A buffering 24/7 sleep-music stream can be caused by your internet connection, Wi-Fi, playback device or app—or by the live stream itself. Buffering alone doesn’t reveal which one. First compare the stream with other YouTube videos, then try it on another device or connection. If you run the broadcast, check YouTube Studio’s live metrics and inspect the encoder and its outgoing internet connection.
First find out where the problem is
Use these comparisons to narrow down the cause before changing settings. They are diagnostic clues, not guarantees.
- Only this stream buffers: Try it on another device or connection. If it still buffers across different networks, the stream or its encoder may need investigation.
- Other YouTube videos buffer on the same device and connection: Focus first on the device, app, browser or local network.
- Several services buffer too: The problem may affect your broader connection or device, rather than this YouTube stream alone.
YouTube’s guidance distinguishes viewer-side issues from problems that may affect a live stream more broadly: YouTube playback troubleshooting and live-stream troubleshooting.
If you’re watching the stream
1. Compare videos, devices and connections
- Play another YouTube video on the same device. Then return to the sleep-music stream and note whether the problem is limited to that stream.
- Try the stream on another supported device, such as a phone, computer or TV, if available.
- Switch to a different internet connection if you can—for example, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data. If the stream works on one connection but not another, investigate the connection that fails.
YouTube recommends trying another connection and another supported device when playback problems persist. A comparison is more useful than assuming the stream itself is at fault.

2. Check Wi-Fi and competing network use
- Move closer to the router and try again. A weak signal or interference can make playback less reliable.
- Pause large downloads or other demanding network activity temporarily, then see whether the stream improves.
- If practical, test the device with wired Ethernet. YouTube says a wired connection may help with streaming. This test requires a compatible Ethernet port or adapter; it is not a guaranteed fix.
YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming on TV. That is a recommendation for that context, not a universal threshold or a promise against buffering.
3. Check playback quality and restart the app or device
- If the player lets you choose video quality, try a lower setting and see whether playback becomes steadier.
- Restart the YouTube app or browser, then restart the device if the issue continues.
- Check for app, browser or device updates.
- On supported mobile devices, YouTube’s app troubleshooting steps include clearing the YouTube app cache.
If unrelated YouTube videos and other services also buffer on the same device or connection, YouTube advises contacting the device manufacturer for problems that affect services beyond YouTube. Your internet provider may also be relevant if the issue follows your connection.

If you operate the sleep-music stream
Use this branch if you own or manage the broadcast. If you are only watching, the viewer-side comparisons above are the appropriate first checks.
Read viewer reports alongside live metrics
- Check YouTube Studio’s live-stream metrics and note how many viewers report trouble.
- If one viewer reports buffering, YouTube says the issue is likely to be that viewer’s computer or connection.
- If several viewers on one shared network report the problem, that network may be involved.
- If viewers on different internet connections report trouble, investigate the encoder and outgoing stream.

Inspect the encoder and outbound connection
- Check whether the encoder reports a healthy connection and whether its local preview or output has problems.
- Update the encoder if an update is available, then review its CPU load and output when audio or video quality is poor.
- If the encoder output appears healthy but viewers across separate connections still report problems, test the outgoing internet connection and continue investigating the stream path.
The title alone does not reveal the broadcast’s encoder settings, outgoing bitrate or stream health. Check the actual metrics and reports rather than assuming the stream has a particular fault.
How to interpret YouTube’s speed recommendations
YouTube publishes different figures for different playback contexts. They are recommendations, not a single universal minimum for every device, stream or network.
