Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

First compare the camera’s image in another app; then check Teams settings and the call’s health metrics. That order helps you find the cause before changing settings or buying a webcam.
First, find out whether the problem is Teams or the camera
Open the Windows Camera app or another video app and check the same camera under similar lighting. This comparison is a practical diagnostic: if the image is blurry there too, the camera, lens, lighting, driver, or device is a stronger suspect. If the image is clear elsewhere but poor in Teams, focus on Teams’ selected camera, effects, app state, and call conditions.
Microsoft lists poor camera resolution, a dirty or damaged lens, and network issues as possible causes of blurry or low-quality video. Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting guidance covers these possibilities.
Check the camera, scene, and Teams settings
Inspect the lens, shutter, and lighting
- Wipe the lens gently and make sure nothing is covering it.
- Check that a privacy shutter is open and any camera privacy control is disabled.
- Put light on your face or subject rather than relying on a dim, backlit scene. A camera may look soft in poor light even when it is working normally.
- Temporarily turn off background blur and other effects to see the unaltered camera image. Microsoft notes that, in personal Teams for Windows, blur can make a covered lens or privacy screen less obvious.
Teams has a brightness adjustment for video. The available controls can vary by Teams version and device; consult Microsoft’s guidance on using video in Teams for the setting and supported behavior.

Make sure Teams is using the intended camera
In Teams, open Settings and check the camera selected under device settings. If you use an external camera, disconnect and reconnect it, then select it again. Close other apps that may be using the camera and restart Teams if its preview appears stuck or incorrect. Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting steps for Teams include reconnecting an external camera, closing competing apps, restarting, and updating.
Update the app and device
Install available Teams and operating-system updates. If the camera preview is poor in multiple apps after checking the lens and lighting, check for camera driver updates through your device manufacturer or, on Windows, the device’s support tools. On a work-managed computer, ask IT before changing drivers or device policies.

Use Call health to check for network or performance trouble
During the affected meeting, select More actions > Settings > Call health. Microsoft says the displayed metrics refresh every 15 seconds. Its published typical values are under 200 ms for round-trip time and under 2% for received packet loss; these are diagnostic reference points, not guarantees of sharp video. See Microsoft’s Call health guidance.
- Packet loss or high round-trip time: These can point to network conditions affecting the call. Check whether the issue occurs on another network or at another time, and involve IT if you are on a managed corporate network.
- Lower sent resolution or frame rate during the problem: Teams may be adapting video to current bandwidth and available device resources. This can make video look less detailed or less smooth.
- Low frame rate with otherwise acceptable network indicators: The computer may be under load or lack resources for the current call. Close demanding apps and see whether performance improves.
Call health helps narrow down the cause, but a single reading does not prove that the network or computer is responsible. Compare the metrics while the problem is actually happening. Microsoft’s Teams call troubleshooting guidance also separates network and device causes.

Why Teams video quality changes during a call
Teams does not hold video quality constant. Microsoft explains that bandwidth use and quality depend on conditions and usage; when bandwidth is insufficient, Teams can adapt or limit video and may prioritize audio. Layout, resolution, frame rate, the device’s capabilities, and system resources also affect what participants see. Details are in Microsoft Learn’s network preparation guidance for Teams.
As a result, pixelation that appears only at certain times may reflect changing call conditions rather than a permanently defective camera. A camera can also look soft all the time because of low resolution, lens condition, or poor lighting, so the cross-app comparison remains useful.

When an external webcam is worth considering
Consider an external USB webcam only when the camera image is consistently poor across apps and the built-in camera’s resolution or condition appears to be the limitation. A new camera may improve the image captured by the device, but it will not fix packet loss, insufficient network bandwidth, or a computer that cannot handle the call. The same diagnosis applies before spending money on any camera upgrade.
Quick Recap

A practical order for troubleshooting
- Compare the Teams preview with Windows Camera or another video app.
- Check the lens, privacy shutter, lighting, and image with background effects off.
- Confirm Teams selected the intended camera; close competing apps and reconnect an external camera if needed.
- Update Teams and the operating system, and restart the app if the camera state seems stuck.
- During the affected call, open More actions > Settings > Call health and compare the metrics with the moment the video degrades.
- If the image is poor across apps, investigate the camera, driver, or hardware. If it is Teams-only or coincides with poor call metrics, focus on Teams or the network; contact IT or the device manufacturer for managed networks, unusual drivers, or suspected hardware faults.
