The company describes repeated exploration of shape, color, typography, and movement, but gives no exact timeline or measured results.
Why Microsoft redesigned the Copilot icon
In Lucas Fitzpatrick’s October 5, 2026 Microsoft Design article, Microsoft says the Copilot experience was changing and the icon looked different depending on where people encountered it. The redesign aimed to give Copilot a more consistent identity across those contexts.
Microsoft also wanted the icon to do more than identify the product. It asked whether the mark could “join the conversation” by communicating during the brief interval between a user’s request and Copilot’s response. That goal made motion part of the design problem, alongside recognition and consistency.
How the new mark was designed
Two forms built around a familiar shape
The mark combines two distinct forms into one silhouette. Microsoft says the team began with the square, a familiar element in its visual language, because the icon needed to remain legible while moving. Designers explored different proportions, angles, and spacing: some versions felt insufficiently dynamic, while others became too complex.

Color and type across contexts
The color treatment keeps a connection to Copilot’s earlier gradient, while allowing color to shift and blend in different contexts. The team examined color on screens, in print, and in physical materials. For the wordmark, Microsoft paired Segoe with Segoe Serif: the company describes the sans-serif as open and easy to read, and the serif as a source of personality.

- Retrieval: Copilot is pulling context from files and work.
The intended effect is a familiar motion language across the Copilot ecosystem, including Windows, Word, and PowerPoint. These labels describe Microsoft’s design intent; its article does not report user testing showing whether people interpret the gestures as intended.
Why the process took months
Microsoft’s explanation is that small choices had to work together across the identity system, not just look appealing on their own. The team printed icons to check how they held up on paper, debated the weight of a curve, tested many color and form studies, and sometimes changed direction. Some studies looked attractive in isolation but did not fit alongside the rest of the system.

Fitzpatrick captures the contrast between the design time and the product interaction: “Copilot can work through a request in seconds. Deciding how those seconds should look and feel took a room of brand, product, and motion designers months.”

What Microsoft has—and has not—reported
“Months” is the full duration Microsoft gives. The article does not name a start or end date, specify how many months, or state a budget. It also reports no user study, recognition or usability measure, or business outcome, so the redesign’s goals should not be mistaken for independently demonstrated improvements.
Microsoft credits designers across COLLINS, Koto, and Microsoft. Its account explains the intended rationale and process; it does not provide an independent evaluation of the new icon.
