Microsoft withheld the Windows 11 24H2 upgrade from some ASUS laptops because installation could fail with a blue screen. The affected models named in Microsoft’s reproduced guidance are the ASUS X415KA and X515KA running BIOS versions below 311; the recommended fix was an ASUS BIOS update delivered through Windows Update.
What “blocked” means
Microsoft’s safeguard holds prevent a device with a known compatibility issue from being offered a new Windows version through Windows Update. A hold does not mean Microsoft disabled the computer or that every ASUS PC is incompatible. It temporarily withholds the upgrade from devices identified as potentially affected. Microsoft’s safeguard-hold guidance explains that these protections are based on quality and compatibility data.
Which ASUS devices were affected
Microsoft Q&A reproduces guidance for safeguard ID 54157480. It names ASUS X415KA and X515KA devices with BIOS versions below 311. The reported problem was that Windows 11 24H2 setup could fail to complete and show a blue screen. The guidance does not establish that every unit of these models, or every ASUS computer, was affected. The Microsoft Q&A entry is the source for these model and firmware details.
How to check and resolve the issue
- Check your model. In Windows, open Settings > System > About and look under Device specifications for the model. The specific models named in the guidance are X415KA and X515KA.
- Check the BIOS version. Search Windows for System Information, open it, and find BIOS Version/Date. The reported safeguard applied to versions below 311 on the named models.
- Install the ASUS BIOS update offered through Windows Update. Microsoft’s reproduced guidance describes it as a Critical Update and recommends installing the latest BIOS update for the device. Follow the update’s instructions and keep the laptop connected to power during firmware installation.
- Let Windows Update offer the feature update when the hold is cleared. The guidance says the safeguard would be lifted gradually as devices received the BIOS update; it does not give a fixed release date for an individual device.
If Windows Update still does not offer 24H2, do not assume this ASUS issue is the cause. The checked sources do not establish that all missing Windows 11 upgrade offers on ASUS PCs share this safeguard.

Why you should not force the upgrade
Microsoft says a safeguard may be used when validation finds a serious compatibility problem, such as a failed upgrade or rollback, data loss, loss of connectivity, or loss of key functionality, and a workaround is not immediately available. Microsoft advises waiting for the issue to be resolved and the hold released rather than manually installing the feature update. Bypassing a hold can expose a device to the known problem; Microsoft says opting out is intended for validation in IT environments, not as a routine fix. As of October 8, 2026, Microsoft’s Windows 11 24H2 release-health page lists 25H2 as the latest available version. It says unmanaged Home and Pro devices running 24H2 receive the 25H2 update automatically, and that Home and Pro editions of 24H2 reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. These dates and upgrade statements apply to the editions and device-management status specified by Microsoft.
