They are forensic identifiers, not confetti: the tags are intended to leave clues that can connect recovered pieces to the cartridge that dispersed them.
What are the small disks that come out of a TASER?
In a 2024 article, Hackaday’s Al Williams describes TASER cartridges as firing probes and wires while also dispersing small, numbered AFID tags. The abbreviation means “Anti Felony Identification.” Williams describes the tags as carrying serial numbers associated with the cartridge, so investigators may be able to connect a recovered tag to that cartridge. Hackaday’s explanation is a technology article, not an official manufacturer specification.
The disks are propelled and scattered by the cartridge’s propellant when it fires. Their purpose is to leave trace evidence that a cartridge was fired at a location. The bright, confetti-like appearance is incidental to that identification function.
How can AFID tags help an investigation?
A recovered tag may provide a link to a particular cartridge. That can help investigators assess whether a cartridge was fired in a place or incident under investigation. Williams reports two examples: Milwaukee police used tags to track down someone who stole a musician’s Stradivarius violin, and in a homicide investigation, a suspect who tried to vacuum up tags left some behind. Hackaday does not provide case citations or dates for these examples, so they should be understood as accounts reported in that article. Read the reported examples.

What AFID tags do not prove
- They do not necessarily identify the person who fired the device. A tag’s association with a cartridge is not, by itself, proof of who handled or fired it.
- They are not guaranteed to be recovered. The tags are small and can scatter widely, making a search difficult and recovery incomplete.
- They are not a standalone proof of an offense. The article describes them as an investigative clue, not evidence that alone establishes who committed a crime.
Is there a set number of tags in every cartridge?
No fixed count should be assumed. Williams uses “a few dozen” to describe the small disks in modern cartridges, but also cautions that investigators cannot count on a uniform number for every cartridge. The article does not establish a guaranteed quantity or a universal specification across TASER models.
