A black camera preview in Microsoft Teams can be caused by a closed shutter, another app using the camera, the wrong camera selected, or a Windows, macOS, or browser permission—not necessarily a Teams defect. Start with the quick checks below, then use the Windows Camera app or the relevant permission settings to narrow down the cause.

Start with the quick checks

  1. Check the lens and privacy controls. Open any physical camera shutter or slider. Check for a keyboard camera privacy key or a manufacturer privacy mode. A privacy screen, lock icon, gray image, or background-only view can point to a blocked camera or privacy mode.
  2. Close other camera apps. Quit other video or camera apps that may be using the device. Microsoft Support specifically advises: “Close all other apps that might be using your camera (like Skype or FaceTime).”
  3. Confirm the selected camera in Teams. Open Teams device settings and choose the camera you intend to use. If you have an external camera, unplug it and reconnect it, then select it in Teams.
  4. Restart the device and check for updates. Restarting can release a camera being held by another process. Make sure Teams and your operating system are up to date.

Microsoft’s Teams camera troubleshooting guide covers work or school accounts, while its personal Teams camera guide applies to Teams for personal use on Windows.

Find out whether the problem is Teams or the camera

Test with the Windows Camera app

On Windows, open the Camera app and check whether it shows a live preview. If it does, the camera itself is responding; focus next on Teams device selection, app permissions, or a conflict specific to Teams. If the Camera app also shows a black screen or cannot detect the camera, investigate Windows privacy settings, the camera connection, drivers, security software, or possible hardware trouble.

Microsoft recommends testing the camera in another app as part of its Windows camera troubleshooting guidance.

Know which Teams version you use

The next checks depend on whether you use the Teams desktop app or Teams in a browser. Work or school accounts and personal accounts also have different Microsoft support guidance. A desktop app relies on operating-system camera access; a browser session additionally relies on the browser’s permission for the Teams site.

Check Windows camera permissions

Windows has separate controls for camera access at the device level and for apps. Teams and browsers are desktop applications for this purpose, and Windows may not show them as individual app toggles.

  1. Windows 11: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
  2. Windows 10: Open Settings > Privacy > Camera.
  3. Make sure Camera access and Let apps access your camera are enabled.
  4. For Teams desktop or a browser, also enable Let desktop apps access your camera.
  5. Return to Teams and try the camera again. If you changed a browser permission, refresh the Teams page first.

Microsoft notes that desktop apps may not appear individually in Windows camera settings, and the desktop-app permission is not managed separately for each desktop app. If a setting is unavailable or controlled by your organization, ask your administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction. See Microsoft’s camera app-permission guidance for Windows.

Check macOS camera permission for work or school Teams

For the Teams work or school app on a Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and allow Microsoft Teams to access the camera. Close camera-using apps and restart the device if access still fails. The exact wording can vary with the macOS version; use the current camera permission controls if the labels differ. Microsoft includes this path in its Teams troubleshooting instructions.

Fix camera access in Teams on the web

  1. In your browser, allow camera access for the Teams site. If you previously denied access, change the site permission in the browser’s site settings.
  2. In Teams device settings, select the intended camera.
  3. Refresh the Teams page after changing permission, then test the camera again.
  4. If Teams is hosting an app in the browser, check whether that app also needs permission to use device features.

Microsoft provides browser-specific camera permission instructions for Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox in its Teams on the web device-feature guide. A Teams web test call is not available; Microsoft’s test-call instructions apply to the desktop app.

Use a test call for a work or school desktop account

If you use the Teams desktop app with a work or school account, make a test call from Teams settings to check the camera and other call devices. If the test call works but a meeting does not, recheck the camera selected for that meeting and whether another app is using it. Test calls are not available in Teams on the web. See Microsoft’s instructions for a Teams test call and camera settings.

If the camera fails everywhere or works only sometimes

When Windows cannot use the camera in any app

  • On Windows 11, run the Windows camera troubleshooter.
  • For an external camera, check its connection and reconnect it.
  • Check that the camera is enabled and present in Device Manager.
  • Review Windows camera permissions, drivers, and whether antivirus or other security software is blocking access.
  • If the camera is still unavailable, contact your device manufacturer about possible hardware failure.

Microsoft’s Windows camera guide includes these system-level checks.

When detection is intermittent

If the camera appears and disappears rather than staying black continuously, check for connection problems and manufacturer privacy controls. Microsoft’s personal Teams guidance describes trying Basic camera driver mode for intermittent detection; doing so may disable some manufacturer camera features. Use the instructions in its personal Teams camera troubleshooting guide rather than changing drivers blindly.

When settings are managed

If Windows or browser permissions are locked or unavailable on a work device, your organization may manage them by policy. Ask your IT administrator to check access. A camera that fails across apps after connection, permission, and driver checks may need manufacturer support.
