A yellow border can appear when Windows Graphics Capture starts: Windows uses it to indicate that the outlined visual may be shared or recorded. The border is a privacy cue, but it does not identify which app started the capture—and it does not explain every yellow outline. To find the cause, match the border’s appearance to recent actions, then close likely apps one at a time and retest.

What the yellow border means

In Windows Graphics Capture, the visual being captured gets a small yellow border as a reminder that it may be shared or recorded. Microsoft describes this behavior in its Windows Developer Blog. The border alone does not show which process initiated capture, nor does it prove that every yellow outline comes from this feature.

Start with the timing and the area outlined. If it appeared after a screenshot, recording, meeting, screen-share, or remote-support action, capture software is a useful lead. Those clues narrow the search; they are not proof of a specific app.

How to identify the app causing it

  1. Note what the border surrounds and when it begins. Check whether it outlines one window or a whole display, and note what you started immediately beforehand. Windows’ capture indicator marks the visual being captured, so the area and timing can help you narrow the possibilities.
  2. Check for a Snipping Tool capture. Microsoft lists Windows+Shift+S to open the image-capture overlay and Windows+Shift+R to open the video-capture overlay. If the border began after one of these actions, stop or close the capture and see whether it disappears. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
  3. Check running capture and sharing apps. While the border is visible, open Task Manager and look for screen-capture, meeting, streaming, or remote-support apps. Close plausible candidates one at a time, checking whether the border clears after each. Reopen only an app you need to reproduce the issue. A Microsoft Q&A reply recommends checking Task Manager; its examples are not a complete list of possible apps.
  4. Test PowerToys if other apps do not explain it. Quit PowerToys from its system-tray menu and observe whether the border goes away. One Microsoft Q&A respondent reported that this worked on their system and speculated that ZoomIt may have been triggered. That is an individual troubleshooting report, not a confirmed explanation for every case.
  5. Check Windows settings for your build. Search Settings for “Screenshot borders” if you want to see whether that option is available. Do not assume it appears on every Windows release or that changing it will remove every yellow outline. A user report in a PowerToys issue opened in September 2024 says the option was not found on Windows 10; it is not comprehensive official documentation of settings across Windows versions.

How to interpret the likely causes

Lead Evidence and test What it does not establish
Windows screen capture, including Snipping Tool Microsoft documents the yellow indicator for Windows Graphics Capture and describes Snipping Tool’s image and video capture overlays. Match the border’s onset to a capture or sharing action, then stop or close the relevant app. The border does not name the process that initiated capture.
PowerToys or ZoomIt One Microsoft Q&A respondent said quitting PowerToys removed their border and suggested ZoomIt as a possibility. Quit PowerToys from its tray menu and observe. This is an anecdotal report, not a universal or authoritative diagnosis.

If the border remains

The cited Microsoft sources document a capture indicator and practical troubleshooting leads, but they do not establish a universal cause or fix for persistent yellow borders. Record the Windows version and build, whether one window or all displays are outlined, which apps were running when it began, and what happened when you closed each candidate. That information can help narrow the issue without assuming it is a hardware fault, malware, or any single app.
