Meta’s AI spending affects free cash flow because servers, data centers and network infrastructure require large upfront cash outlays, and Meta deducts property-and-equipment purchases and finance-lease principal payments when it calculates free cash flow. That pressure is visible in the figures: Meta reported $43.585 billion of free cash flow for 2025, but negative $2.12 billion for the third quarter of 2026. The quarterly result does not by itself establish a lasting trend; investors need to weigh capital spending against operating cash generation, the returns Meta says AI is producing, and the company’s ability to finance investment over time.

What does free cash flow measure at Meta?

Meta defines free cash flow (FCF) as net cash provided by operating activities minus purchases of property and equipment and principal payments on finance leases. In plain terms, it starts with cash generated by operations and subtracts two categories of cash payments connected to long-lived assets and leased equipment. Meta reported these figures in its 2025 Form 10-K:

2025 cash-flow item Amount
Net cash provided by operating activities $115.80 billion
Purchases of property and equipment $69.691 billion
Finance-lease principal payments $2.524 billion
Free cash flow $43.585 billion

The calculation is $115.80 billion minus $69.691 billion minus $2.524 billion, giving $43.585 billion. This makes the direct connection clear: when infrastructure purchases rise faster than operating cash generation, less cash remains under Meta’s FCF definition. FCF can still be positive while falling sharply, or turn negative for a period when the deductions exceed operating cash flow.

Meta’s 10-K also cautions that FCF is a supplemental non-GAAP measure, not a substitute for GAAP operating cash flow. It is not necessarily residual cash available for discretionary spending: the calculation excludes contractual commitments and does not capture every future cash obligation. Nor is it automatically comparable with another company’s FCF, because companies can define and present the measure differently. Investors should use Meta’s stated formula when assessing its trend rather than assuming every company’s reported FCF means the same thing.

Why does AI investment reduce free cash flow?

Training and running AI systems requires computing capacity, along with the facilities and networking needed to support it. Meta’s purchases of servers, data centers and network infrastructure are investing cash outflows. Because property-and-equipment purchases are subtracted in the company’s FCF reconciliation, a larger infrastructure build can reduce FCF even if the company’s operating business is generating substantial cash.

That is a timing difference as well as a spending decision. Meta pays for infrastructure as it builds or expands capacity; any financial return from using that capacity may arrive later. In the meantime, those cash purchases affect FCF. The infrastructure may support multiple company needs, so it would be too strong to assume that every dollar of Meta’s property-and-equipment spending is exclusively for AI. Meta’s 2025 10-K says the $69.69 billion of property-and-equipment purchases included servers, data centers and network infrastructure.

The FCF deduction is not itself an estimate of how much AI will ultimately cost, nor does it measure whether the investment is successful. It records a defined cash-flow effect in the period. To assess whether that spending makes financial sense, investors also need evidence about operating cash generation, how well the infrastructure is used, and whether AI-related improvements or products generate enough economic benefit over time.

How much did Meta’s cash flow change in 2026?

The reported figures show a sharp quarterly change alongside a still-positive nine-month total. Meta’s Q2 2026 release reported $31.08 billion in capital expenditures and $784 million in FCF. In Q3, capital expenditures rose to $34.91 billion while operating cash flow was $32.79 billion; reported FCF was negative $2.12 billion. For the first nine months of 2026, Meta reported $83.055 billion of capital expenditures and $11.049 billion of FCF.

Period Reported capital expenditures Reported free cash flow What the figures show
Q2 2026 $31.08 billion $784 million FCF remained slightly positive
Q3 2026 $34.91 billion Negative $2.12 billion FCF was negative for the quarter
First nine months of 2026 $83.055 billion $11.049 billion FCF remained positive across the period

The quarterly and nine-month figures answer different questions. Q3 indicates that in that quarter the reported infrastructure outlay was large enough to coincide with negative FCF. The nine-month total shows that the preceding quarters partly offset that result, leaving FCF positive over the broader period. A single negative quarter is therefore not proof that Meta has entered a permanent negative-cash-flow pattern. Investors should watch whether negative quarters recur and how they affect the full-year and longer-term figures.

Meta’s latest 2026 guidance calls for capital expenditures of $135 billion to $145 billion, narrowed from a prior range of $130 billion to $145 billion. That is management guidance, not a reported outcome. Management also says it expects to keep investing aggressively in core and emerging AI initiatives beyond 2026, so the investment question extends beyond one quarter or the current year.

Why is Meta spending so much on AI?

Meta’s stated rationale combines improvements to its existing business with the development of potential future opportunities. Management says AI investments are already delivering incremental advertising revenue through stronger engagement, better recommendations and more efficient monetization. These are management’s claims about the investment’s contribution, not independently verified estimates of AI’s revenue or profit.

Meta also says that investments by Meta Superintelligence Labs are building infrastructure for new revenue opportunities and internal efficiencies. It cautions that returns on this work will take longer than returns from investment in the core business. That distinction matters: improvements to advertising may be evaluated through their effect on the established business, while newer initiatives may require a longer wait before investors can judge whether they produce material returns.

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: “We hit major milestones this quarter toward delivering personal superintelligence for everyone – including launching Muse and Muse Wonder, our first frontier model.” The statement describes management’s goals and product milestones; it does not, on its own, establish how much revenue or cash flow those models will produce.

Investors should keep the time horizon and type of expected return in view. Stronger ad engagement or recommendations could support the existing advertising business, while new AI products or internal efficiencies represent different potential paths to value. The figures provided do not quantify how much of Meta’s reported revenue or cash flow is attributable to AI, or when newer initiatives will generate returns. Those questions require evidence beyond the headline spending totals.

