One hour of audio can occupy about 30 MB or about 600 MB because file size is driven primarily by its encoded bitrate, not by playing time alone. The practical estimate is file size ≈ bitrate × seconds ÷ 8. At 66.7 kbps, one hour is roughly 30 MB; at 1,333 kbps, it is roughly 600 MB. The codec, sample rate, bit depth, number of channels and small container overhead then move the result up or down. A one-hour, uncompressed CD-quality stereo recording is about 635 MB before overhead, while a lossy AAC or MP3 version can be many times smaller. Your music app’s download-quality setting therefore changes both storage consumption and, when streaming, cellular-data use.

What determines the size of one hour of audio?

Bitrate is the direct multiplier. It describes how many bits the encoder stores or transmits each second, so doubling the bitrate approximately doubles the file size for the same duration. Duration matters, but two one-hour files can be radically different when one uses a low compressed bitrate and the other preserves high-resolution audio.

For one hour, duration is 3,600 seconds. The examples below use decimal megabytes (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes), so a phone’s storage display may differ slightly if it reports binary units.

Audio example Bitrate or calculation Approximate size for one hour
Small compressed file 66.7 kbps 30 MB
High-bitrate encoded file 1,333 kbps 600 MB
CD-quality stereo PCM 44,100 samples/second × 16 bits × 2 channels = 1,411.2 kbps 635 MB before container overhead

The 30 MB and 600 MB figures are not contradictory measurements of the same format. They represent different amounts of data retained for every second of sound. The higher-rate file can preserve more detail, use less aggressive compression, or be uncompressed.

How do sample rate, bit depth and channels increase uncompressed audio size?

For uncompressed PCM, the data rate is determined mathematically by three values: sample rate, bit depth and channel count. The sample rate is the number of measurements taken each second; bit depth is the number of bits used for each measurement; channels indicate whether the file is mono, stereo or multichannel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CD standard illustrates the calculation: 44.1 kHz × 16 bits × two stereo channels equals 1,411,200 bits per second, or 1,411.2 kbps. Multiplying by 3,600 seconds and dividing by eight gives about 635 MB per hour, before headers and other container information. A mono recording at the same sample rate and bit depth uses half the PCM data because it has one channel instead of two.

Why higher-resolution files grow quickly

Increasing any one of the three PCM parameters raises the raw data rate. Moving from 16-bit to 24-bit adds half again as many bits per sample. Raising the sample rate from 44.1 kHz to 96 or 192 kHz creates more samples every second. Adding channels multiplies the result. These changes affect uncompressed files directly and also give a lossless encoder more source data to represent.

High-resolution services describe quality with both bit depth and sample rate. Apple Music’s catalog includes AAC and ALAC from 16-bit/44.1 kHz through 24-bit/192 kHz. Its Lossless setting reaches 24-bit/48 kHz, while Hi-Res Lossless reaches 24-bit/192 kHz. The higher settings require more storage and network data than standard compressed streams.

What is the difference between lossy and lossless audio?

Lossy compression discards some audio information to achieve a much smaller file. Lossless compression reduces redundancy while preserving every bit of the original when decoded. The choice explains why two files with the same duration can have very different sizes.

Lossy codecs: AAC and MP3

AAC and MP3 are common lossy formats. Their encoders remove information judged less important to perception, then store the remaining signal at a selected bitrate. Lower bitrates save space and bandwidth; higher bitrates generally retain more detail but create larger files. Apple Podcasts for Creators recommends stereo MP3 at 128–256 kbps, a practical range for spoken or general program delivery.

Lossy compression is useful when a phone has limited free space, when downloads must be quick, or when mobile data is expensive. The trade-off is that the removed information cannot be recovered by converting the file to a higher bitrate later. Re-encoding an already lossy file can discard additional information.

Lossless codecs: FLAC and ALAC

FLAC and ALAC preserve the original data. Apple defines lossless compression as “a form of compression that preserves all of the original data.” The IETF’s RFC 9639 specifies FLAC as a lossless codec designed to reduce storage while preserving information. Lossless files are smaller than raw PCM but substantially larger than typical AAC or MP3 encodes.

Use lossless when you are archiving a master, editing, converting to another format, or require bit-for-bit recovery. It does not make a recording more detailed than its source: a lossless copy of a 16-bit/44.1 kHz master remains that resolution. It simply avoids additional loss during storage and decoding.

Why can the same music app download be 9 MB, 51 MB or 153 MB?

Amazon Music gives a useful three-and-a-half-minute scale example: about 9 MB for SD lossy, 51 MB for HD lossless at 44.1 kHz, and 153 MB for Ultra HD lossless at its maximum resolution. The service attributes the differences to bit depth, sampling frequency and codec. These are illustrative values, not a promise that every track will have exactly those sizes; content and encoding settings change the result.

