Winston’s copypasta is a deliberate conversational swerve: a reasonable point about another game suddenly becomes a demand for a “super smart gorilla from the moon” carrying a Tesla cannon and a dome shield. The joke is spreading because the specificity is absurd, yet longtime Overwatch players instantly recognize Winston and the memories attached to him. It is less an official campaign than a fan-made anniversary mood—an affectionate reminder that Overwatch still gives current and former players a shared language ten years after its 2016 launch.
What is the Winston copypasta?
The format begins with a plausible argument about a game, character or design problem. Instead of answering that subject on its own terms, the post pivots into an oddly detailed description of Winston: a super-smart gorilla from the moon, armed with a short-range toggle Tesla cannon and a dome shield built to counter “AoE slop.”
That abrupt mismatch is the entire mechanism. The opening sounds like ordinary criticism; the ending is so specific and so unmistakably Overwatch that the conversation becomes a punchline. The wording can be copied almost verbatim, adapted to another game, or shortened to a recognizable Winston reference.

The documented example appeared on October 23, 2026, when tats, posting as @ltats__, used Deadlock character design as the setup. The post questioned why Deadlock’s roster—including its Rat King character—did not have a figure matching the bizarre Winston description. Pedro Peres’s Destructoid feature, published October 26, 2026, reproduced that example and explained why the format had begun appearing across social media.

That timeline identifies a prominent documented example, not a proven origin for every version of the joke. A syndicated copy in Maxbit Games and a Yahoo Tech Gaming version appeared on October 27, but those copies repeat the Destructoid account rather than independently establishing who invented the meme.
Why is everyone posting the smart gorilla from the moon?
The joke works because Winston is both instantly legible and unusually overqualified for the arguments into which he is inserted. “Gorilla from the moon” supplies a ridiculous image; the Tesla cannon and dome shield add game-mechanical precision; “counter AoE slop” makes the whole sentence sound like an overconfident design brief.
For people who played Overwatch, the reference carries more than a visual gag. Winston recalls launch-era matches, team voice chat, hero-release speculation, Overwatch League viewing and years of lore discussions. For lapsed players, the copypasta is a low-effort way to recognize one another without returning to the game. Peres captured that tension with the line, “I’m being jumped by Winston everywhere I look, and I don’t even have Overwatch installed.”

How does the copypasta turn into an Overwatch celebration?
Its anniversary meaning comes from shared memory rather than from a formal slogan. A post about another game briefly recreates the old Overwatch vocabulary—heroes, abilities, counters and lore—then lets people enjoy recognizing it together. The “premise is devilishly simple,” as Peres put it, but the emotional payoff depends on a decade of familiarity.
That timing is concrete. Overwatch launched in 2016, and Blizzard’s 2026 tenth-anniversary event marked that original release. Destructoid reported that, for most regions, the event included 21 recolor skins, 15 anniversary loot boxes and 33 developer- or community-made cosmetics. The same report described a larger reward package announced for China, so those figures should not be treated as a universal regional total.
Does the meme ignore Overwatch 2’s problems?
No. The celebration and the criticism coexist. Peres writes from the perspective of someone who stopped investing after the promised PvE mode failed to arrive and who disliked Overwatch 2’s monetization. Those are his judgments, not neutral statements from Blizzard or proof that every player shares them.

His argument is that the game can feel more active after dropping the “2” branding and adding content, even while its earlier promises and business decisions remain part of the history. The copypasta reflects that complicated relationship: affection for the characters and memories survives without requiring an uncritical view of the sequel.

Winston is the immediate image, but the wider reference pool includes the anticipation around new heroes and the lore details that kept players speculating between releases. Peres points to figures such as Junker Queen, D.Mon, Jetpack Cat and the still-unseen Mama Hong as examples of the characters and theories that became part of Overwatch’s long-running fan vocabulary.
That is why the format travels beyond people currently playing. A former player may not know every present balance change, but can still recognize Winston’s silhouette, his barrier and the old feeling of debating which hero belongs in a roster.

How should you read the copypasta’s popularity?
Read it as participatory nostalgia, not evidence of a new official Winston feature or a confirmed change to another game. The posts are fan-made variations that use a shared character to interrupt unrelated discourse. Their success comes from timing, recognizability and the comic overprecision of the description.
In that sense, the copypasta is an unusually efficient anniversary message. It does not ask players to agree about monetization, PvE or the sequel. It only asks whether they remember the super-smart lunar gorilla with the Tesla cannon and dome shield—and most Overwatch players do.

Is Winston’s copypasta an official Blizzard anniversary campaign?
No. The documented trend is a social-media format described in Pedro Peres’s Destructoid feature, not a Blizzard announcement or branded marketing program. Blizzard’s anniversary event provides the timing, while fans supply the joke and its variations.

Did tats create every version of the Winston meme?
The available documentation only establishes that tats (@ltats__) posted the Deadlock example on October 23, 2026. It does not prove that the account originated every earlier or later use of the wording.
Why does the copypasta mention AoE slop?
The phrase makes the fantasy sound like a highly specific balance solution. It contrasts technical game jargon with the inherently ridiculous image of a lunar gorilla, which is what gives the swerve its punch.
Can someone understand the joke without playing Overwatch?
Yes, because the sentence is funny as an abrupt non sequitur even without the reference. Players who know Winston get an additional layer: the weapon, barrier and origin story identify a familiar hero immediately.
