I moved my podcast subscriptions from YouTube Music to AntennaPod because I wanted a podcast app rather than a video service with a podcast tab. AntennaPod is an Android-only, open-source RSS player with import/export tools, queue and episode-state controls, automatic download options, and no advertising in the app. YouTube Music is still the better choice if you depend on video episodes, YouTube recommendations, or seamless playback across YouTube screens. For audio-first listening, however, AntennaPod makes the subscription list, queue, downloads, and portable data easier to control. The switch is straightforward if you have an OPML export from Google Podcasts; shows missing from the import can be added from their RSS feeds.

Why did I leave YouTube Music for podcasts?

My problem was not that YouTube Music cannot play podcasts. It can play third-party RSS podcasts, in addition to shows hosted in YouTube’s own ecosystem. The problem was that podcast tasks felt subordinate to the rest of the service: finding a subscription, arranging a listening queue, and recording what I had finished required more attention than they should.

That reaction matches anecdotal reports in a YouTube Music community thread. Users describe navigation as bad, say they cannot reliably mark a podcast complete, report difficulty queueing episodes, and say subscription imports sometimes fail or return the wrong shows. Those are individual reports, not a measured defect rate, so they should not be treated as proof that every listener has the same experience. They do explain why a dedicated RSS application can feel like a substantial improvement.

AntennaPod is designed around podcasts first. Its project describes it as “The easy-to-use, flexible and open-source podcast manager for Android,” and its About page calls it “a podcast player, completely free and respectful of your privacy.” That focus changes what appears in the interface: feeds, episodes, playback state, downloads, and queue management are the primary objects rather than features alongside music videos and other YouTube content.

What happened to Google Podcasts, and what migration options remained?

Google announced on December 7, 2023 that Google Podcasts would be discontinued in the United States as early as April 2024. In the US, listening continued through March 2024, while the migration and export tools remained available through July 2024. The company offered two paths: move subscriptions into YouTube Music or export them as an OPML file for use in another podcast application.

That timetable matters if you are trying to repeat the move now. The Google Podcasts service itself is no longer the starting point; an old OPML file, a backup from another app, or the shows’ current RSS feeds may be what you have. OPML contains subscription addresses, not your entire listening history, so an import can recreate the feed list without reproducing every play position or completion mark.

YouTube’s April 24, 2024 release notes documented the destination service’s podcast features: third-party RSS subscriptions, background play, downloads, audio/video switching, Android Auto improvements, and customizable playlist sorting. YouTube also cited a survey in which 84% of surveyed monthly Gen Z podcast listeners in the US had discovered a podcast on YouTube. That figure is a discovery survey cited by YouTube, not a reliability test or evidence that YouTube Music is the best player for every listener.

How do YouTube Music and AntennaPod compare?

The practical difference is an ecosystem player versus a dedicated RSS manager. YouTube Music concentrates on discovery, video, and continuity across YouTube-compatible screens; AntennaPod concentrates on feed ownership, episode controls, and portability.

Concern YouTube Music AntennaPod
RSS and OPML portability Accepts third-party RSS podcasts and provided a Google Podcasts migration/export route. The service remains tied to a YouTube account and catalog. Subscribes directly to any RSS feed and supports importing and exporting podcast data, making the feed list easier to move.
Queue and episode state Offers podcast playback and playlist sorting, but some community users report trouble queueing episodes or marking them complete. These reports are anecdotal. Built around podcast episodes, with a dedicated queue and visible playback-state controls rather than a general video-and-music playlist model.
Downloads and cleanup Supports downloads; the documented release notes do not establish a universal automatic deletion policy for podcast episodes. Provides podcast-focused automatic download and deletion options, so you can define how episodes are fetched and removed as you listen.
Privacy and advertising Part of a large, account-based video and music service; the cited podcast documentation does not promise an ad-free listening experience. The project describes the app as free, privacy-respecting, open source, and free of ads.
Android Auto and device continuity Release notes document Android Auto improvements and continuity with YouTube’s broader phone, car, TV, and web ecosystem. Is an Android podcast app with its own playback workflow; the reviewed material does not establish equivalent cross-screen continuity.
Discovery and recommendations Benefits from YouTube’s video catalog, recommendations, and familiar search experience. Lets you add any feed, but its strength is managing subscriptions you choose rather than matching YouTube’s recommendation system.
Video dependence Handles audio and video versions and lets you switch between them when available. Is a podcast player, not a general YouTube video downloader. The project has stated that generic YouTube entries are outside its podcast scope.
Platform Available within YouTube’s supported services and devices. Documented as an Android app; the reviewed evidence does not establish a current iPhone release or universal regional availability.

This is a feature-based editorial comparison, not a head-to-head reliability benchmark. AntennaPod’s advantage is the inspectable, RSS-first workflow; YouTube Music’s advantage is video, recommendations, and cross-device YouTube continuity.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How do I move a Google Podcasts subscription list into AntennaPod?

Use an OPML file when you have one. If a feed did not transfer, add that show’s RSS address directly; AntennaPod explicitly supports both RSS subscriptions and import/export.

  1. Export your subscriptions. In Google Podcasts’ migration period, choose the option to export subscriptions as an OPML file. If you exported earlier, locate the saved .opml file on your phone or computer.
  2. Keep the original file. Copy the OPML file to a place you control before importing. It is your portable list of feed addresses and is useful if you later change apps again.
  3. Open AntennaPod’s import function. In the app, use its settings or menu area for importing and exporting data, then select the OPML file. Labels can vary by app version, but the operation is an OPML import rather than a YouTube account sign-in.
  4. Review the results. Check several subscriptions by name and open their latest episodes. A directory match can point to a similarly named show, and a feed may have changed or stopped publishing.
  5. Repair missing shows with RSS. Find the publisher’s official RSS feed and add it as a feed URL in AntennaPod. This bypasses directory matching and is the most direct way to subscribe to a show that did not appear in the OPML import.
  6. Set download behavior before leaving the app alone. Choose which feeds may download automatically, where files are stored, and when played episodes are removed. Start with conservative settings if your phone has limited storage or mobile data.

