A slow USB copy can be caused by the flash drive, the computer’s port, a hub or adapter, or the files being copied. The USB generation printed on a device describes a connection capability—not the speed you are guaranteed to see in a file transfer. Start by checking the connection and comparing another port or device before changing settings or replacing hardware.
Why USB file transfers can be slow
The drive may be the limiting component
A USB flash drive can be slower than the computer port it is plugged into. A newer USB port does not make an older or slower drive write faster, and interface labels alone do not establish real-world copy performance.
The connection path may limit the transfer
A hub, dock, or adapter adds another part to the path. A slower link or a busy shared hub can constrain a transfer. Microsoft documented hub-related USB transfer problems for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7-era systems; that legacy article is useful context, not evidence that the same bug affects current Windows 11 systems. Microsoft’s USB 2.0 hub support article lists USB 2.0 speed-class maxima of 1.5 Mbps, 12 Mbps, and 480 Mbps. Those are protocol-era interface maxima, not measured flash-drive copy speeds or promises of actual performance.
The workload affects what you observe
Copying many small files involves many file operations, while copying a few large files has a different workload. A transfer that feels slower with one kind of workload does not, by itself, identify a fault. The available sources do not establish a numeric penalty or benchmark for either case.

- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
How to narrow down the cause
- Observe the transfer. Note whether it is slow from the beginning, drops after an initial burst, stalls, or affects only particular files. These patterns are clues, not proof of a specific cause.
- Connect the drive directly. If it is plugged into a hub or dock, connect it to a computer port instead. Try another suitable port, and check that any USB-C adapter or hub is appropriate for both the drive and computer.
- Compare another drive or computer. If available, try the same transfer with a different drive or try the current drive on another computer. These comparisons can help distinguish a drive limitation from an issue in the host or connection path; they are practical isolation checks, not a prescribed benchmark.
- Compare similar workloads. Notice whether the problem occurs with a large file, many small files, or both. Avoid treating one pattern as a diagnosis on its own.
When slow transfers may signal a reliability problem
Repeated disconnects, errors, or files that cannot be read are more concerning than speed alone. If the data matters, stop repeated write attempts and preserve a backup before trying a repair or reformatting. Formatting changes the filesystem and can erase data; it is not a universal speed fix.
Should you change settings or replace the drive?
Do not treat write-cache changes, registry edits, or reformatting as general-purpose remedies. Microsoft’s separate USB/SD storage guidance discusses write caching and filesystem choices in Windows 7-era terms; it does not establish universal optimization steps for modern Windows. Back up important files before any filesystem change.

If comparisons consistently point to the flash drive as the slow component, consider replacing it. Evaluate independent sustained-write tests, performance for the kinds of files you copy, and compatibility with your computer’s port; a USB generation label or peak-interface claim alone is not enough. A replacement will not solve a bottleneck caused by the port, hub, adapter, or host. Current product benchmarks and model recommendations are not established here.

Wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting the drive. Microsoft Support advises: “To avoid losing data, always safely remove hardware devices like USB flash drives or external hard drives before disconnecting them.” In Windows, select Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media in the taskbar, choose the drive, and wait for the safe-to-remove notification. This protects data; it does not speed up an active transfer. Microsoft’s Windows safe-removal instructions cover the process.
