A PC game can involve four separate things: the store that sold it, the program that installs or starts it, a publisher account or client used for authentication, and the system that stores its saves. They may belong to different companies. That is why a game bought on Steam can still require an EA account or Ubisoft Connect sign-in, while a library aggregator can show the game without owning or launching it for you.
The practical consequences are significant: linking accounts does not merge purchases, a second storefront copy is normally a separate entitlement, and cloud saves are decided game by game. Before buying or moving a game, check the exact store listing, the required account, the supported save service and any cross-progression limits.
Why does Steam open another launcher?
Steam is the storefront and delivery platform for that purchase, but the publisher may still require its own account service for authentication, entitlements, updates or online features. The requirement is title-specific, not a rule that every game from a publisher behaves the same way.

Ubisoft’s treatment of Assassin’s Creed Shadows shows why broad statements can be misleading. In a technical Q&A, Ubisoft answered the question “Do we need the Ubisoft launcher if we buy the game on Steam?” with “You simply need to link your Ubisoft Connect account to Steam.” A later addendum clarified that Steam automatically installs and launches a lightweight Connect component rather than requiring a separate full launcher download. You still need the account link, and another Ubisoft title may use a different arrangement: Ubisoft’s Shadows technical Q&A and addendum.
The four layers behind a “launcher”
- Transaction or redemption: The store account records where you bought or redeemed the game and holds that entitlement.
- Installation and launch: A desktop client downloads files, applies updates and starts the executable. The selling store and the required launch client can be different.
- Publisher identity and services: An EA, Ubisoft or other publisher account can authenticate ownership, manage friends or online services, and enforce a title’s account-linking rules.
- Save system: Saves may be local files, a store’s cloud service, a publisher cloud service, or a game-specific cross-progression system. This layer is independent of the purchase record.
Because these layers are separate, removing a shortcut or closing a client does not remove the account relationship or transfer the license. It also does not guarantee that a save made by one edition can be read by another.
Do linked accounts give me ownership on both stores?
No. Linking accounts lets services communicate; it does not copy an entitlement from one storefront to another. Epic explicitly says that a game bought through another store cannot simply be played through the Epic Games Launcher and that ownership does not transfer: Epic’s ownership and launcher guidance.
The same principle applies in the other direction. EA says a purchase made in the EA app cannot be transferred to Steam. If a title is sold in two stores, buying it a second time normally creates a second store entitlement, even if both copies can be connected to the same publisher account. Confirm the exact edition, downloadable content and account requirement for the game you want rather than treating a linked account as a license conversion.

| Situation | What the link does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Steam purchase that requires a publisher account | Associates your Steam ownership with the publisher identity so the game can authenticate. | It does not create a Steam license for a publisher-store purchase or make every publisher game launch from Steam. |
| Publisher-store purchase linked to a platform | May enable platform sign-in, friends or supported progression. | It does not move the purchase to another storefront. |
| Same game bought on two stores | The publisher may recognize the same account, subject to that title’s rules. | The two purchases are not automatically interchangeable, and DLC or edition entitlements may remain store-specific. |
| Library aggregator connection | Displays games from connected accounts in one catalogue. | It does not issue a new license, install files or a universal save service. |
Why is a unified library not a unified license?
A library app can be a useful index while the original clients remain the systems of record. GOG GALAXY describes integrations that collect connected libraries into one view, but its documentation also notes that the other clients may still be needed for their own installations, updates and cloud saves: GOG GALAXY information.
Think of an aggregator as a dashboard, not a fourth storefront. If you disconnect a Steam, Epic or publisher account, the imported entry can disappear or lose launch functionality without affecting the original purchase. Integration availability can also change, so keep the client that owns the game available for repairs, updates and account recovery.
Where are my saves?
There is no universal PC-game save location or universal cloud policy. The developer decides what a game sends to Steam Cloud, and Steam warns that many games do not store saves there at all: Steam Cloud’s support guidance. Ubisoft similarly describes cloud synchronization only for supported titles. A game can therefore save locally even when its installation came from Steam, or use a publisher service instead of the store’s cloud.
A cloud icon or an enabled setting is not proof that every save has uploaded. Offline play can delay synchronization, and a save that never reached the cloud may be recoverable only from the old computer. Epic also cautions that changing cloud-save settings while using multiple machines can create conflicts.

