Pokémon HOME, Pokémon Champions, and Pokémon Sleep were deliberately taken offline for emergency maintenance on October 21, 2026. The strongest explanation is a coordinated security response to two critical PHP vulnerabilities that could permit unauthenticated remote code execution. The Pokémon Company did not publicly say that its services run on PHP, so that technical cause remains a well-supported inference rather than an official confirmation. Reporting that cited the games’ official social accounts said all three services returned on October 22.
Were Pokémon HOME, Champions, and Sleep down for the same reason?
Yes. Pokémon Support listed all three services in one emergency-maintenance notice, indicating a coordinated outage rather than three unrelated app or connection failures. The notice said services would be unavailable while maintenance was in progress and that updates would be posted through each title’s official account.
Pokémon Sleep posted a separate notice saying maintenance began at 2:00 p.m. on October 21 and that no end time had been determined at that point. These were server-side maintenance windows, so reinstalling an app or changing a phone setting would not restore access while the shutdown was active.
What caused the simultaneous outage?
The timing points to urgent security patching. On October 21, the PHP project released fixes for two critical, unauthenticated remote-code-execution vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619. Each received a CVSS v4.0 score of 9.2, and the project told PHP users to update immediately.

One flaw involved out-of-memory corruption; the other involved stale request-owned global state. In a PHP installation serving web requests, either could potentially let an unauthenticated attacker execute code on the server. CISA described the issues as “php2shell,” urged organizations to patch immediately, and advised taking systems offline if they could not be updated.
The PHP releases, the simultaneous shutdown of three Pokémon services, and their restoration the next day make emergency backend remediation the best available explanation. However, Pokémon’s maintenance notice did not identify PHP or disclose its backend architecture. It is therefore inaccurate to state that Pokémon officially confirmed a PHP vulnerability as the cause.

If you are still seeing an outage
- Check the relevant official Pokémon account for a new incident notice.
- Confirm that your app is updated through the iOS App Store or Google Play.
- Try a different network and sign out and back in only after service status reports recovery.
- Do not delete local Sleep data or reset HOME settings as a first response; those steps do not repair a server-side outage.
Was Pokémon hacked, and did users lose their Pokémon?
No cited announcement confirms a breach of Pokémon user data, account theft, or the loss of stored Pokémon. Emergency maintenance can be a precaution taken to patch an exposed system before an attack succeeds, so the shutdown alone is not evidence that customer data was compromised.

HOME transfers and storage depend on the service accepting requests. If a transfer was interrupted during maintenance, wait for the service to return and verify its status in the app before attempting another move. Avoid repeated retries while an incident is active, because they can create confusing pending or error states without changing the server’s availability.
Why did all three services need to be offline?
A shared backend, authentication layer, hosting environment, or security control can create a common maintenance dependency even when the games have different features. Taking dependent services offline lets operators patch, restart, validate, and monitor systems without accepting new requests during the most sensitive part of the work. The public notices do not identify which component was changed.

- Stop troubleshooting the client until the status message says the service is available; server maintenance cannot be fixed by clearing a cache.

- If an error remains after the official recovery announcement, capture the exact message, device, operating-system version, and time before contacting support.

Can I use Pokémon Sleep offline while maintenance is running?
Sleep tracking may continue on the device, but online synchronization and account features can be delayed until the service accepts connections again. Keep the app installed and open it after restoration to allow a normal sync.
Do I need to update PHP to play Pokémon games?
No. The PHP versions in the security advisory are server software versions for operators, not player-facing Pokémon updates. Players should update only the Pokémon app through their platform’s official store.
Why was Pokémon Sleep the last service to return?
The published restoration order placed Champions first, HOME second, and Sleep last, but Pokémon did not provide a technical reason for that sequence. Different systems, checks, or deployment dependencies could affect completion time.