OPML does not guarantee that a service can recreate every old state. Treat the import as a subscription transfer, then let AntennaPod build new queue and playback history from the point of the switch.

Which daily controls improved after the switch?

Queueing episodes

A dedicated podcast queue answers a simple question: what should play next? You can place episodes in listening order without mixing them with music videos or unrelated YouTube recommendations. That separation is useful when you alternate between a news briefing, a long interview, and a back catalog episode.

Marking episodes played or unplayed

Podcast managers treat playback state as first-class data. Marking an episode played, unplayed, or partially heard lets the feed list reflect your progress instead of relying on memory. This directly addresses the “no way to mark podcast complete” complaint some YouTube Music users have raised, while avoiding the claim that every YouTube Music account has that limitation.

Automatic downloads and deletion

RSS apps can fetch new episodes according to feed rules and remove files after playback or under a storage policy. The benefit is control: you decide which shows are offline priorities and how aggressively old audio is cleaned up. YouTube Music also supports downloads, but its release notes do not establish the same podcast-specific automatic deletion behavior for every account.

When is YouTube Music still the better podcast app?

Choose YouTube Music if video is part of how you listen. Some podcasts publish a video version, a studio feed, or visual segments that are unavailable in an audio-only RSS feed. YouTube Music’s audio/video switching keeps those versions in one service.

It is also the stronger fit for discovery. YouTube’s recommendation system and enormous video catalog can surface interviews, clips, and shows you would not find by browsing RSS directories. If you already use YouTube on a phone, browser, television, and car, staying in one account can be more convenient than maintaining a separate podcast database.

Android Auto support is another practical reason to stay. YouTube’s release notes specifically mention Android Auto improvements, while the evidence reviewed here does not establish equivalent integration for AntennaPod. Drivers should test the controls and safety behavior on their own vehicle before changing a routine.

What should I check before choosing AntennaPod?

  • Phone platform: AntennaPod is documented as an Android application. Do not assume an iPhone version or cross-platform synchronization without verifying it for your devices.
  • Video requirements: AntennaPod is not a general YouTube video downloader. A show that exists only as a YouTube upload may not have an RSS feed that AntennaPod can use.
  • Feed availability: RSS is controlled by the publisher. If a creator stops publishing a feed, removes old episodes, or changes the feed URL, every RSS app will need an updated address.
  • Directory matching: An OPML import transfers feed addresses, but directory metadata can be incomplete or duplicated. Confirm the publisher name and episode list after importing.
  • Storage and data: Automatic downloads can consume storage and mobile data quickly. Start with Wi-Fi-only downloads and a small number of retained episodes, then expand once the behavior is predictable.
  • Sync expectations: AntennaPod’s project states that it supports synchronising, importing, and exporting data, but the reviewed material does not establish a particular cloud-sync service or guarantee identical state across every phone.

How do I troubleshoot a failed import or missing show?

The OPML file will not open

Confirm that the file ends in .opml and was not renamed by a file manager. Save a fresh copy locally, then retry the import from AntennaPod’s import/export area. If the file is damaged, export again from the original service or use the publisher’s RSS URLs to rebuild the list manually.

A subscription imported under the wrong name

Open the feed and compare its publisher, artwork, and recent episode titles with the show’s official page. Remove the incorrect feed and subscribe to the publisher’s RSS address directly. This avoids relying on a directory’s title search when several programs share similar names.

A show is absent from the OPML file

Search the publisher’s site for an RSS or podcast-feed link and paste that address into AntennaPod. Some publishers expose separate feeds for bonus episodes, seasons, or ad-free editions, so select the one that matches what you previously followed.

Episodes are not downloading

Check that automatic downloads are enabled for that feed, that the phone has free storage, and that Android allows the app to use background data. A feed may also have no new episode available; opening it manually distinguishes a settings problem from a quiet publishing schedule.

Is AntennaPod a good replacement for YouTube Music?

For an Android listener who wants a controllable, audio-first podcast workflow, yes. AntennaPod gives you direct RSS subscriptions, OPML portability, podcast-specific queue and playback-state management, automatic download and deletion choices, and an open-source, ad-free application whose project reports more than 180,000 active Google Play devices in 2026. The project also traces its first published code to 2011.

That recommendation has a clear boundary. YouTube Music remains more useful for video podcasts, algorithmic discovery, Android Auto improvements, and continuity across YouTube screens. The decision is therefore about workflow: choose AntennaPod when ownership and control matter more than YouTube integration, and keep YouTube Music when video and the wider YouTube ecosystem are central to how you listen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AntennaPod import my old listening history, or only subscriptions?

An OPML file primarily carries feed addresses and subscription information. It does not normally contain every play position, completion flag, or download from the previous service, so expect to rebuild that episode state after the move.

What happens if a podcast publisher changes its RSS address?

The old subscription may stop receiving episodes even though the show still exists. Subscribe to the publisher’s new official feed and remove the stale one; keeping an OPML backup makes this kind of repair easier to repeat.

Can I listen to a YouTube-only creator in AntennaPod?

Only if the creator also publishes a compatible RSS podcast feed. AntennaPod is not intended to turn arbitrary YouTube videos into podcast subscriptions.

Does AntennaPod require a paid account?

The project describes the app as completely free and free of ads. Optional hosting, synchronization, or other services outside the app may have their own terms, but no paid AntennaPod subscription is required for the core player.