Scaled to an hour, a 3.5-minute track is multiplied by about 17.14. That makes the examples roughly 154 MB, 874 MB and 2.6 GB respectively if the same average rates continued for the whole hour. They demonstrate why a high-resolution album can consume gigabytes even though each song is only a few minutes long.

How do phone and streaming settings change storage and data use?

Quality controls usually select a codec, bitrate, or resolution for downloads and cellular playback. Choosing a lossless or high-resolution option increases the amount downloaded for every minute and therefore uses more device space and network data. Choosing a compressed option reduces both, at the cost of discarded information.

Apple Music settings

On current iPhone software, open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality to review Lossless Audio and cellular or Wi-Fi download choices. The exact labels can vary by iOS release, but the relevant choices are standard quality, Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless. Check the download setting separately from streaming if you want to conserve storage while allowing higher quality on Wi-Fi.

Apple notes that Bluetooth playback is not lossless. Listening above 48 kHz on an iPhone may require an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC), so selecting 24-bit/192 kHz does not guarantee that wireless headphones receive a bit-for-bit signal. The setting can still increase the downloaded file size even when the playback chain cannot reproduce the full resolution.

Other music apps

Open the app’s Audio Quality, Download Quality or Data Saver page and look for separate controls for Wi-Fi, mobile data and downloads. A setting named “High,” “HD,” “Lossless” or “Ultra HD” is not a universal bitrate; compare the app’s stated codec, sample rate and bit depth. If the app reports only a quality name, use a downloaded track’s file information to see its actual duration and bitrate.

Which format should you choose for a phone?

There is no universal best format. Decide whether your priority is storage efficiency, preservation, compatibility, bandwidth or future editing, then choose the least demanding option that satisfies it.

How can you estimate storage before downloading an hour?

Use the app’s displayed bitrate when it provides one, then apply the formula. For a one-hour file, divide the bitrate in kilobits per second by 8 and multiply by 3,600, then divide by 1,000 to express the result in decimal megabytes. This simplifies to approximately 0.45 × bitrate in kbps megabytes per hour.

  1. Find the stated or measured bitrate, such as 128 kbps, 256 kbps or 1,411.2 kbps.
  2. Multiply that number by 0.45 to estimate megabytes per hour.
  3. Multiply the hourly result by the number of hours you plan to keep offline.
  4. Leave extra space for tags, cover art, container overhead and tracks whose average bitrate is higher than the label suggests.

Examples: 128 kbps is about 58 MB per hour; 256 kbps is about 115 MB; 1,411.2 kbps is about 635 MB. These are estimates, not guarantees of an app’s exact download size.

Why does a downloaded file differ slightly from the bitrate calculation?

The formula describes the audio payload. Real files also contain a container, metadata, cover art and encoder headers. The bitrate shown by an app may be an average, and some formats vary the number of bits used from moment to moment. Consequently, two tracks with the same nominal setting and duration can occupy slightly different amounts of space.

Lossless encoders also achieve different compression ratios depending on the recording. A quiet, repetitive signal can compress more than a dense, complex performance, even though both remain bit-for-bit recoverable. For planning, use the service’s own size estimate when available and treat a bitrate calculation as a capacity check.

  • Switch future downloads to a compressed AAC or MP3 quality on the app’s download page.
  • Remove offline copies and stream over Wi-Fi when you do not need permanent access.
  • Keep lossless files for recordings you edit or archive, and use compressed copies for routine listening.
  • Review the app’s storage-management screen after changing quality; existing downloads normally remain at their original resolution until deleted and downloaded again.
  • Watch cellular-data settings separately, because reducing storage quality does not automatically change another app’s streaming setting.

The important distinction is that changing quality affects new transfers. A 600 MB file already on the phone does not shrink merely because the app now prefers a 30 MB-per-hour setting; it must be replaced by a newly encoded or newly downloaded version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are MB and MiB the same when my phone reports audio size?

No. The calculations above use decimal MB, where 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. Operating systems sometimes display binary MiB (1,048,576 bytes) while still labeling it MB, so the on-device number can look slightly smaller than a decimal estimate.

Can I make a lossless file smaller by converting it to another lossless format?

You may save a little space because FLAC and ALAC use different compression methods, but neither can approach typical lossy sizes without removing information. Converting FLAC to ALAC, or the reverse, preserves the audio but does not increase its quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a higher bitrate always sound better?

A higher bitrate gives an encoder more data and can preserve more quality, but the source recording, codec and listening equipment still matter. Increasing the setting cannot restore detail that was already removed from an earlier lossy encode.

How much space does ten hours at 256 kbps need?

Using the same estimate, 256 kbps is about 115 MB per hour, so ten hours is roughly 1.15 GB in decimal units. Metadata and variation in actual bitrate can move the final total modestly.