A cautious save-transfer workflow
- Identify the game’s method. Read the official support page or the game’s settings to determine whether it uses local files, Steam Cloud, Epic cloud saves or a named publisher cross-progression feature. Do not assume that two store editions use the same path or format.
- Confirm the account identity. Sign in to the publisher account actually linked to the old installation. A second account with the same email address, a changed console link or an old social login can lead to an apparently empty progression profile. EA’s linking instructions and Ubisoft’s cross-progression guidance both make the linked account material.
- Bring the old machine online. Launch the game and allow it to reach its normal menu, then wait for the store or publisher client to report that synchronization is complete. Do not wipe the machine while it is offline or showing a pending conflict.
- Make an independent copy. Copy the game’s local save directory to another disk before reinstalling Windows, changing stores or accepting a cloud-conflict prompt. The exact folder differs by game and may be under a user profile, documents directory or a publisher-specific data folder; use the game’s official instructions rather than a generic path.
- Install the intended edition. Sign in to the store account that owns that edition, install the required client or component and link the same publisher account. Installing a second store copy does not automatically import the first store’s entitlement.
- Enable only the documented cloud feature. In Steam, inspect the game’s Properties and its Steam Cloud status. In the Epic Games Launcher or publisher client, check the account’s cloud-save control and the game’s support page. Avoid toggling settings repeatedly on multiple computers while a conflict is unresolved.
- Resolve conflicts conservatively. Keep copies of both versions, compare their dates and progress, and choose the known-good file. If the cloud copy is older, replacing the local file can destroy newer progress; if the local file is missing, the cloud may be the only remaining copy.
- Test the result without deleting the backup. Start the game, load the expected profile and make a small new save. Keep the independent backup until the new installation has synchronized and can reload that save after a restart.
These steps protect against the most common failure—mistaking a successful installation for a successful save transfer. They cannot restore a save that was deleted locally and never synchronized, and they cannot make an unsupported cross-progression feature work.
Will linking accounts move my progress between PC and console?
Only when the specific game supports cross-progression and the destination platform has the required ownership. Ubisoft says cross-play and cross-progression vary by game and platform, and that the player must own the game on the destination platform: Ubisoft’s cross-play and cross-progression guidance.
Account linking alone is therefore not a migration promise. A game may share a character or campaign profile across supported platforms while keeping purchases, downloadable content, currencies or platform achievements separate. Check the game’s own support page for the exact platforms, editions and restrictions before buying a second copy for progression continuity.
Which purchase and launcher arrangement is least confusing?
There is no universally best storefront; the trade-off is between convenience, account requirements, offline behavior and where the entitlement is held. Compare the exact title rather than choosing from a publisher-wide assumption.

| Choice | Check before buying | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Steam edition that depends on EA | Third-party-DRM notice, EA app requirement, required EA account and the service that handles progression. | Steam ownership does not eliminate the publisher account or guarantee that another edition’s saves and DLC are recognized. |
| Steam edition that connects to Ubisoft | Whether the game installs a full client or a lightweight component, and which Ubisoft account will be linked. | The arrangement is title-specific; the Shadows clarification should not be generalized to every Ubisoft game. |
| Publisher storefront | Where the entitlement is recorded, whether another platform is required, and whether cross-progression is supported. | The purchase normally cannot be transferred to Steam or another storefront. |
| GOG edition, where available | Whether the game is DRM-free, whether an optional client is useful, and which cloud or multiplayer features remain. | GOG says its purchases do not include Steam keys. Offline installers do not turn into a Steam license: GOG’s about page. |
| Unified library application | Whether the needed integrations still work and which original clients must remain installed. | It is a catalogue and launch convenience, not a replacement for platform-specific installs, updates or cloud saves. |
How does offline play differ between launchers?
Offline support is a property of the particular client and game, not a benefit that automatically follows the purchase. EA’s documented offline mode requires an initial online launch and, for eligible games, allows offline play for 30 days from the last online launch. That is an EA-app rule, not a PC-wide limit: EA’s offline-mode guidance.
GOG documents downloadable offline installers for its games, but an offline installer does not make online-only multiplayer, authentication or services available without a connection. Steam and other clients can likewise have separate offline prerequisites. Before travelling, launch the game online, install any required publisher component, and verify that the title itself supports the modes you need offline.
What should I check before changing stores or computers?
Use this short decision checklist before committing to a purchase or migration:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Read the exact store listing for third-party-DRM, required launchers and account links.
- Write down which account owns the purchase and which publisher account is linked.
- Check whether the desired edition includes the DLC and language packs you need.
- Find the game’s official save and cloud documentation; do not rely on the store name alone.
- Verify cross-progression separately for every source and destination platform.
- Synchronize while online, then make a local backup before uninstalling or wiping anything.
- Keep the original client available for updates, repairs, cloud conflicts and account recovery.
- Recheck the game’s current requirements before purchase because launcher, account and offline policies can change.
The reliable mental model is simple: a storefront sells an entitlement, a launcher delivers or starts software, a publisher account supplies identity and services, and a save system stores progress. Once those are treated as separate layers, a second launcher is understandable—and you can avoid paying twice, linking the wrong account or deleting the only copy of a save.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a required publisher launcher the same thing as third-party DRM?
Not always. A publisher client may provide sign-in, updates or online services, while a store listing’s third-party-DRM notice describes an additional access-control component; a single game can have one, the other or both. The only dependable answer is the current listing and support page for that title.
Can I install a second storefront copy and keep the same DLC?
Do not assume so. DLC entitlement is commonly checked by the store or platform that sold it, and editions can use different account records; verify the game’s edition and DLC policy before buying another copy. Linking the same publisher account may identify you without granting the other store’s add-ons.
How can I tell which publisher account my game is using?
Open the publisher client or the game’s account settings and note the signed-in address or account ID before unlinking anything. If the account is unclear, use the publisher’s account-recovery or support process first; creating a new link can leave progression attached to the old identity.
