“Live” sports streams are not necessarily simultaneous with the event. The delay—often called glass-to-glass latency—is the time between a frame being captured and that frame appearing on your screen. Encoding, packaging, delivery, and playback buffering all add time, so a faster home connection cannot erase delay already introduced upstream.
Why is my live sports stream behind?
A live broadcast has to travel through a chain of systems before you see it. Each stage can add a little time, and the total is the stream’s glass-to-glass latency. That differs from network latency, which measures how long data takes to travel through a network; a speed test or ping does not measure the full journey from camera to screen. The IETF explains this distinction in RFC 9317.
Capture and encoding
The production system encodes video captured at the event. Encoding and other processing take time, and if processing falls behind, more delay can accumulate.
Packaging into segments
With conventional HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), video is packaged into segments. Apple’s 2019 WWDC explanation described regular HLS using six-second segments: a segment must be formed before it can be published and played. That six-second figure describes the regular-HLS design discussed in that session, not every current stream. Apple’s WWDC19 session explains the process.

Playlist updates and requests
The player checks a playlist to discover newly available segments, then requests the media. In regular HLS, playlist polling, request round trips, and delivery through a content delivery network (CDN) add time after the segment is created.
Ingest, processing, and delivery
The streaming provider receives the feed, processes or transcodes it, packages it for playback, and distributes it through its delivery infrastructure. Congestion or packet loss can slow delivery. A fast connection to your router does not control how quickly the provider performs these steps. Mux’s explanation of glass-to-glass latency describes the stages and notes that its standard HLS estimate is greater than 20 seconds, typically about 25 to 30 seconds. That is a Mux estimate for standard HLS, not a universal figure for sports streams.
Playback buffering
The player keeps a buffer of video ready so a brief slowdown does not immediately interrupt playback. A larger cushion can make viewing more robust, but it also keeps the picture farther behind the live event. The provider and player balance delay against the risk of stuttering or rebuffering.

Why do I hear the crowd before I see the play?
Your stream may be behind nearby television viewers or other people watching the same event through a different delivery path. The IETF points to this familiar effect: a nearby crowd can react to an important play before it appears on your screen, or a social-media post can spoil it first. Different streaming clients also do not necessarily stay synchronized to the same point in wall-clock time, so a friend’s feed can be ahead of yours.

What does low-latency streaming change?
Regular HLS is designed to distribute video robustly and at scale, but waiting for full segments and playlist updates costs time. Low-latency formats reduce some of that waiting by making smaller pieces of video available sooner.

LL-HLS
Apple’s Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) uses features including partial segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints, and rendition reports. These let a player learn about and request video sooner than it would with full-segment delivery. The provider’s backend and content-delivery systems must support the features; if they do not, a client may fall back to regular-latency HLS. See Apple’s LL-HLS explanation.
LL-DASH and CMAF chunks
Low-Latency DASH (LL-DASH), like LL-HLS, can use CMAF chunks smaller than a full segment. The IETF explains that this can reduce delay without relying only on very short full segments, which may require more frequent intra-coded frames and harm encoding efficiency or picture quality. Low latency therefore depends on more than a setting in the app: the service infrastructure and the player both need to support the delivery method. What latency figures mean
Latency numbers are meaningful only with their scope and measurement attached. The IETF’s 2022 RFC uses “under 10 seconds” as a target category for low-latency live delivery and “under 1 second” for ultra-low-latency delivery; these are category definitions, not guarantees for a particular sports service. The RFC also notes that network variation makes the ultra-low-latency target challenging for many users.

Apple’s 2019 LL-HLS design target was one to two seconds from live at scale over the public internet. That was a design target stated in a 2019 session, not a current measured result for every service. In the same session, Apple’s presenter described two to eight seconds as the delay range of the television broadcasting services he considered the contemporary gold standard; that is likewise a dated observation, not a universal benchmark today.
For another illustration, Kaltura reported its own internal tests in 2025: streams with two-second segments typically had 10–15 seconds of latency, four-second segments typically had 18–23 seconds, and six-second segments typically had 25–30 seconds. Kaltura says results can vary with network quality, device capabilities, and player buffering. These figures are vendor test examples, not a prediction for your app. Kaltura’s overview provides the context.
How can I reduce the delay?
- Look for a low-latency option. Check the streaming app’s settings or help pages for a low-latency or reduced-delay mode. Availability depends on the service and event; there is no common menu label established for all sports apps.
- Use a supported, current player and device. If the service specifies device or app support, meet those requirements. Low-latency delivery requires support along the path, and an unsupported client may receive regular-latency playback instead.
- Improve local connection consistency if Wi-Fi playback is unstable. Reduce competing traffic or move closer to the access point. If both your device and router support wired networking, you can try a Cat 6 Ethernet cable to address possible Wi-Fi variability. It is an optional troubleshooting step, not a demonstrated guarantee of lower sports-stream latency, and it cannot remove delay already added by the broadcaster or streaming provider.
- Switch back to regular playback if low latency stutters. If the app offers both modes and the low-latency stream repeatedly buffers, try the regular option. A smaller buffer leaves less room to absorb brief delivery slowdowns.
- Ask the provider about the event’s delivery mode. If the stream remains delayed across devices on a stable connection, ask whether that specific event is being delivered in low-latency mode. Encoding, packaging, CDN delivery, and player decisions on the provider side are not settings you can change at home.
Why can low latency be less stable?
A player that stays close to the live edge has less stored video to cover interruptions. If packets arrive late or network conditions change, it may stutter or rebuffer sooner than a stream with a larger cushion. The trade-off can also involve picture quality, bitrate flexibility, device compatibility, and service cost or availability. The exact balance depends on the service’s implementation and the event.

Some tuning advice found in streaming documentation is for service operators, not viewers. For example, AWS’s suggestions for shorter fragments, lower bitrate, fewer playlist fragments, and smaller buffers apply to developers configuring Kinesis Video Streams playback—not arbitrary consumer sports apps. AWS also warns that these adjustments can reduce quality, cause more frequent rebuffering, or skip fragments. AWS’s low-latency guidance describes those operator-side trade-offs.
Why is my friend’s stream ahead of mine?
Two viewers can receive the same event through different paths and be at different distances from the live edge. Their providers, player buffers, devices, network conditions, or support for low-latency delivery may differ. Unless both services publish latency figures measured with the same method, for the same event, region, device, and time, a headline number is not a reliable way to compare them.
