But it is not listed as a fix for the separate black-screen-after-sign-in problem. If your desktop fails to load, Microsoft’s temporary workaround is to start explorer.exe from Task Manager.
Which emergency Windows update applies to your PC?
Microsoft released separate out-of-band (OOB) updates for different Windows 11 versions on September 14, 2026. Check your Windows version before installing: KB5129195 is for 24H2 and 25H2; 26H1 has its own update, KB5129194. These are not interchangeable packages.
| Windows 11 version | OOB update | OS build |
|---|---|---|
| 24H2 and 25H2 | KB5129195 | 26200.9457 and 26100.9457 |
| 26H1 | KB5129194 | 28000.2956 |
Microsoft describes KB5129195 as cumulative. Its listed improvements include protections for CVE-2026-62721, which Microsoft identifies as a Windows User-Mode Power Service elevation-of-privilege vulnerability, and fixes for Remote Desktop Services instability, some Hyper-V host-folder sharing failures, and some multichannel USB Audio Class 1.0 failures. Microsoft does not characterize the vulnerability’s severity or exploitation status in the cited advisory, so those details should not be inferred.
For installation or deployment, use the route appropriate to the device: check Windows Update on a personal PC, or follow Microsoft’s business deployment instructions for managed devices. The Microsoft advisory also provides Update Catalog guidance. Confirm the version-specific instructions in Microsoft’s KB5129195 advisory or, for 26H1, the KB5129194 advisory.

Does the patch fix the black screen after sign-in?
No such fix is listed in KB5129195’s improvements. Microsoft describes the black-screen and desktop-loading behavior as a known issue, and says a permanent resolution will arrive in a future Windows update. The patch’s security and reliability benefits are separate from this sign-in problem.
Microsoft says the issue can occur after installing the August 2026 non-security preview update KB5120998 and subsequent updates. It has primarily observed the problem on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix, and says it appears more frequent with some existing user profiles. That is an observed pattern, not evidence that the issue is limited to virtual desktops or affects every user in those environments.

What the black-screen problem looks like
After signing in, Windows may show a black screen because the desktop session did not load automatically. Some users may be unable to access the desktop until they start the session manually. Microsoft also notes that Windows Explorer crashes may appear in application event logs.
Try starting Windows Explorer for the affected session
Microsoft’s temporary workaround is to launch the desktop shell from Task Manager:

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Run new task.
- Enter
explorer.exe. - Select OK.
This can restore the desktop for the affected session; it is a mitigation, not a permanent repair.
What IT administrators can do
For enterprise-managed devices, Microsoft says administrators can deploy the version-specific Known Issue Rollback (KIR) Group Policy to mitigate the problem. The policy disables the change associated with the issue until Microsoft releases a resolution. Use the policy that matches the Windows version, and restart the device after configuring it for the change to apply. This is an administrator-managed policy, not a routine step for home users.

Hotpatch is a separate, limited option
KB5129241 is not the standard OOB package for all Windows 11 users. Microsoft restricts it to eligible Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 devices enrolled in hotpatch and already running the September security update KB5124008. Under those conditions, Microsoft says KB5129241 installs and takes effect without a restart. That restart behavior should not be assumed for standard cumulative updates or other editions. See Microsoft’s KB5129241 hotpatch advisory for eligibility and availability details.

As of October 8, 2026, Microsoft’s KB5129195 support advisory says: “We are working on a resolution for this issue, and it will be released in a future Windows update.” The advisory gives no release date or fix KB number.
