasks figure was 107 hours. These dated examples illustrate different categories and should not be treated as current estimates (The Washington Post).

Does a longer playtime mean the estimate was wrong?

Not necessarily. If the estimate describes a main-story run and your play included substantial optional content, the two numbers measure different scopes. Even when the categories match, a category-level estimate is not a promise about how quickly an individual will finish. The sources do not establish a reliable percentage adjustment for playing faster or slower.

Finishing time is also separate from whether players complete a game at all. The Washington Post reported that a 2019 study reviewing achievements from 725 Steam games found that 14 percent of players completed the games they owned. That is a study-specific completion statistic, not evidence that playtime estimates are systematically too short.

Why can games feel designed to take longer?

Some industry observers have discussed engagement and the value companies place on keeping players in a game. In the Washington Post’s March 2022 article, Polygon editor in chief and co-founder Chris Plante said, “Now we have games where the studios realize it’s less about the game, from a creative vision,” and added, “And more of a: ‘How do we, as a company, control your time?’ ”

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Researcher Brendan Keogh of Queensland University of Technology described a broader business incentive: “The general leading business model of the game industry right now is about holding players within a game service for as long as humanly possible,” he said. “You want players to just hang around for as long as possible and not go play something else.” CD Projekt Red lead quest designer Philipp Weber offered a different perspective on communicating length: “Just saying a game is long doesn’t work that well anymore,” he said. “I also have to give you a reason why it’s long and give you a good explanation of why you should stick with it.”

These are interviewees’ views on industry design and engagement, not proof that a particular game intentionally lengthened your run. For your own comparison, the more direct questions are what the estimate includes and what you chose to do in the game.