Does negative quarterly free cash flow mean Meta is in financial trouble?

Not on its own. Negative FCF for one quarter means Meta’s cash-flow calculation was below zero for that period; it does not establish that the company cannot meet its obligations, that operating cash flow has disappeared, or that every later quarter will also be negative. In Q3 2026, Meta reported $32.79 billion of operating cash flow, while the quarter’s reported capital expenditures were $34.91 billion and FCF was negative $2.12 billion. The nine-month FCF total was still positive at $11.049 billion.

The concern would grow if capital spending stayed above operating cash generation over an extended period. Sustained pressure could increase reliance on cash balances or external financing, including debt or equity financing. That is a risk to monitor, not a conclusion established by one quarter’s result. The available figures do not provide a complete assessment of Meta’s liquidity or future financing needs, so investors should avoid treating the negative Q3 FCF figure as a standalone solvency verdict.

FCF also should not be confused with earnings or operating cash flow. It is a supplemental cash measure after specific deductions. A company can report substantial operating cash flow while producing low or negative FCF when it is making large infrastructure investments. Conversely, positive FCF does not mean all future spending commitments have already been accounted for in that measure.

How should investors judge whether the AI spending is paying off?

Rather than looking for a single “AI return” number, investors can track a set of connected indicators. Each addresses a different part of the investment case, and no one metric proves that the spending is creating value.

1. Capex intensity and FCF conversion

Compare infrastructure spending with operating cash flow and FCF over several reporting periods. A rising capex burden can reduce the share of operating cash flow that remains as FCF. The key question is whether operating cash generation eventually grows enough to support the investment while leaving cash flow at a level investors consider sustainable. Meta’s FCF definition should be used consistently in this comparison.

2. Operating-cash-flow growth

FCF can fall because investment rises even while the underlying business generates more cash. Tracking operating cash flow alongside FCF helps separate those effects. If operating cash flow strengthens while FCF weakens, investment spending may be absorbing the additional cash; if both weaken, the issue may extend beyond capital intensity.

3. Engagement, recommendations and ad monetization

Meta’s stated advertising thesis depends on AI helping people engage with its services, improving recommendations and making advertising more effective to monetize. Investors should look for company-reported evidence that these mechanisms are improving the business, rather than assuming that high infrastructure spending proves they are working. Management has not provided a quantified AI-specific return figure in the information discussed here.

4. Infrastructure utilization and depreciation burden

Spending creates capacity, but the financial case depends in part on putting that capacity to productive use. Investors can assess whether the company gives evidence that infrastructure is supporting its services and initiatives, and consider how the costs of long-lived assets affect reported results over time. Capital purchases affect cash flow when paid; depreciation is an accounting expense allocated over an asset’s useful life. These are related aspects of investment, but they are not the same cash-flow measure.

5. Liquidity and financing

If capex remains high, investors should consider the company’s balance-sheet liquidity and whether external financing becomes more important. A negative FCF quarter alone does not establish a financing shortfall, but sustained spending above operating cash generation could make the funding mix more consequential. The Q3 and nine-month figures show why the period measured matters when making that assessment.

6. Timing and credibility of expected returns

Management says the newer AI initiatives will take longer to return value than core-business investments. Investors can therefore distinguish near-term claims about advertising improvements from longer-term expectations for new products and internal efficiencies. The further away a return is, the more important it is to update expectations as evidence arrives rather than treating the spending plan or product milestones as proof of future cash generation.

What other factors can distort a simple AI-spending comparison?

First, capital expenditure and FCF are not interchangeable. Meta’s 2025 FCF formula subtracts property-and-equipment purchases and finance-lease principal payments from operating cash flow, while the 2026 figures above are reported capex and FCF figures for their stated periods. Keep the company’s definitions and reporting periods attached to the numbers instead of assuming that one quarter’s capex-to-FCF arithmetic explains every movement.

Second, not every change in expenses should be attributed to AI. Meta’s Q3 release included a $9.89 billion legal charge. That charge is a reminder that reported expense changes can reflect factors unrelated to infrastructure investment; it would be inaccurate to explain all year-over-year expense growth as an AI cost.

Third, management’s return thesis is not the same as a measured, independently established return. Meta’s statements about engagement, recommendations, monetization, future opportunities and internal efficiencies are relevant to understanding why it is investing, but investors still have to evaluate subsequent financial evidence. The figures here establish the scale of spending and its FCF effect; they do not isolate a complete AI return on investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Meta count as free cash flow?

Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K defines it as operating cash flow less property-and-equipment purchases and finance-lease principal payments. It is a supplemental non-GAAP measure, so it should be read alongside the company’s GAAP cash-flow figures.

Can Meta have positive earnings but negative free cash flow?

Yes. Earnings and free cash flow are different measures: Meta’s FCF calculation subtracts specified cash investment payments from operating cash flow, so a large infrastructure build can put FCF below zero for a period even when the company has a cash-generating operating business.

Does Meta’s AI spending all go to data centers?

The cited 2025 10-K says property-and-equipment purchases included servers, data centers and network infrastructure. It does not establish that all of those purchases were exclusively for AI.

Why can two companies report different free cash flow from similar businesses?

FCF is not standardized as a GAAP measure, and companies may define it differently. Meta itself cautions that its measure may not be comparable across companies, so investors should check each company’s reconciliation before comparing totals.
